Flexible, diamond-based microelectrodes fabricated using the diamond growth side for neural sensing

Diamond possesses many favorable properties for biochemical sensors,including biocompatibility,chemical inertness,resistance to biofouling,an extremely wide potential window,and low double-layer *** hardness of diamond,however,has hindered its applications in neural implants due to the mechanical property mismatch between diamond and soft nervous ***,we present a flexible,diamond-based microelectrode probe consisting of multichannel boron-doped polycrystalline diamond(BDD)microelectrodes on a soft Parylene C *** developed and optimized a wafer-scale fabrication approach that allows the use of the growth side of the BDD thin film as the sensing *** to the nucleation surface,the BDD growth side exhibited a rougher morphology,a higher sp^(3) content,a wider water potential window,and a lower background *** dopamine(DA)sensing capability of the BDD growth surface electrodes was validated in a 1.0 mM DA solution,which shows better sensitivity and stability than the BDD nucleation surface *** results of these comparative studies suggest that using the BDD growth surface for making implantable microelectrodes has significant advantages in terms of the sensitivity,selectivity,and stability of a neural ***,we validated the functionality of the BDD growth side electrodes for neural recordings both in vitro and in *** biocompatibility of the microcrystalline diamond film was also assessed in vitro using rat cortical neuron cultures.

Methane Dry Reforming over Alumina Supported Co Catalysts

A series of Co/γ-Al_2O_3 catalysts were prepared with the impregnation method and characterized by means of the BET specific surface area, X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and Laser Raman spectroscopy. The Co/γ-Al_2O_3 catalysts were activated by using h_2, 20%Ch_4/h_2 or Ch_4, respectively. There was no obvious difference between the activities of the Co/γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst activated by using the different activation methods for methane dry reforming. The catalytic properties of the Co/γ-Al_2O_3 catalysts with different Co loadings were also investigated. The optimized Co loading for the Co/γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst pretreated with 20% Ch_4/h_2 is around 12%(mass fraction).

Robust Disturbance Rejection Based Control with Extended-state Resonant Observer for Sway Reduction in Uncertain Tower-cranes

In this paper, the problem of load transportation and robust mitigation of payload oscillations in uncertain tower-cranes is addressed. This problem is tackled through a control scheme based on the philosophy of active-disturbance-rejection. here, a general disturbance model built with two dominant components: polynomial and harmonic, is stated. Then, a disturbance observer is formulated through state-vector augmentation of the tower-crane model. Thus, better performance of estimations for system states and disturbances is achieved. The control law is then formulated to actively reject the disturbances but also to accommodate the closed-loop system dynamics even under system uncertainty. The proposed control schema is validated via experimentation using a small-scale tower-crane,and compared with other relevant active disturbance rejection control(ADRC)-based techniques. The experimental results show that the proposed control scheme is robust under parametric uncertainty of the system, and provides improved attenuation of payload oscillations even under system uncertainty.

Removing contaminants from tannery wastewater by chemical precipitation using CaO and Ca(Oh)2

The removal of Cr,sulfates and Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD)from industrial tannery wastewater by chemical precipitation was carried out using Calcium oxide(CaO)and Calcium hydroxide(Ca(Oh)2).Different doses of alkalis,ranging from deficiency to excess hydroxyl species over the stoichiometric necessary,were used to remove theoretically the 100%of Cr[0.3-3.2 g alkali·(g Cr^3+)^-1].The precipitation was carried out at room temperature,10 min of vigorous stirring,200 r·min^-1 and a settling time of 24 h,followed by separation and characterization of liquid *** result of addition of alkalis,ph underwent increase as did the alkali *** removal of Cr,and sulfates also increased as alkali concentration did,although for first species the changes at higher alkali contents were less *** removal on the other hand,did not follow a unique trend,instead exhibited a *** on our results,selection of a specific dose of alkali was carried out taking as reference the efficiency on total chromium removal,keeping the ph in the range 7 to 9 to ensure Cr precipitation as chromium *** those conditions,jar test was used to produce enough liquid product in order to determine the removal percent of several other *** removal percent of the species was as follows:Cr,SO4^2-,ZnSO4,FeSO4,CN^-1,NiSO4,Fe2[Fe(CN)6]at 99.8%,66.9%,99.6%,21.4%,70.9%,52.8%and 76.4%with CaO,and 99.8%,61.6%,99.9%,7.1%,84.0%,54.4%and 90.5%with Ca(Oh)2,respectively.

Comparison of lipid extraction methods for the microalgae Acutodesmus obliquus

Microalgae are widely used in the pharmaceutical and energy industries,therefore the conditions for their cultivation and extraction methods play an important role in the profiling and acquisition of *** efficiency of lipid extraction from microalgae has attracted great interest from industry because of the wide variety of lipids and amounts that can be *** obliquus(Scenedesmus obliquus UTEX 393)was used in this *** was cultivated in Bold 3N medium modified with 75%nitrogen at 25℃,ph 6.8,125 r/min and a photoperiod of 18/6 h and illuminated with white light provided by a Light-Emitting Diode Surface Mount Device extensions(LED SMD)with an intensity of 1200μE/(m^(2)·s).The cells were stained with the Red Nile(RN)technique to indicate lipid *** extraction methods were compared,classical,microwave(MW),Soxhlet,and ultrasound(US),using the same solvent proportions(hexane:chloroform:methanol=1:2:3).All samples were analyzed with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR)and Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry(GC-MS).The results showed:1)lipid production detected by RN was consistent with microalgal growth;2)the MW technique was the best extraction method,according to the statistical analysis through Randomized Complete Block(RCB)design and performance of 4.6%;and 3)the presence of saturated and unsaturated acids was indicated by FTIR ***-MS was able to identify palmitic and linoleic acids as the likely major constituents of the sample.

