Exploring injury severity of children and adolescents involved in traffic crashes in Greece

For the purpose of exploring the factors affecting injury severity of children and adolescents involved in traffic crashes in Greece,disaggregate crash data including 13,431 involving children and adolescents from all regions of Greece for the period 2006–2015 were *** order to identify factors affecting injury severity and account for potential unobserved heterogeneity,a series of mixed logit models were *** explore and address potential temporal instability of crash-related risk factors,the likelihood ratio test was *** indicated that night crashes,crashes outside urban areas as well as crashes involving bicycles or powered-two-wheelers are associated with higher injury severity of children and ***,crashes involving pedestrians are associated with lower injury severity than head-on collisions and run-off-road collisions with fixed *** and sideswipe crashes also result in lower injury *** likelihood ratio test indicated that crash-related factors are instable when comparing the models utilizing data before and after 2010 *** study contributes to the current knowledge in the field,as to the best of our knowledge this is the first study that addresses unobserved heterogeneity when analyzing child and adolescent injury ***,the findings of this study provide useful insights and could assist in unveiling crash risk factors and prioritize programs and measures to promote road safety of children and adolescents.

Social Media have increasingly provided data about the movement of people in cities making them useful in understanding the daily life of people in different *** useful for travel analysis is when Social Media users allow(voluntarily or not)tracing their movement using geotagged information of their communication with these online *** this paper we use geotagged tweets from 10 cities in the European Union and United States of America to extract spatiotemporal patterns,study differences and commonalities among these cities,and explore the nature of user location *** analysis here shows the distinction between residents and tourists is fundamental for the development of city-wide *** of repeated rates of location(recurrence)can be used to define activity *** and similarities across different geographies emerge from this analysis in terms of local distributions but also in terms of the worldwide reach among the cities explored *** comparison of the temporal signature between geotagged and non-geotagged tweets also shows similar temporal distributions that capture in essence city rhythms of tweets and activity spaces.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors and pancreatic cancer:Are there any promising clinical trials?

In this work,38 different organic emerging contaminants(ECs),belonging to various chemical classes such as pharmaceuticals(PhCs),endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs),benzotriazoles(BTRs),benzothiazoles(BTHs),and perfluorinated compounds(PFCs),were initially identified and quantified in the biologically treated wastewater collected from Athens’(Greece)Sewage Treatment Plant(STP).Processes already used in existing STPs such as microfiltration(MF),nanofiltration(NF),ultrafiltration(UF),UV radiation,and powdered activated carbon(PAC)were assessed for ECs’removal,under the conditions that represent their actual application for disinfection or advanced wastewater *** results indicated that MF removed only one out of the 38 ECs and hence it was selected as pretreatment step for the other *** radiation in the studied conditions showed low to moderate removal for 5 out of the 38 *** showed better results than UF due to the smaller pore sizes of the filtration ***,this enhancement was observed mainly for 8 compounds originating from the classes of PhCs and PFCs,while the removal of EDCs was not statistically *** the various studied technologies,PAC stands out due to its capability to sufficiently remove most *** particular,removal rates higher than 70%were observed for 9 compounds,22 were partially removed,while 7 demonstrated low removal *** on our screening experiments,future research should focus on scaling-up PAC in actual conditions,combining PAC with other processes,and conduct a complete economic and environmental assessment of the treatment.

The impact of anti-corruption measures and risk effects on equity incentives and financial misreporting in China

This study examines the effects of anti-corruption and equity incentive risk on financial misreporting in the context of China’s unique corporate ownership structure and governance *** a sample comprising 2,708 cases of financial restatement over the 2007-2017 *** key findings suggest that managers’shareholdings are significantly and positively associated with their firms’financial misreporting,and certain equity risk factors dramatically alter Chinese corporate ***,managers’motivation to misreport is significantly more pronounced in non-state owned enterprises(nonSOEs),suggesting that equity incentive risk effects mitigate the"absence of ownership"problem believed to affect *** in highly competitive industries and firms with low institutional ownership are found to be highly motivated to misreport performance.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive human cancers,with more than 200 000 deaths worldwide every *** recent efforts,conventional treatment approaches,such as surgery and classic chemotherapy,have only slightly improved patient *** effective and well-tolerated therapies are required to reverse the current poor prognosis of this type of *** new agents,histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) are now being *** have multiple biological effects related to acetylation of histones and many non-histone proteins that are involved in regulation of gene expression,apoptosis,cell cycle progression and *** induce cell cycle arrest and can activate the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways of apoptosis in different cancer cell *** the present review,the main mechanisms by which HDACIs act in pancreatic cancer cells in vitro,as well as their antiproliferative effects in animal models are *** constitute a promising treatment for pancreatic cancer with encouraging anti-tumor ef-fects,at well-tolerated doses.

Spinal Motion Segments-Ⅰ:Concept for a Subject-specific Analogue Model

Most commercial spine analogues are not intended for biomechanical testing,and those developed for this purpose are expensive and yet still fail to replicate the mechanical performance of biological ***-specific analogues that address these limitations and avoid the ethical restrictions surrounding the use of human cadavers are therefore *** present a method for the production and characterisation of biofidelic,patient-specific,Spine Motion Segment(SMS=2 vertebrae and the disk in between)analogues that allow for the biological variability encountered when dealing with real *** spine segments(L1-LA)were scanned by computed tomography,and 3D models were printed in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS).Four biological specimens and four ABS motion segments were tested,three of which were further segmented into two Vertebral Bodies(VBs)with their intervertebral disc(IVD).All segments were loaded axially at 0.6 mm·min-1(strain-rate range 6×10-4 s-1-10×10-4 s-1).The artificial VBs behaved like biological segments within the elastic region,but the best two-part artificial IVD were^15%less stiffthan the biological ***-speed images recorded during compressive loading allowed full-field strains to be *** compression of the spine motion segments,IVDs experienced higher strains than VBs as *** method allows the rapid,inexpensive and reliable production of patient-specific 3D-printed analogues,which morphologically resemble the real ones,and whose mechanical behaviour is comparable to real biological spine motion segments and this is their biggest asset.

Most commercially available spine analogues are not intended for biomechanical testing,and the few that are suitable for using in conjunction with implants and devices to allow a hands-on practice on operative procedures are very expensive and still none of these offers patient-specific analogues that can be accessed within reasonable time and price ***-made spine analogues would also avoid the ethical restrictions surrounding the use of biological specimens and complications arising from their inherent biological *** we sought to improve the biofidelity and accuracy of a patient-specific motion segment analogue that we presented *** models were made by acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS)in 3D printing of porcine spine segments(T12-L5)from microCT scan data,and were tested in axial loading at 0.6 ***-1(strain rate range 6×10^-4 s^-1-10×10^-4 s^-1).In this paper we have sought to improve the biofidelity of these analogue models by concentrating in improving the two most critical aspects of the mechanical behaviour:the material used for the intervertebral disc and the influence of the facet *** deformations were followed by use of Digital Image Correlation(DIC)and consequently different scanning resolutions and data acquisition techniques were also explored and compared to determine their *** found that the selection of an appropriate intervertebral disc simulant(PT Flex 85)achieved a realistic force/displacement response and also that the facet joints play a key role in achieving a biofidelic behaviour for the entire motion *** have therefore overall confirmed the feasibility of producing,by rapid and inexpensive 3D-printing methods,high-quality patient-specific spine analogue models suitable for biomechanical testing and practice.
