Hydrogen evolution kinetics on Ni cathodes modified by spontaneous deposition of Ag or Cu

Nickel modification by spontaneous deposition of transition metals such as Ag and Cu is shown as an economic and simple alternative for the activation of hydrogen evolution reaction（HER） on cathodes in alkaline media. The kinetics of HER is studied on Ni/Ag and Ni/Cu catalysts by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy（EIS） using a rotating disk electrode（RDE）. Freshly synthesized catalysts, as well as catalysts subjected to a short chronoamperometric ageing procedure, are analyzed and the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the HER are obtained. The nickel surface modified with transition metals with an outer shell electronic configuration [xd;（x+1）s;], such as Cu(3d;4s;)and Ag(4d;5s;), shows an improved activity for the HER compared to bare nickel. Furthermore, the Ni/Cu catalyst presents a decreased onset potential. The hydrogen evolution rate, measured as current density at –1.5 V（vs. SCE）, is similar on Ni/Cu and Ni/Ag electrodes.

Effectiveness of seed dispersal by ants in a Neotropical tree

Seed dispersal and subsequent recruitment is the template on which forest regeneration takes ***,considering the scale over which ecological processes occur is key for understanding the overall impact of various dispersal *** explore leafcutter ant(Atta colombica)dispersal effectiveness in space and time,seed movement and subsequent recruitment of a large-seeded predominately vertebrate-dispersed tree,Simarouba amara(***),was investigated on Barro Colorado Island,*** each of 218 reproductive-sized adults(>20 cm diameter at breast height),presence or absence of a leafcutter ant colony was noted,with extensive checks for Atta activity taking place at or in close proximity to seed and seedling transects,which extended 4 cardinal directions for 30 m from each reproductive female tree(n=74).Only at 2 *** trees were nests observed,and in these areas a dense *** seedling carpet was *** nearby nest and dump sites might increase local *** recruitment in the short term,mortality at these sites is complete or nearly ***,the seed dispersal effectiveness by leafcutter ants appears to be ephemeral and likely contributes inconsequentially to the long-term recruitment and distribution patterns of the *** finding highlights the importance of evaluating disperser effectiveness at ecologically relevant spatiotemporal scales.

NGR-tagged nano-gold： A new CD13-selective carrier for cytokine delivery to tumors

Colloidal gold （Au）, a well-tolerated several applications in nanomedicine. nanomaterial, is currently exploited for We show that gold nanoparticles tagged with a novel tumor-homing peptide containing Asn-Gly-Arg （NGR）, a ligand of CD13 expressed by the tumor neovasculature, can be exploited as carriers for cytokine delivery to tumors. Biochemical and functional studies showed that the NGR molecular scaffoldflinker used for gold functionalization is critical for CD13 recognition. Using fibrosarcorna-bearing mice, NGR-tagged nanodrugs could deliver extremely low, yet pharmacologically active doses of tumor necrosis factor （TNF）, an anticancer cytokine, to tumors with no evidence of toxicity. Mechanistic studies confirmed that CD13 targeting was a primary mechanism of drug delivery and excluded a major role of integrin targeting consequent to NGR deamidation, a degradation reaction that generates the isoAsp-Gly-Arg （isoDGR） integrin ligand. NGR-tagged gold nanoparticles can be used, in principle, as a novel platform for single- or multi-cytokine delivery to tumor endothelial cells for cancer therapy.

High rate of complicated idiopathic gallstone disease in pediatric patients of a North American tertiary care center

AIM: To assess spectrum and etiology of gallstones and biliary sludge in the pediatric population of a North American tertiary care centre. METHODS: Retrospective review of abdominal ultraso- unds recorded at Saint Justine Hospital over a period of 24 mo (8/2003 to 8/2005) in patients 2 years of age idiopathic gallstone disease was found. These 48 patients represent 2.1% of the population who required ultrasound for abdominal pain. Complicated gallstone disease occurred in 28/48 with idiopathic disease, mainly adolescent girls. Patients with hemolytic disorders, cystic fibrosis, oncologic diseases or kidney transplantation and gallstones were asymptomatic and stones were detected during routine abdominal ultrasound. Twenty two patients < 2 years of age not consulting for abdominal pain had gallstone disease of diverse etiology. Biliary sludge was seen in 84 patients, 78.5% on total parenteral nutrition. In 4 patients, sludge progressed to gallstones. CONCLUSION: Idiopathic gallstone disease and its rate of complication are more frequent in our cohort than expected from previous studies. Adolescent girls with abdominal pain and idiopathic gallstones require special attention for complicated disease course.

Virulence of Helicobacter pylori,Helicobacter suis and other bacteria appears to be partly mediated through a release of gamma-glutamyltransferase(GGT),an enzyme activity capable of promoting biochemical reactions ultimately resulting in damage to gastric epithelium and suppression of immune *** published studies show that secretion of bacterial GGT occurs in the form of exosome-like *** similar GGT-rich exosomes have been described to originate from human cancer cells,and the hypothesis is thus forwarded that in the resistant and invasive phenotype of malignant cells such vesicular/exosomal GGT may play roles akin to those described for Helicobacter infection,thus providing a significant contribution to the establishment of cancer metastases.

Now advertized in at least one locale as the ＇sexy ratio＇ with the caption, ＇Your hands give away your hotness＇（http：//***/ #!5794008; accessed 3 May 2011）, an online summary of a recent study linking facial attractiveness to the ratio of the index and ring fingers1 indicates that digit ratio （2D：4D） research has reached mainstream culture. Digit ratio, most commonly the ratio of the index to ring fingers in humans, is sexually dimorphic （males have lower values than females） with greater differences on their right hand.
