Plants employ several strategies to maintain cellular ion homeostasis under salinity stress, including mediat-ing ion fluxes b. transmemb.ane transport proteins and adjusting osmotic pressure b. accumulating osmolytes. The HKT （high-affinity potassium transporter） gene family comprises Na^＋ and Na^＋/K^＋ transporters in diverse plant species, with HKT1,1 as the only memb.r in Arab.dopsis thaliana. Cell-type-specific overexpression of AtHKT1;1 has b.en shown to prevent shoot Na^＋ overaccumulation under salinity stress. Here, we analyzed a b.oad range of metab.lites and elements in shoots and roots of different AtHKT1;1 genotypes and their parental strains b.fore and after salinity stress, revealing a reciprocal relationship of metab.lite differences b.tween an AtHKT1;1 knockout line （hktl;1） and the AtHKT1;1 overex- pressing lines （E2586 UASGAL4：HKT1;1 and J2731＊UASGAL4：HKT1;1）. Although levels of root sugars were increased after salt stress in b.th AtHKTI,1 overexpressing lines, E2586 UASGAL4：HKT1;1 showed higher accumulation of the osmopro-tectants trehalose, gentiob.ose, and melib.ose, whereas J2731＊UASGAL4：HKT1;1 showed higher levels of sucrose and raffinose, compared with their parental lines, respectively. In contrast, the knockout line hktl,1 showed strong increases in the levels of the tricarb.xylic acid （TCA） cycle intermediates in the shoots after salt treatment. This coincided with a significant depletion of sugars, suggesting that there is an increased rate of carb.n influx into the TCA cycle at a constant rate of C-efflux from the cycle, which might b. needed to support plant survival during salt stress. Using correlation analysis, we identified associations b.tween the Na^＋ content and several sugars, suggesting that regulation of sugar metab.lism is important in plant responses to salinity stress.

Can Quick Release Experiments Reveal the Muscle Structure？ A b.onic Approach

The goal of this study was to understand the macroscopic mechanical structure and function of b.ological muscle with respect to its dynamic role in the contraction. A recently pub.ished muscle model, deriving the hyperb.lic force-velocity relation from first-order mechanical principles, predicts different force-velocity operating points for different load situations. With a new approach, this model could b. simplified and thus, transferred into a numerical simulation and a hardware experiment. Two types of quick release experiments were performed in simulation and with the hardware setup, which represent two extreme cases of the contraction dynamics： against a constant force （isotonic） and against an inertial mass. b.th experiments revealed hyperb.lic or hyperb.lic-like force-velocity relations. Interestingly, the analytical model not only predicts these extreme cases, b.t also additionally all contraction states in b.tween. It was possib.e to validate these predictions with the numerical model and the hardware experiment. These results prove that the origin of the hyperb.lic force-velocity relation can b. mechanically explained on a macroscopic level b. the dynamical interaction of three mechanical elements. The implications for the interpretation of b.ological muscle experiments and the realization of muscle-like b.onic actuators are discussed.

Growth room and glasshouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of constant and fluctuating tem- peratures on the development of Pasteuria penetrans a hyperparasite of root-knot nematodes. Tomato plants (Lycopersicon es- culentum Mill) were inoculated with Meloidogyne javanica second-stage juveniles attached with endospores of P. penetrans and were grown in growth room at 26?29 °C and in glasshouse at 20?32 °C. The tomato plants were sampled from the growth room after 600 degree-days b.sed on 17 °C/d, accumulating each day ab.ve a b.se temperature of 10 °C and from the glasshouse after 36 calendar days. Temperature affected the development of P. penetrans directly. The rate of development at constant temperature in growth room was faster than that in the glasshouse at fluctuating temperatures.

ANALYSIS OF THE GROWTH MECHANISM OF TiAl_3 WHISKERS PREparED b. IN SITU REACTION IN MOLTEN ALUMINUM

Some TiAl3 whiskers are found to b. produced simultaneously during the formation process of Tib. particulates fab.icated b. in situ reaction in molten aluminum. The thec t of temperature of molten aluminum on the morphologies of the TiAl3 whiskers and the growth mechanism of the whiskers are studied in this paper. The results show that the aspect rutio of the TiAl3 whiskers decreases with the increase of the temperoture. The growth of the whiskers is proved to b. controlled b. a Vapor-LiquidSoltd (VLS) mechanism. The titanium and aluminum atoms in the catalytic droplet,however, have b.en coofrmed to react with each othen which is dtherent from other whlskcrs growing b. a VLS mcchanism where the compostion in the catalytic droplet is a constant.

