Electronic waste(e-waste)and diabetes are global challenges to modern ***,solving these two challenges together has been challenging until ***,we propose a laser-induced transfer method to fabricate portable glucose sensors by recycling copper from *** bring up a laser-induced full-automatic fabrication method for synthesizing continuous heterogeneous Cu_(x)O(h-Cu_(x)O)nano-skeletons electrode for glucose sensing,offering rapid(<1 min),clean,air-compatible,and continuous fabrication,applicable to a wide range of Cu-containing *** this approach,h-Cu_(x)O nanoskeletons,with an inner core predominantly composed of Cu_(2)O with lower oxygen content,juxtaposed with an outer layer rich in amorphous Cu_(x)O(a-Cu_(x)O)with higher oxygen content,are derived from discarded printed circuit *** employed in glucose detection,the h-Cu_(x)O nano-skeletons undergo a structural evolution process,transitioning into rigid Cu_(2)O@CuO nano-skeletons prompted by electrochemical *** transformation yields exceptional glucose-sensing performance(sensitivity:9.893 mA mM^(-1) cm^(-2);detection limit:0.34μM),outperforming most previously reported glucose *** functional theory analysis elucidates that the heterogeneous structure facilitates gluconolactone *** glucose detection device has also been downsized to optimize its scalability and portability for convenient integration into people’s everyday lives.

Second malignant neoplasms in childhood cancer survivors in a tertiary paediatric oncology centre in Hong kong, China

Background Childhood cancer survivors were at risk of development of second malignant neoplasms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence, risk factors and outcome of second malignant neoplasms in childhood cancer survivors in a tertiary paediatric oncology centre in Hong kong, China. Methods We performed a retrospective review of patients with childhood cancer treated in Children＇s Cancer Centre in Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong kong, China between May 1984 and June 2009. Case records of patients who developed second malignant neoplasms were reviewed. Results Totally 1374 new cases aged less than 21-year old were treated in our centre in this 25-year study period. Twelve cases developed second malignant neoplasms with 10-year and 20-year cumulative incidence of 1.3% （95% confidence interval 0.3%-2.3%） and 2.9% （95% confidence interval 1.1%-4.7%） respectively. Another 4 cases were referred to us from other centres for the management of second malignant neoplasms. In this cohort of 16 children with second malignant neoplasms, the most frequent second malignant neoplasms were acute leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome （n--6） and central nervous system tumor （n=4）. Median interval between diagnosis of primary and second malignant neoplasms was 7.4 years （range 2.1-13.3 years）. Eight patients developed second solid tumor within the previous irradiated field. Radiotherapy significantly increased the risk of development of second solid tumor in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia （P=0.027）. Seven out of 16 patients who developed second malignant neoplasms had a family histo＇ry of cancer among the first or second-degree relatives. Nine patients died of progression of second malignant neoplasms, mainly resulted from second central nervous system tumor and osteosarcoma. Conclusions Cumulative incidence of second cancer in our centre was comparable to western countries. Radiotherapy was associated with second solid tumour among patients with acute lymphoblast

WAVE ATTENUATION OVER MUD BED: A PSEUDO-PLASTIC MODEL

A two-layer model, with the upper layer being the perfect fluid and the lowerlayer being the pseudo-plastic fluid describing water wave attenuation over mud bed, wasestablished. A simplified method based on the principle of e-quivalcnt work was applied to solve theboundary value problems. The computational results of the model show that the two-layer perfectfluid model and the perfect-viscous fluid model are all special cases of the present model. Thecomplex nonlinear properties of wave attenuation over mud bed, can be explained by the presentmodel, e. g., the wave dissipation rale decreases wilh the wave height in certain cases, while thesmall wave propagates over mud bed with less energy dissipation and large wave attenuates rapidly inother cases. Other factors influencing the wave attenuation were also discussed.

