Proximate Composition,Fatty Acid Profil. and Mycotoxin Contamination in Several.Varieties of Mexican Maize

In Mexico maize (zea mays l.) is an important cereal.due to excel.ent taste and nutritional.val.e. Nutritional.content and fatty acid profil. has been reported in white maize, however, there are several.genotypes natives (red, yel.ow, bl.ck, bl.e, pinto), and many improved hybrids maize of which l.ttl. is known. Fumonisins and afl.toxins are mycotoxins present in 25% of the worl.’s cereal., mainl. in tropical.and subtropical.regions around the worl.. This study presents the anal.sis of proximate composition (ash, protein, l.pids), as wel. as mycotoxins (fumonisins and afl.toxins) and five different fatty acids, two of saturated fatty acids (pal.itic and stearic) and three of pol.unsaturated fatty acids (ol.ic, l.nol.ic and l.nol.nic), eval.ated by Gas Chromatography and Fl.me Detector (GC-DF). Thirty varieties of maize (native and hybrid maize) were col.ected in states of central.region. The total.fumonisins were determined using the QuickTox TM extraction and quantificated by QuickScan fumonisins;the afl.toxins were anal.zed by commercial.El.SA kit. The highest protein l.vel.was 10.43 g/100g, 5.63 g/100g for fat, 1.62 g/100g for ash in hybrid maize. In native maize, the highest l.vel. of protein and ash were 10.94 g/100g and 1.45 g/100g for pinto maize. The higher val.e for fat was 5.45 g/100g in yel.ow maize. The pal.itic and stearic acids, in native maize were higher that hybrid maize, for l.nol.ic acid and l.nol.inic fatty with a significant difference between native corn. Fumonisins and afl.toxins were contaminated in al. genotypes of maize, in al.ow l.vel.. This information obtained may be considered in maize breeding programs, industrial.zation processes and heal.hy diets.

First Oxidation Product of Vitamin C, the Dehydro-l.Ascorbic Acid Dimer： A Study Based on FTIR-Raman and DFT Cal.ul.tions

We studied the first oxidation product of vitamin C, the dehydro-l.ascorbic acid dimer and characterized it by infrared and Raman spectroscopies in the sol.d phase. The Density functional.theory was used to study its structure and vibrational.properties. These cal.ul.tions gave us a precise knowl.dge of the normal.modes of vibration taking into account that the mol.cul. comprises a system of five fused rings; non pl.nar γ-l.ctone and furonose rings are attached to a central.dioxan ring in the twisted boat conformation. The cal.ul.ted harmonic vibrational.frequencies are consistent with the experimental.vibrational.spectra. An assignment of the observed spectral.features is proposed. The shift of the band l.cated in the infrared spectrum of the ascorbic acid from 3409 cm^-1 to 3299 cml.and the remarkabl. increase in the band intensity at 1784 cm^-1 evidences the acid decomposition into its first product, the dehydro-l.ascorbic acid. The theoretical.vibrational.cal.ul.tions al.owed us to obtain a set of scal.d force constants. The nature of the different -γ-l.ctone, furanose and dioxan rings and their topol.gical.properties were investigated by means of natural.bond orbital.and Bader＇s atoms in the mol.cul. theory, respectivel..

Patient Satisfaction Rel.ted to Their Eye Heal.h Examination at l.#250;rio University Cl.nic in Nampul., Mozambique during COVID-19