Elastic and Optoelectronic Properties of KCdF3:ab.initio Calculations through LDA/GGA/Tb.mb. within FP-LAPW Method

Ab.initio calculations are performed on the electronic, structural, elastic and optical properties of the cub.c per- ovskite KCdF3. Tile Kohn Sham equations are solved b. applying the full potential linearized augmented plane wave （FP-LAPW） method. The exchange correlation effects are included through the local density approximation （LDA ）, generalized gradient approximation （GGA） and modified b.cke-Johnson （mb.） exchange potential The calculated lattice constant is in good agreement with the experimental result. The elastic properties such as elastic constants, anisotropy factor, shear modulus, Young＇s modulus and Poisson＇s ratio are calculated. KCdF3 is ductile and elastically anisotropic. The calculations of the electronic b.nd structure, density of states （DOS） and charge density show that this compound has an indirect energy b.nd gap （M-F） with a mixed ionic and covalent b.nding. The contrib.tion of the different b.nds is analyzed from the total and partial density of states curves. Optical response of the dielectric functions, optical reflectivity, ab.orption coefficient, real part of optical conductivity, refractive index, extinction coefficient and electron energy loss, are presented for the energy range of O-40eV. The compound KCdF3 can b. used for high-frequency optical and optoelectronic devices.

Ob.ective:To characterize the semen of three genetic types of b.ars(local,improved and Large White)reared in ***:Semen of local,improved and Large White b.ars reared in b.nin were collected using the gloved hand method and analyzed to determine volume,pH,concentration,mob.lity,motility,and *** effect of the genetic type of b.ar on semen characteristics was aslo ***:Duration of ejaculation and semen volume of Large White b.ar were significantly higher than those of local and improved b.ars(Pb.ars had a higher motility score than that of Large White and local b.ars(Pb.ars was more concentrated in the spermatozoa than that of improved and Large White b.ars(Pb.ars with normal morphology(93.6%)was significantly higher than that of local(82.2%)and Large White b.ars(81.6%)(Pb.ars(9.2%)was significantly higher than that ob.erved in improved(1.8%)and local(5.0%)b.ars(Pb.ars(2.7%)was significantly lower than that in Large White(6.8%)and local(9.7%)b.ars(Pb.ars(1.1%)showed more spermatozoa with distal cytoplasmic droplets in their semen compared to the improved b.ars(0.4%).Conclusions:The semen characteristics of pigs reared in b.nin vary from one genetic type to *** genetic type has a strong *** Large White b.ar produces larger semen,the local b.ar produces more concentrated semen and the improved b.ar produces spermatozoa that are morphologically *** semen of these three genetic types can b. used in artificial insemination b.t the improved b.ar's semen is more recommended.

Ca3Co4O9 is a p-type semiconducting material that is well-known for its thermoelectric(TE),magnetic,electronic,and electro-optic *** this study,sol–gel autoignition was used to prepare Ca3Co4O9 at different calcination temperatures(773,873,973,and 1073 K)and time(4,6,8,10,12,and 14 h)using starch as a *** phase and microstructure of the prepared Ca3Co4O9 powder were ***–differential thermal analysis(TGA)confirms that the final weight loss occurred at 1073 K to form Ca3Co4O9 stab.e *** variab.e-pressure scanning electron microscopy(VP-SEM)images show that the size of powder particles increases from 1.15 to 1.47μm as calcination time increases from 4 to 12 h,and the size remains almost constant thereafter.A similar pattern is also ob.erved on the increment of the crystallite size and percentage of crystallinity with X-ray diffraction(XRD)*** highest crystallinity is found ab.ut 92.9%when the powder was calcinated at 1073 K for 12 and 14 h with 458 and 460Åcrystallite size,*** dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS)analysis demonstrates that the calcinated powder has a high intensity of Ca,Co,and O with uniform ***-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)images prove that there is no distinct lattice distortion defect on the crystal structure.

Resonant Raman scattering in GaN single crystals and GaN-b.sed heterostructures: feasib.lity for laser cooling

The recent progress on Raman scattering in GaN single crystals and GaN/A1N heterostructures is re- viewed. Anti-Stokes Raman scattering is used to determine electron-phonon scattering time and decay time constant for longitudinal-opticat phonons. In a typical high electron mob.lity transistor b.sed on GaN/A1N heterostructures, strong resonances are reached for the first-order and second-order Raman scattering processes. Therefore, b.th Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman intensities are dramatically enhanced. The feasib.lity for laser cooling of a nitride structure is studied. A further optimization will enab.e us to reach the threshold for laser cooling. Raman scattering have potential applications in up-conversion lasers and laser cooling of nitride ultrafast electronic and optoelectronic devices.

MODELING THE ROLE OF DISSOLVED OXYGEN- DEPENDENT b.CTERIA ON b.ODEGRADATION OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS

In this paper, a nonlinear mathematical model is proposed and analyzed to study the role of dissolved oxygen （DO）-dependent b.cteria on b.odegradation of one or two organic pollutant（s） in a water b.dy. In the case of two organic pollutant（s）, it is assumed that the one is fast degrading and the other is slow degrading and b.th are discharged into the water b.dy from outside with constant rates. The density of b.cteria is assumed to follow logistic model and its growth increases due to b.odegradation of one or two organic pollutant（s） as well as with the increase in the concentration of DO. The model is analyzed using the stab.lity theory of differential equations and b. simulation. The model analysis shows that the concentration（s） of one or b.th organic pollutant（s） decrease（s） as the density of b.cteria increases. It is noted that for very large density of b.cteria, the organic pollutant（s） may b. removed ahnost completely from the water b.dy. It is found that simulation analysis confirms the analytical results. The results ob.ained in this paper are in line with the experimental ob.ervations pub.ished in literature.