ARTICULATORY-ACOUSTIC RELATIONS IN PALATAL VOWELS

The study^1 evaluates the quantal theory by analyzing the articulatory-acoustic relations in the four Cantonese palatal vowels[i:y:i y]through investigating the sensitivity of vowel formant frequencies to variation of linguo-palatal constriction location and that of constriction size along the vocal tract length during the vowels,using KMA AG5 0 *** articulatory-acoustic data obtained in this study show non-linear relationship between the up-down and front-back displacements in linguo-palatal constriction during the vowels and the acoustic consequences,which is similar to what the quantal theory *** displacements in constriction location and constriction size result in large spectral *** level of sensitivity of formant frequencies to variation of tongue displacement is lower for the unrounded[i:i]than the rounded counterparts[y:y],suggesting the quantal nature is more apparent in[i:i]than[y:y].In general,for the Cantonese palatal vowels the levels of sensitivity of F1 to the variation of constriction location and that of constriction size are similar,whereas F2 is more sensitive to the variation of constriction size than to the variation of constriction *** latter is similar to the articulatory-acoustic relations in the Knglish vowels reported in the previous studies.

A novel reductive ring-opening reaction of isoxazolidine to form functionalized 1,3-aminoalcohol

Reductive cleavage of the NO bond of isoxazolidine ring with catalytic hydrogenation over Raney nickel was described. Bicyclic isoxazolidines could be effectively converted into the corresponding 1,3-amino-alcohol possessing a sultone or sultam moiety with high conversion and yield when the hydrogenation was catalyzed by freshly prepared Raney nickel under a pressure of 40 psi in the presence of triethylamine.

Rapid testing methods for food contaminants and toxicants

Food safety is one of the major concerns in every country regardless of the economic and social development. The frequent occurrence of food scandals in the world has led the Chinese government to implement several strategies to fortify the food supply system to a high food safety standard. This relies heavily on laboratory testing services but conventional methods for detection of food contaminants and toxicants are limited by sophisticated sample preparation procedures, long analysis time, large instruments and professional personnel to meet the increasing demands. In this review, we have incorporated most of the current and potential rapid detection methods for many notorious food contaminants and toxicants including microbial agents, toxic ions, pesticides, veterinary drugs and preservatives, as well as detection of genetically modified food genes and adulterated edible oil. Development of rapid, accurate, easy-to-use and affordable testing methods could urge food handlers and the public to actively screen for food contaminants and toxicants instead of passively relying on monitoring by the government examination facility. This review also provides several recommendations including how to encourage the public to engage in the food safety management system and provide optimal education and financial assistance that may improve the current Chinese food safety control system.

Summer Monsoon Indices on June Rainfall in Hong kong and Its Vicinity

Climatologically, June is usually the wettest month in Hong kong. With significant interannual variation of the summer monsoon, the rainfall variability in June is also large. As Hong kong is in close proximity to the peripheries of different monsoon regions, the variability of June rainfall largely depends on the relative strength of various monsoon systems. In the present study, a new index comparing the relative condition of the western North Pacific summer monsoon and the South China Sea summer monsoon is developed based on the difference between the respective monsoon indices WNPMI （western North Pacific summer monsoon index） and UMI （unified monsoon index）. It is shown that June rainfall in Hong kong and its vicinity is better correlated with this new index than either WNPMI or UMI alone. Based on the signs of the new index in conjunction with those of WNPMI and UMI, a framework to stratify the monsoon conditions into different configurations together with a simple scheme to summarize the associated rainfall responses is formulated. This study highlights how the rainfall variability on a local or regional scale can be quantified by the broad-scale conditions of different monsoon systems.

AIM:To investigate the safety and diagnostic yield of colonoscopy in Chinese children in whom the procedure is not often ***:We conducted a retrospective review of all colonoscopies in consecutive children who underwent their fi rst diagnostic colonoscopy from Jan 2003 to ***:Seventy-nine children (48 boys,31 girls;mean age 9.2 ± 4.2 years) were identified and reviewed with a total of 82 colonoscopies *** caecal and ileal intubation rates were 97.6% and 75.6% *** patients (50.6%) had a positive diagnosis made in colonoscopy and that included colonic polyps (23),Crohn's disease (12),ulcerative colitis (1),and miscellaneous causes (4).80% of polyps were in the rectosigmoid *** but one were juvenile hamartomatous *** exceptionwas an adenomatous *** mean ages for children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and polyps were 11.3 and 4.3 years *** was no procedure-related ***:Colonoscopy is a safe procedure in our Chinese *** increasing diagnosis of IBD in recent decades may reflect a rising incidence of the disease in our children.
