Identification of BRAF V600E mutation in odontogenic tumors by high-performance MALDI-TOF analysis

Odontogenic tumors are rare lesions with unknown *** of them are benign,but local aggressiveness,infiltrative potential,and high recurrence rate characterize some *** MAP-kinase pathway activation can represent a primary critical event in odontogenic ***,the BRAF V600E mutation has been involved in 80%–90%of ameloblastic lesions,offering a biological rationale for developing new targeted *** study aims to evaluate the BRAF V600E mutation in odontogenic lesions,comparing three different detection methods and focusing on the Sequenom MassARRAY System.81 surgical samples of odontogenic lesions were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis,Sanger Sequencing,and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight mass spectrometry(Sequenom).The BRAF V600E mutation was revealed only in ameloblastoma ***,the presence of BRAF V600E was significantly associated with the mandibular site(ρ=0.627;P value<0.001)and the unicystic histotype(ρ=0.299,P value<0.001).However,any significant difference of 10-years disease-free survival time was not ***,Sequenom showed to be a 100%sensitive and 98.1%specific,suggesting its high-performance diagnostic *** results suggest the MAP-kinase pathway could contribute to ameloblastic ***,they could indicate the anatomical specificity of the driving mutations of mandibular ameloblastomas,providing a biological rational for developing new targeted ***,the high diagnostic accuracy of Sequenom was confirmed.

We describe an uncommon case of a patient with a metastatic adenocarcinoma of ovarian origin presented as a gastric subepithelial tumor(SET) and that was diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle biopsy(EUS-FNB). Malignant gastric lesions are rarely metastatic and the primary tumor is mainly breast, lung, esophageal cancer or cutaneous melanoma. Gastric metastasis from ovarian cancer is unusual, presenting synchronously with the primary tumor but also several years later than the initial diagnosis. From an endoscopic point of view, gastric metastasis does not present specific features. They may mimic both a primary gastric tumor or, less frequently, an *** case demonstrates the importance of EUS-FNB in distinguishing SETs and how this may alter treatment and prognosis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of the colorectal region which may be complicated by extraintestinal manifestations, as cutaneous involvement. Immune dysregulation resulting in a lymphocyte mediated destructive process has been suggested as a possible pathogenetic link between gut and skin-related manifestations. The authors describe an atypical clinical aspect of lichen ruber planus in a patient affected by vitiligo, alopecia areata and ulcerative colitis.

Algorithms to Compute the Largest Invariant Set Contained in an Algebraic Set for Continuous-Time and Discrete-Time Nonlinear Systems

In this paper, some computational tools are proposed to determine the largest invariant set, with respect to either a continuous-time or a discrete-time system, that is contained in an algebraic set. In particular, it is shown that if the vector field governing the dynamics of the system is polynomial and the considered analytic set is a variety, then algorithms from algebraic geometry can be used to solve the considered problem. Examples of applications of the method(spanning from the characterization of the stability to the computation of the zero dynamics) are given all throughout the paper.

On “Over-Sized” High-Gain Practical Observers for Nonlinear Systems

In this paper,it is shown that the performances of a class of high-gain practical observers can be improved by estimating the time derivatives of the output up to an order that is greater than the dimension of the system, which is assumed to be in observability form and, possibly, time-varying. Such an improvement is achieved without increasing the gain of the observers, thus allowing their use in a wide variety of control and identification applications.

Tidal drag and westward drift of the lithosphere

Tidal forces are generally neglected in the discussion about the mechanisms driving plate tectonics despite a worldwide geodynamic asymmetry also observed at subduction and rift *** tidal drag could theoretically explain the westerly shift of the lithosphere relative to the underlying ***,viscosity in the asthenosphere is apparently too high to allow mechanical decoupling produced by tidal ***,we propose a model for global scale geodynamics accompanied by numerical simulations of the tidal interaction of the Earth with the Moon and the *** provide for the first time a theoretical proof that the tidal drag can produce a westerly motion of the lithosphere,also compatible with the slowing of the Earth’s rotational *** results suggest a westerly rotation of the lithosphere with a lower bound ofω≈(0.1-0.2)°/Myr in the presence of a basal effective shear viscosityη≈10^(16)Pa-s,but it may rise toω>1°/Myr with a viscosity ofη≈≤3×10^(14)Pa-s within the Low-Velocity Zone(LVZ)atop the *** faster velocity would be more compatible with the mainstream of plate motion and the global asymmetry at plate *** on these computations,we suggest that the super-adiabatic asthenosphere,being vigorously convecting,may further reduce the viscous coupling within the LVZ Therefore,the combination of solid Earth tides,ultra-low viscosity LVZ and asthenospheric polarized small-scale convection may mechanically satisfy the large-scale decoupling of the lithosphere relative to the underlying *** plate motions are explained because of lateral viscosity heterogeneities at the base of the lithosphere,which determine variable lithosphere-asthenosphere decoupling and plate interactions,hence plate tectonics.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2;formerly designated as 2019-nCoV),a novel betacoronavirus firstly identified during a burst of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City,Hubei Province,China.1 Unfortunately,within a few weeks,the SARS-COV2 virus started to spread globally,producing a pandemic of an extremely spreadable and potentially fatal disease,becoming a cause of great concern for global public health.1 Despite the current estimates of COVID-19 case fatality rate suggest that this coronavirus is less deadly than other pathogens driving other large-scale outbreaks,such as SARS,Middle East respiratory syndrome,or Ebola,the main concern is that this infection is able to spread more easily than other diseases,including seasonal influenza.

Fetal arrhythmias reach up around 10%of the total third-level perinatal cardiology *** bradycardia is defined as a baseline fetal heart rate(FHR)of less than 110 bpm sustained for at least 10 *** overall incidence of malignant fetal bradyarrhythmias,such as complete atrioventricular block(AVB)and channellopathies,is relatively rare,1:5000 pregnancies,but represents a serious emergency for the gynecologist,neonatologists,and pediatric *** complete AVB is strongly associated with maternal connective tissue disease,but it can be also associated with congenital heart disease and usually with a poorer prognosis with high risk of fetal hydrops and ***,the treatment of severe fetal bradyarrhythmias is principally pharmacological and aims to increase the FHR,besides an early resolution of underlying causes,when possible,and a promptly management of fetal heart *** electrostimulation nowadays is an experimental pioneering method,reserved for limited selected cases.

In the recent decades,microsurgical reconstruction has evolved from simple survival of the affected extremity to the improvement of functional and aesthetic *** review retraces the main contributions to the advances of microsurgery for reconstruction of upper and lower extremities and limb *** the upper extremity,it is important to restore fine motility,together with allowing prompt *** the lower limb,care must be taken in the reconstruction of weight-bearing areas and the aim must be proper ambulation and shoe *** perforator flaps can be considered for medium size *** provide thin coverage and can be performed in short operating *** use,though,is often limited by tissue *** flaps allow to overcome this problem and,thanks to the recent development in the study of perforator vessels,the microsurgeon can choose the flap with the most appropriate *** flaps can accomplish simultaneous reconstruction of different tissue components and large bone defects often require vascularized bone *** dealing with limb preservation it is very important to consider residual *** muscle transfer and targeted muscle re-innervation can be performed in these cases.A useful reconstructive tool in severely damaged limbs with limited blood supply is the use of cross-leg free *** conclusion,extremity reconstruction and limb preservation are reaching new heights thanks,not only to the work of plastic surgeons,but also to the new developments in other fields of study such as oncology,traumatology,radiology and medical engineering.
