Vascular endothelium releases vasocontracting and/or vasorelaxing substances. Here, we report the diversity of endothelium-derived vasocontracting factors（EDCFs）, arachidonic acid metabolites, and discuss the pathophysiological significance. In the canine basilar artery and the rabbit intrapulmonary artery, acetylcholine-induced contractions（ACh-induced EDC） are due to endothelial thromboxane A2（TXA2）（TXA2-type）. The ACh-induced EDC in the rabbit coronary artery is due to endothelial leukotrienes（LTs）（LTs-type）. In addition, in the rat coronary artery, nicotine and noradrenaline（NAd）-induced EDCs are due to endothelial COX-metabolites（COX metabolite-type）. These arachidonic acid metabolites derived from endothelium（activation by vasoactive substances including ACh, NAd and nicotine） cause a contraction of vascular smooth muscle cells and may disturb the local circulation. The maintenance of high cognitive performance in old age has increasingly become a public health interest due to associations between cognition,well-being,longevity,and *** objective of the research is to investigate cognitive,physical,and psychological trajectories of neurotypical older adults(NOAs)and high performing older adults(HPOAs).An exploratory study to investigate 21 NOAs and six HPOAs(mean age 71,SD=±3.59),followed up for one *** older adults were submitted to physical fitness,quality of life,anxiety,depression,RAVLT,ACE-R,and Stroop tests,being assessed at three moments:baseline,six months after the cognitive(MEMO)or stimulation(Stimullus)interventions,and six months after the multimodal interventions,which could be physical or psychopedagogical interventions(health education lectures).Nonparametric statistical tests(Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon)were performed with p≤*** results demonstrated that the cognitive measures were good predictors of cognitive performance and we observed positive correlations between cognitive and mood *** older adults with high performance had a lower prevalence of depressive *** were gains in global cognitive performance,mood,and in physical fitness variables associated with multimodal interventions,evident in the neurotypical group.

This paper presents the results of a research project on the intercultural climate in schools and the academic success of immigrant students in *** intercultural climate in eight secondary public schools is documented from the standpoint of various school and community stakeholders,students,and *** specifically,the paper focuses on the commitment to promoting cultural equity,which is identified through interviews with the targeted stakeholders on exclusionary practices and processes and the practices implemented to counter *** results identify five areas of vulnerability among certain minoritized groups of students:the transition from welcoming to regular classes for those students learning French,evaluation and support for those experiencing learning or behavioral difficulties,the referral of these students to adult education programs or work-oriented training programs,their participation in extracurricular activities,and their access to special school ***,some schools do report the introduction of many equity practices in response to the exclusionary ***,these initiatives are mostly occasional and voluntary and pertain to interactions between *** findings call for a discussion on the importance of systemic and concerted initiatives towards achieving equity.

Background:Physical deconditioning affects patients suffering from end-stage liver disease(ESLD).Liver transplantation(LT)is the only curative option for *** evidence suggests that pre-habilitation is beneficial in reducing post-surgical morbidity and *** investigated physical activity(PA)in patients awaiting LT in a country with long waiting ***:Prospective,single center,longitudinal study in Bern,Switzerland between June 2019 and February 2020(halted due to SARS-CoV-2 pandemic),with follow-up data up to six months *** were instructed to use a wrist tracker(FitBit)to monitor PA,which was assessed using mixed-effects generalized linear *** study was approved by the local ethics committee(BASEC ID 2019-00606).Results:Thirty-five patients were included[71%male,median 59 years,body mass index(BMI)28 kg/m^(2),lab Model End-Stage Liver Disease(MELD)11],17(49%)pre-frail and 5(14%)frail according to the Liver Frailty Index(LFI).Twenty-eight patients underwent transplantation with 0 ninety-day mortality and 15(53.6%)composite adverse clinical *** daily steps were 4,661[interquartile range(IQR),1,685-8,609]and weekly moderate PA(MPA)was 41 min(IQR,0-127 min).Longitudinal analysis showed that female patients and patients on nutritional support had an increase in MPA between weeks 20 and 40.A significant decrease was seen in MPA after week 40,whilst no significant association was seen with age,Child-Pugh Score,LFI or quality of life at time of *** was significantly associated with the occurrence of the composite clinical endpoint after week 30 of waiting time(odds ratio 0.882,P=0.026).World Health Organization(WHO)-recommended MPA was significantly associated with less adverse composite clinical outcomes(P<0.001).Conclusions:In patients listed for LT,MPA decreased over time,showing a significant association with adverse outcome,specifically after week 30 on the waiting *** data support the implem

