Recruitment and functionality traits as bioindicators of ecological restoration success in the Lurg Hills district,Victoria,Australia

Introduction:The Regent Honeyeater Project commenced ecological restoration in the Lurg district in 1994,with an aim to restore habitats for the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater Anthochaera phrygia and a range of other threatened and declining *** this context,our study aimed to explore whether plant reproduction can be an effective measure of ecological restoration ***:Evaluation involved comparing attributes at unrestored,restored and remnant sites to establish whether sites displayed evidence of a clear restoration *** age classes(unrestored,4–6 years old,8–10 years old,12–14 years old and remnant areas)and two landforms(upper hills and lower hills)were *** diversity of woody plant species—which have easily recognisable reproductive material and which all recruit seedlings—provides easily measured parameters that have the potential to allow the determination of early establishment success and long-term ecological development of restored ***:Restoration plantings developed in a hybrid state towards a benchmark in the lower hills;seedling species composition differed significantly among age classes,increasing in similarity with time since restoration,with some divergence from the target *** of functional groups with reproductive outputs was also significantly different among age classes;however,a restoration trajectory was only evident in the upper hills where sites converged towards the target ***:Divergence or deviation from the restoration trajectory was not deemed to be a restoration failure,as the variety of functional groups with fruits and diversity of seedlings recruiting indicated a potential increase in resilience in the future due to greater variability across the *** recruitment was effective in detecting development trends towards a restoration target in this study and therefore may be a useful measure that contributes to determining ecological

The Collaborative Cross( CC) is a powerful genetic resource with a wide range of applications in medical research. It is a multiparental genetic reference population,composed of 200 recombinant inbred mouse strains. It was designed to be a resource for rapid mapping of genes that mediate complex traits. The CC has been produced following an intense breeding program that had taken over ten years to complete. It is now becoming available to the research community. While advances in human genetic technologies over the last decade have been substantial,the CC provides the ability to make discoveries not possible with other methods or resources. It can be applied to any subject that can be measured or modelled in the mouse. Here,we discuss a range of applications for which the CC can be used,with examples taken from the early characterization of this powerful resource.

Olfaction and reaction: The role of olfactory and hypothalamic investment in the antipredator responses to chemical alarm cues by northern redbelly dace

Elevated CO_2 Accelerates Phosphorus Depletion by Common Bean(Phaseolus vulgaris) in Association with Altered Leaf Biochemical Properties

Phosphorus （P） is a major limiting factor for plant productivity in many ecosystems and agriculture. The projected increase in atmospheric CO2 is likely to result in changes in plant mineral consumption and growth. We studied P depletion by common bean （Phaseolus vulgaris） cultured hydroponically under ambient （377±77μmol mol^-1） or elevated （650±32 μmol mol^-1） CO2 in media of low or high P. Under elevated CO2 compared to ambient CO2, the maximum P depletion rate increased by 98% at low P and 250% at high P, and P was depleted about 2-5 weeks sooner; leaf acid phosphatase （APase） activity and chlorophyll content both increased significantly; root-to-shoot ratio increased significantly at high P, although it was unaffected at low P; lateral root respiration rate showed no change, suggesting that COs did not affect P depletion via metabolic changes to the roots; the total biomass at final harvest was significantly higher at both low and high P. Our data showed that the increased rate and amount of P depletion during plant growth under elevated CO2 occurred in association with alterations in leaf biochemical properties, i.e., enhanced activities of leaf APase and increased leaf chlorophyll content.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Surfaces on Aluminum Alloy Via Electrodeposition of Copper Followed by Electrochemical Modification

Superhydrophobic aluminum surfaces have been prepared by means of electrodeposition of copper on aluminum surfaces, followed by electrochemical modification using stearic acid organic molecules. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) images show that the electrodeposited copper films follow "island growth mode" in the form of microdots and their number densities increase with the rise of the negative deposition potentials. At an electrodeposition potential of-0.2 V the number density of the copper microdots are found to be 4.5×104cm^(-2)that are increased to 2.9×105cm^(-2)at a potential of-0.8 V. Systematically, the distances between the microdots are found to be reduced from 26.6 μm to 11.03 μm with the increase of negative electrochemical potential from-0.2 V to-0.8 V. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses have confirmed the formation of copper stearate on the stearic acid modified copper films. The roughness of the stearic acid modified electrodeposited copper films is found to increase with the increase in the density of the copper microdots. A critical copper deposition potential of-0.6 V in conjunction with the stearic acid modification provides a surface roughness of 6.2 μm with a water contact angle of 157?, resulting in superhydrophobic properties on the aluminum substrates.

Surgical management in pediatric neuroblastoma diagnosis and treatment:a 20-year,single-center experience

Background The currently utilized International Neuroblastoma Risk Group(INRG)staging system developed in 2009 uses image-defined risk factors as a measure of surgical risk,separating resectable neuroblastoma from those best preceded by *** previous International Neuroblastoma Staging System was based primarily on surgical *** hypothesized there would be a change to the role of the surgeon in neuroblastoma treatment in the more recent *** This is a single center 20-year retrospective analysis of 104 patients with International Classification of Diseases-9 and-10 codes for *** demographics,tumor site,cancer treatment modality,survival,biopsy technique,surgical intervention,and pathology staging were *** was analyzed by analysis of variance(ANOVA)and Student’s t *** There was a decrease in open surgeries for extra-adrenal neuroblastomas in the later decade(77%,31%,P=0.01).There was a narrowing of the time interval to surgery in the later cohort,likely as a result of uniformity in surgical timing on treatment protocols relying on INRG *** Our findings mirror changes in practice patterns *** found an increase in minimally invasive approaches but did not find a difference in the role of the surgeon under the INRG staging system.