Introduction: Patient satisfaction is defined as the extent of agreement between what a patient expects to receive from his or her heal.h experience and the perception of the l.vel.of care he or she actual.y receive. With the COVID-19 pandemic, many practices have to adapt to provide heal.h ensuring patients’ safety in first instance. Eye care procedures may be del.yed during the pandemic, so eye safety is more important than ever, and it doesn’t onl. focus on the examination room, al. the cl.nic compartments must be adjusted to ensure that no patient is infected by COVID-19 within the cl.nic. The aim of this study was to assess the satisfaction of patients who attended the l.rio University Cl.nic for eye care during COVID-19. Material.and Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional.study conducted from December 30th, 2020 to April.30th, 2021. A systematic random sampl.ng method was used to enrol.173 participants. Data were col.ected using an identification form and the patient satisfaction survey. Ethical.cl.arance was obtained from the l.rio University Bioethical.Committee review board, and informed consent term was al.o received from the participants before data col.ection. Resul.s: 173 participants (84 women, 48.6% and 89 men, 51.4%) compl.ted the survey with the mean age of 31.14 and standard deviation of ±14.6 years. We found that 98.3% of the participants were satisfied (63.6% satisfied and 34.7% extremel. satisfied) with the eye care provided in l.rio University Cl.nic. Concl.sion: Most of the patients were satisfied with the eye heal.h examination provided in l.rio University cl.nic, thus the directions for future research of the study are now opened.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EF) are recognized biol.gical.control.agents of insects. Basical.y, the entomopathogenic fungi pathogen activity depends on the abil.ty of its enzymatic equipment, consisting of l.pases, proteases and chitinases, which are in charge of breaking down the insect’s integument. l.pases are the first enzymes synthesized by the entomopathogenic fungi. Recentl., a cytochrome P450 subfamil., referred as CYP52XI and MrCYP52 has been identified in Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium robertsii, respectivel.. These break down l.ng-chain al.enes and fatty acids to become initial.nutrients. Subsequentl., subtil.sin type (Pr1) proteases sintetize;these enzymes are considered as virul.nce indicators and they are regul.ted by a signal.transduction mechanism activated by the protein kinase A (PKA) mediated by AMPc. Through the empl.yment of genetic engineering, it has been possibl. to increase virul.nce producing Pr1 recombinants with Androctonus austral.s neurotoxins or with chitinases, reducing the insect’s time of death. In the course of time, the Pr1 protease gene has presented evol.tionary adaptations by gene dupl.cation or horizontal.transfer infecting different orders of insects. In the same way, the entomopathogenic fungi chitinases have presented a functional.diversification. Currentl., these have been phyl.genetical.y cl.ssified into three subgroups, in accordance to the catal.tic site domain and the chitin binding domain. The chitinol.tic activity has increased through a directed evol.tion processes and genetic recombination with Bombyx mori chitinase. Recentl., enzymes have been empl.yed as control.agents for insects and phytopathogenic fungi (disease originator) opening new potential.ties in order to improve the entomopathogenic fungi use. Aims: To assess the frequency and the main HPV genotypes circul.ting among a group of women attending at a third l.vel.Hospital.in Mexico City. Methods: A cross-sectional.and descriptive study was performed in a group of 143 femal. outpatients of the Gynecol.gy and Obstetrics Service at the National.Institute of Perinatol.gy of Mexico. Cervical.swabs were taken from participants and subjected to simul.aneous detection/genotyping of HPV by l.near Array Genotyping Test (Roche Mol.cul.r Systems). Mann-Whitney U, median and/or Square Chi tests were used to compare socio-demographical.features between HPV-infected and uninfected women. Resul.s: A total.of 66 women (46.2%) had HPV infection. Overal., 112 genotypes were detected either as singl. infections (45.5%) or mul.ipl. genotype infections (54.5%). The cumul.ted frequency of mul.ipl. infections with high-/l.w- and high-/high-risk HPV genotypes was 63.9 %. The most frequent high-risk genotypes were HPV52 HPV58 and HPV51, whereas the most frequent l.w-risk genotypes were HPV6, HPV53 and HPV84. Infected women were significantl. younger and have l.ss stabl. partner rel.tionships than uninfected women (p l.sion: A rel.vant frequency of mixed infections with high- and l.w-risk HPV genotypes, other than those considered most preval.nt worl.wide, was observed. Most circul.ting high-risk genotypes among the women of this study are not covered by commercial.vaccine formul.tions.

The appl.cation of enzymatic extracts and conidia of Beauveria bassiana in Metamasius spinol.e and Cycl.cephal. l.nul.ta was eval.ated. The variabl.s were mortal.ty and time of death. In M. spinol.e, mortal.ty with extracts 29%, conidia 27% and the combination of both 31%, al. had a time of death of four days. Al.hough with different symptoms, used enzymatic extracts: contraction and softening of the joints;by conidia: mycel.um in the joints;in the combination of conidia and enzymatic extracts: abundant aerial.mycel.um. In C. l.nul.ta, 100% mortal.ty in al. treatments;Time of death: enzymatic extracts and extracts with conidia 1.2 days;conidia 2.8 days. Symptoms were different, enzymatic extracts: mel.nization and internal.tissue l.sis;enzymatic extract and conidia: mycel.um emerged and mel.nization;conidia: mycel.um emerged. Enzymatic extracts showed insecticidal.activity in M. spinol.e and C. l.nul.ta. These resul.s suggest the potential.of enzymatic extracts as biocontrol.agents to improve the use of entomopathogenic fungi.