The critically ill polytrauma patient presents with a series of associated pathophysiologies secondary to the traumatic injuries. The most important include systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), sepsis, oxidative stress (OS), metabolic disorders, and finally multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and death. The poor outcome of these patients is related to the association of the aforementioned pathologies. The nutrition of the critically ill polytrauma patient is a distinct challenge because of the rapid changes in terms of energetic needs associated with hypermetabolism, sepsis, SIRS, and OS. Moreover, it has been proven that inadequate nutrition can prolong the time spent on a mechanical ventilator and the length of stay in an intensive care unit (ICU). A series of mathematical equations can predict the energy expenditure (EE), but they have disadvantages, such as the fact that they cannot predict the EE accurately in the case of patients with hypermetabolism. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is another method used for evaluating and monitoring the energy status of critically ill patients. In this update paper, we present a series of pathophysiological aspects associated with the metabolic disaster affecting the critically ill polytrauma patient. Furthermore, we present different non-invasive monitoring methods that could help the intensive care physician in the adequate management of this type of patient.

Giant androgen-producing adrenocortical carcinoma with atrial flutter: A case report and review of the literature

This work is an attempt to predict the solubility of 60 volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in triethylene glycol aimed at thermodynamically testing the suitability of this solvent as an absorbent for the selected *** VOC main groups studied were alkanes,alkenes,alkynes,aldehydes,carboxylic acids and *** Modified UNIFAC Dortmund and Lyngby models were to study the required phase equilibrium as a function of temperature and *** glycol was found to be suitable for the absorption of low molecular weight aldehydes,alcohols and carboxylic ***,the infinite dilution activity coefficients computed in this study were low(below 100) indicating that the polymeric solvent studied in this work gave favourable phase equilibrium compared to water,the common industrial *** solubility of VOCs was also found to decrease with increase in solute molecular *** with literature findings,the Dortmund performed better than the Lyngby *** both models failed to accurately predict phase equilibrium *** authors therefore agree with literature findings that a specialised group interaction needs to be created for this solvent in the UNIFAC models in order to satisfactorily predict activity coefficients for the studied binary interactions.

BACKGROUND Adrenocortical carcinoma(ACC),the second most aggressive malignant tumor,lacks epidemiological data worldwide;therefore,every new case can improve the understanding of the pathology and treatment of this *** SUMMARY We present the case of a 66-year-old Caucasian woman with a giant androgenproducing ACC(21 cm×17 cm×12 cm;2100 g),without metastases,which unusually presented with an acute onset of atrial flutter and congestive heart *** cardiac complications observed in our case support the hypothesis that androgen excess in women is a cardiovascular risk *** excess in women can be a rare cause of reversible dilated cardiomyopathy,therefore a comprehensive approach to the patient is essential to improve the recognition of androgen-secreting *** atrial flutter was remitted after initiation of drug treatment during *** severe heart failure was totally remitted at 6 mo after radical open surgery to remove the giant *** Radical open surgery to remove a giant androgen-producing ACC was the firstline treatment to cure the excess of androgen,which determined the total remission of cardiac complications at 6 mo after surgery in the women of this case report.

Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2(rhBMP-2)has been FDA-approved for lumbar fusion,but supraphysiologic initial burst release due to suboptimal carrier and late excess bone resorption caused by osteoclast activation have limited its clinical *** strategy to mitigate the pro-osteoclast side effect of rhBMP-2 is to give systemic bisphosphonates,but it presents challenges with systemic side effects and low local *** aim of this in vivo study was to analyze if posterolateral spinal fusion(PLF)could be improved by utilizing a calcium sulfate/hydroxyapatite(CaS/HA)carrier co-delivering rhBMP-2 and zoledronic acid(ZA).Six groups were allocated(CaS/HA,CaS/HA+BMP-2,CaS/HA+systemic ZA,CaS/HA+local ZA,CaS/HA+BMP-2+systemic ZA,and CaS/HA+BMP-2+local ZA).10-week-old male Wistar rats,were randomly assigned to undergo L4-L5 PLF with implantation of group-dependent *** 3 and 6 weeks,the animals were euthanized for radiography,μCT,histological staining,or biomechanical testing to evaluate spinal *** results demonstrated that the CaS/HA biomaterial alone or in combination with local or systemic ZA didn’t support ***,the delivery of rhBMP-2 significantly promoted *** systemic ZA with rhBMP-2 didn’t enhance spinal ***,the co-delivery of rhBMP-2 and ZA using the CaS/HA carrier significantly enhanced and accelerated PLF,without inhibiting systemic bone turnover,and potentially reduced the dose of ***,the treatment regimen of CaS/HA biomaterial co-delivering rhBMP-2 and ZA could potentially be a safe and cost-effective off-the-shelf bioactive bone substitute to enhance spinal fusion.