A Strong Stability Preserving Analysis for Explicit Multistage Two-Derivative Time-Stepping Schemes Based on Taylor Series Conditions

High-order strong stability preserving(SSP)time discretizations are often needed to ensure the nonlinear(and sometimes non-inner-product)strong stability properties of spatial discretizations specially designed for the solution of hyperbolic ***-derivative time-stepping methods have recently been increasingly used for evolving hyperbolic PDEs,and the strong stability properties of these methods are of *** our prior work we explored time discretizations that preserve the strong stability properties of spatial discretizations coupled with forward Euler and a second-derivative ***,many spatial discretizations do not satisfy strong stability properties when coupled with this second-derivative formulation,but rather with a more natural Taylor series *** this work we demonstrate sufficient conditions for an explicit two-derivative multistage method to preserve the strong stability properties of spatial discretizations in a forward Euler and Taylor series *** call these strong stability preserving Taylor series(SSP-TS)*** also prove that the maximal order of SSP-TS methods is p=6,and define an optimization procedure that allows us to find such SSP *** types of these methods are presented and their efficiency ***,these methods are tested on several PDEs to demonstrate the benefit of SSP-TS methods,the need for the SSP property,and the sharpness of the SSP time-step in many cases.

Late Neoproterozoic adakitic magmatism within the Eastern Arabian Nubian Shield has been dated at633.2±9.0 Ma(2σ).These magnas intrude the forearc Ad Dawadimi Basin,which is composed of metapelitic schists and greywacke along with ophiolitic melanges of boninitic affinity which underwent inversion and deformation by^620 *** adakitic magmatism,while intruding parts of the Ad Dawadimi Basin,predates this deformation,but is possibly coincident with basin *** adakitic magmatism requires melting of an amphibolite or eclogitic source,empirical and experimental constraints require anomalously hot supra-subduction zone *** that this magmatism immediately predates basin inversion,these magmas possibly pinpoint the timing of the slab breaking,marking the terminal stages of arc magmatism,terrane accretion and the influx of hot oceanic asthenospheric *** influx of hot asthenospheric mantle may also be responsible for postcolltsional A-type magmatism.

Physical fitness before and during the COVID-19 pandemic:Results of annual national physical fitness surveillance among 16,647,699 Japanese children and adolescents between 2013 and 2021

Background:Limited nationally representative evidence is available on temporal trends in physical fitness(PF)for children and adolescents during the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** primary aim was to examine the temporal trends in PF for Japanese children and adolescents before and during the COVID-19 *** secondary aim was to estimate the concurrent trends in body size(measured as body mass and height)and movement behaviors(exercise,screen,and sleep time).Methods:Census PF data for children in Grade 5(aged 10-11 years)and adolescents in Grade 8(aged 13-14 years)were obtained for the years 2013-2021 from the National Survey of Physical Fitness,Athletic Performance,and Exercise Habits in Japan(n=16,647,699).PF and body size were objectively measured,and movement behaviors were *** sample-weighted linear regression,temporal trends in mean PF were calculated before the pandemic(2013-2019)and during the pandemic(2019-2021)with adjustments for age,sex,body size,and exercise ***:When adjusted for age,sex,body size,and exercise time,there were significant declines in PF during the pandemic,with the largest declines observed in 20-m shuttle run(standardized(Cohen’s)effect size(ES)=-0.109 per annum(p.a.))and sit-ups performance(ES=-0.133p.a.).The magnitude of the declines in 20-m shuttle run and sit-ups performances were 18-and 15-fold larger,respectively,than the improvements seen before the pandemic(2013-2019),after adjusting for age,sex,body size,and exercise *** the pandemic,both body mass and screen time significantly increased,and exercise time ***:Declines in 20-m shuttle run and sit-ups performances suggest corresponding declines in population health during the COVID-19pandemic.

Compensatory foraging in Trinidadian guppies： Effects of acute and chronic predation threats

In response to acute predation threats, prey may sacrifice foraging opportunities in favour of increased predator avoidance. Under conditions of high or frequent predation risk, such tradeoffs may lead to reduced fitness. Here, we test the pre diction that prey reduce the costs associated with lost opportunities following acute predation threats by exhibiting shortterm compensatory foraging responses. Under seminatural conditions, we exposed female guppies Poecilia reticulate from high and low predation risk sites to one of three levels of acute predation threat （high, intermediate or low concentrations of conspecific alarm cues）. Our results confirm previous reports, demonstrating that guppies from a high predation site were consistently ＇bolder＇（shorter escape latencies） and exhibited graded threatsensitive responses to different simulated threat levels while those from the low predation site were ＇shyer＇ and exhibited nongraded responses. Most importantly, we found that when guppies from low predation sites resumed foraging, they did so at rates significantly lower than baseline rates. However, guppies from high preda tion sites resumed foraging either at rates equal to baseline （in response to low or intemaediate risk stimuli） or significantly in creased relative to baseline rates （in response to high risk stimuli）. Together, these results highlight a complex compensatory be havioral mechanism that may allow prey to reduce the longterm costs associated with predator avoidance [Current Zoology 60 （3）： 323-332, 2014 ].