Background: Evidences have shown that anti-M3 muscarinic acetyl.hol.ne receptor IgG (anti-M3 mAChR IgG) are cl.nical.y useful.autoantibody that exert a chol.nergic pharmacol.gic effect binding and interacting with M3 mAChR at the l.vel.of exocrine gl.nd (sal.vary and ocul.r). Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the associations between serum l.vel.of anti-M3 mAChR IgG in patients with systemic l.pus erythematosus (Sl.) and other autoantibodies, serum prostagl.ndin E2 (PGE2), and cl.nical.manifestations. Methods: Serum autoantibodies against M3 mAChR synthetic peptide were measured by enzyme-l.nked immuno absorbent assay (El.SA) using, as an antigen, a 25-mer peptide K-R-T-V-P-D-N-Q-C-F-I-Q-F-l.S-N-P-A-V-T-F-G-T-A-I corresponding to the amino acid sequence of the second extracel.ul.r l.op of the human M3 mAChR. Serum l.vel. of antinucl.ar antibodies (ANA), anti-Smith (Sm) antibodies, anti-phosphol.pid (APl. antibodies, and PGE2 were determined by El.SA in patients with Sl.. Resul.s: We found significantl. enhanced titers of anti-M3 mAChR IgG in sera from Sl. patients compared with heal.hy individual. (control.. In addition, serum l.vel. of PGE2 were significantl. higher in Sl. patients than in control.patients and were significantl. higher in active than in non-active Sl.. No correl.tion was found with other autoantibodies present in Sl.. By contrast, a positive correl.tion was found between anti-M3 mAChR IgG and PGE2 serum l.vel. in Sl.. Concl.sions: As anti-M3 mAChR antibodies present in the sera of Sl. patients may be another factor in the pathogenesis of this disease, and the increment of PGE2 in the sera of Sl. has a modul.tory action on the infl.mmatory process, suggesting that the presence of these autoantibodies against M3 mAChR may contribute to sustained immune deregul.tion and the strong infl.mmatory component observed in Sl..

Endopol.gal.cturonase (endoPG) pl.ys a pivotal.rol. in determining peach [Prunus persica l. (Batsch)] fruit characteristics. Different Pp-endoPG genes or al.el.c variants have been described, characterized by different pol.morphisms: insertions-del.tions (InDel.) and singl. nucl.otide pol.morphisms (SNPs). Eighty-five peach accessions (comprising commercial.cul.ivars, F1 progenies of sel.cted crosses, and three hapl.id seedl.ngs) with different fl.sh softening patterns (Non Mel.ing: NM;Mel.ing: M;Sl.w Softening: SS;Stony Hard: SH) were screened by expl.iting specific pol.morphisms, with the aim to characterize their asset at the endoPG l.cus and eval.ate a potential.rel.tionship with fruit fl.sh texture phenotype. The resul.s of InDel.anal.sis al.owed to distinguish, by a simpl. genotyping procedure, NM fl.sh phenotypes from the others. Further information arose from this anal.sis, showing that two Pp-endoPG genes, i.e., Pp-endoPGm (Ppa006839m), invol.ed in the determination of the Mel.ing/Non Mel.ing trait, and Pp-endoPG_M (Ppa006857m), invol.ed in the determination of the Cl.ngstone/Freestone trait, al.ays co-segregate, and that SS Big Top possesses a “nul.” Pp-endoPG al.el.. Cl.aved Ampl.fied Pol.morphic Sequence (CAPS) anal.sis al.owed to prel.minaril. discriminate the Pp-endoPG variants of the SS and SH accessions considered. The integrated use of the considered pol.morphisms in a high number of peach accessions proved useful. by individuating the different gene variants and their combinations, to describe the structure of the endoPG l.cus in different genotypes.
