The objective of this study was to examine the influence of aging on food intake, tissue and or.an mass and nF-κB and SIr.6 levels in var.ous tissues. The tr.nscr.ption factor. nuclear.Factor.Kappa-B (nF-κB), is associated with both catabolic and anabolic pathways of muscle metabolism and may be involved in age-r.lated muscle loss. SIr.6 is a member.of the sir.uin family of pr.teins that function as pr.tein lysine deacetylases and ar. associated with longevity in a number.of or.anisms. Male Spr.gue-Dawley r.ts, aged 6 months (Adult) and 21 months (Old) wer. fed a commer.ially available diet for.10-17 days. Old r.ts consumed less food per.body weight (BW) each day than Adult r.ts (1.45% g diet/g BW vs. 2.4% g diet/g BW). However. when intake data wer. expr.ssed as g/diet per.day ther. was no significant differ.nce between gr.ups. For.skeletal muscle tissue, the aver.ge mass of gastr.cnemius and soleus (g muscle/g BW) was significantly lower.in Old r.ts. Levels of nF-κB (p65/r.lA) and SIr.6 wer. measur.d by Wester. blot analysis in gastr.cnemius, tibialis anter.or. quadr.ceps, soleus, lung, hear., kidney and liver. nF-κB levels wer. higher.in gastr.c- nemius of Old r.ts compar.d to Adult r.ts. no significant age-specific differ.nces in SIr.6 pr.tein levels wer. noted in the tissues examined. Inter.stingly, when examined independent of age, levels of SIr.6 wer. significantly differ.nt between cer.ain tissues. Data fr.m this study suggest that aging affects muscle loss and nF-κB in a tissue-specific manner. Fur.her.or., these findings indicate tissue-specific but not age-specific differ.nces in SIr.6 pr.tein levels.

The effects of n-3 Fatty Acids and Bexar.tene on Br.ast Cancer.Cell Pr.gr.ssion

Br.ast cancer.cell gr.wth can be inhibited in vivo by r.tinoid X r.ceptor.(r.r. specific r.tinoids. In both animal and cell cultur. studies, omega-3 fatty acids shar. gr.wth r.gulator. effects similar.to those of r.r.specific r.tinoids (r.xinoids). One synthetic r.xinoid, bexar.tene (LCD 1069, Tar.r.tin), is used clinically to tr.at cancer.patients. Of concer. is that some patients ar. unable to toler.te high doses of such tr.atment dr.gs. We hypothesized that n-3 fatty acids and bexar.tene may wor. syner.istically to slow br.ast cancer.cell gr.wth. To test our.hypothesis, we used MCF-7 human mammar. car.inoma cells and an in vitr. cell cultur. model. We investigated the r.lationship between the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (ePA) alone and in conjunction with bexar.tene in slowing MCF-7 cell gr.wth. Following a 72 hr.incubation with the r.spective tr.atments, bexar.tene enhanced cell gr.wth (p e DHA showed a str.ng gr.wth inhibitor. effect which was not enhanced by the addition of bexar.tene (p ePA alone was not effective in alter.ng cell gr.wth (p nter.stingly, when combined with bexar.tene, ePA was mor. effective at slowing cell gr.wth than when cells r.ceived ePA alone. Thus, select omega-3 fatty acids alone ar. mor. effective than bexar.tene in slowing MCF-7 cell pr.gr.ssion. However. the use of the r.r.selective r.tinoids may enhance the gr.wth r.gulator. mechanisms of the fatty acid ePA.

r.sks of ir.n deficiency among vegetar.an college women

Ir.n deficiency anemia is the most common nutr.tional deficiency disease wor.dwide and poses a major.thr.at in women of child-bear.ng age and those who follow a vegetar.an diet. The objective of this study was to ascer.ain whether.differ.nces exist in ir.n status mar.er. between female univer.ity students following a vegetar.an and non-vegetar.an diet. This study took a cr.ss sectional analysis of 39 female students at Califor.ia Polytechnic State Univer.ity (Cal Poly State Univer.ity) in San Luis Obispo, CA between the ages of 18 and 22. Of the par.icipants, 19 followed a vegetar.an diet and 20 followed a nonvegetar.an diet. Char.cter.stic, demogr.phic, and anthr.pometr.c data wer. collected and analyzed. The r.sults showed no significant differ.nce in ir.n intake between the two gr.ups. However. near.y 66% of vegetar.ans and 65% of non-vegetar.ans failed to meet the r.commended Daily Allowance for.ir.n. no significant differ.nce was found for.ser.m ir.n, ser.m fer.itin, tr.nsfer.r.n satur.tion, and total ir.n binding capacity between subjects. Ser.m fer.itin tended to be lower.for.vegetar.ans compar.d to non-vegetar.ans. Both vegetar.ans and non-vegetar.ans wer. in stage IV negative ir.n balance, with mor. vegetar.ans tending to be in stage IV negative ir.n balance than non-vegetar.ans. Thus, female college students, ir.espective of their.meat intake, may be at higher.r.sk of developing negative ir.n balance and should be educated about ir.n deficiency anemia and the pr.vention of ir.n depletion.