Fully reversible spectral compression of arbitrary pulsed data signals

Data signals consisting of arbitrarily modulated sequences of pulses are extensively used for processing and communication *** spectral extent of such signals is determined by the bandwidth of the individual pulses in the sequence,which imposes a fundamental limit to the maximum amount of information that can be transmitted or processed per time *** this work,we propose and experimentally demonstrate that the frequency spectrum occupied by a data-modulated pulse sequence can be significantly compressed to well below the individual pulse bandwidth while still maintaining the temporal duration of the pulses in the sequence and without losing any of the information carried by the *** proposed method involves fully reversible linear transformations of the data signal along the time and frequency *** demonstrate successful pulse-shapepreserving spectral compression and subsequent full waveform and information recovery of a^10 Gb/s optical pulse sequence,modulated by an arbitrary data pattern,liberating over 60%of its *** findings should prove useful for applications in signal processing,communications,and others.

“The red cage”:implementation of ph-responsiveness within a macrobicyclic pyridinium-based molecular host

We present herein the implementation of ph-responsiveness into a new polycationic macrobicyclic structure,namely what we have termed the“red cage”.The hydrolytically-stable cryptand-like compound has been prepared in a relatively high yield in aqueous media by a kinetically-controlled hydrazone-exchange reaction,promoted by the unusual high stability of the new hydrazone CvN bonds *** organic media the macrobicycle was found not able to complex model aromatic *** buffered aqueous solutions,as a comparison,the“red cage”was found able to recognize them,but the binding was observed to be more efficient in acidic form of the cyclophane compared with its conjugate base.

To perform a meta-analysis of published reportsin an attempt to determine the mean and range ofnormal ambulatory blood pressure(BP),23 studies in-cluding a total of 3 476 normal subjects *** studies were compatible with a mean24-h BP in the range of 115-120/70-75mmhg,amean day time BP of 120-125/75-80mmhg,and amean night time BP of 105 to 110/60 to 65 *** weighting for the number of subjects included inthe individual studies,the 24-h BP averaged 118/72mmhg,the day time BP 123/76 mmhg,and thenight time BP 106/64 *** night/day pres-sure ratio averaged 0.87 for systolic and 0.83 fordiastolic BP,with ranges across the individual studiesfrom 0.79 to 0.92 and from 0.75 to 0.90,*** the mean ± 2 standard deviation interval in the va-rious studies was considered normal,the range ofnormality was on average 97 to 139/57 to 87 mmhgfor the 24-h BP,101 to 146/61 to 91 mmhg for theday time BP,and 86 to 127/48 to 79 mmhg for thenight time *** the results of prospective studieson the relation between the ambulatory BP and the in-cidence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality be-come available,the aforementioned intervals,whichsummarize the experience of 23 investigators,couldserve as a temporary reference for clinical practice.

Soil Organic Matter and Grain Yield of Rainfed Maize in Luvisols of Campeche, México

The organic matter is an important soil component, due its favorable effects on soil physical and chemical properties and, by consequence, on crop yields. So, the objective of this work was quantify the changes through the time of soil organic matter in rainfed maize (Zea mays L.) system, in a period of 30 years of continuous crop and in relation to system of natural vegetation system, and also the effects of these changes on the crop yield, in Luvisols soils of State of Campeche, México. In production cycle of 2004, 53 farmer plots in rainfed maize system of different land use time and five sites of forest natural vegetation system were sampled for soil, to quantify physical and chemical properties of soil, and it was taken data about climate, system management and crop yield. The data were analiced by regression analysis, considered the organic matter as function of land use time and factors of soil and management of system, and the crop yield as function of soil organic matter and factors of soil, climate and management of system. The soil organic matter diminished from 5.68% in forest natural vegetation system to 3.59% after 16 - 30 years of cultivation, and the soil annual incorporation of vegetative mulch (weeds and stubble of maize) increased the organic matter from 0.14% after 1 - 5 years to 0.46% after 16 - 30 years of cultivation. Without fertilization, the diminution of soil organic matter caused 907 kg⋅ha−1 less of maize yield, and the fertilization with 200 kg⋅ha−1 of diamonic phosphate (36 kg⋅N⋅ha−1 and 92 kg P2O5 ha−1) increased the maize yield 1224 kg⋅ha−1 after 1 - 5 years and 1421 kg⋅ha−1 after 16 - 30 years of cultivation, but not compensed less maize yield of 711 kg⋅ha−1 due the diminution of soil organic matter.
