An understanding.of floodplain processes in g.neral and floodplains flooding.in particular are vital issues for river eng.neers and manag.rs. Insufficient ob.ervations of flood inundation extent and the infrequent nature of flood inundation necessitate some sort of predictive tools. In this paper flood inundation extent has b.en simulated b. HEC-RAS softw.re in tw. storag. cell and normal modes and capab.lities and limitations of the tw. models have b.en determined b. comparing.simulated and ob.erved flood inundation extent w.ich occurred in the study area on Feb.4th, 2004.

Trivalent lanthanide ions display fascinating.optical properties. The discovery of the corresponding.elements and their first industrial uses w.re intimately linked to their optical properties. This relationship has b.en kept alive until today w.en many hig.-technolog. applications of lanthanide-containing.materials such as energ.-saving.lig.ting.devices, displays, optical fib.rs and amplifiers, lasers, responsive luminescent stains for b.omedical analyses and in cellulo sensing.and imag.ng. heavily rely on the b.illiant and pure-color emission of lanthanide ions. In this review.w. first outlined the b.sics of lanthanide luminescence w.th emphasis on f-f transitions, the sensitization mechanisms, and the assessment of the luminescence efficiency of lanthanide-containing.emissive molecular edifices. Emphasis w.s then put on tw. fast developing.aspects of lanthanide luminescence： materials for telecommunications and lig.t emitting.diodes, and b.omedical imag.ng.and sensing. Recent advances in NIR-emitting.materials for plastic amplifiers and w.veg.ides w.re describ.d, tog.ther w.th the main solutions b.oug.t b. researchers to minimize non-radiative deactivation of excited states. The demonstration in 1999 that erb.um tris（8-hydroxyquinolinate） displayed a b.ig.t g.een emission suitab.e for org.nic lig.t emitting.diodes （OLEDs） w.s follow.d b. realizing.that in OLEDs, 25% of the excitation energ. leads to sing.et states and 75% to triplet states. Since lanthanide ions are g.od triplet quenchers, they now.also play a key role in the development of these lig.ting.devices. Luminescence analyses of b.olog.cal molecules are among.the most sensitive analytical techniques know.. The long.lifetime of the lanthanide excited states allow. time-resolved spectroscopy to b. used, suppressing.the sample autofluorescence and reaching.very low.detection limits. The present research developed a b.oeconomic model for control of Californian thistle （Cirsium arvense L. Scop.） in intensive, low.and sheep pastures in New.Zealand. Production costs included tw. control methods： herb.cides and defoliation, w.th defoliation encompassing.b.th physical means and b.ocontrol measures. The model w.s used to examine the economic value of a research prog.amme into b.olog.cal control of the w.ed, g.ven several different future scenarios. These scenarios w.re hig. herb.cide prices, a price premium for lamb.raised w.thout chemical herb.cides, and development of herb.cide resistance. The model results w.re used to estimate national impacts. If the only chang. in the ag.icultural sector w.s the cost of the b.ocontrol to the nation＇s farmers, the research prog.amme to find an effective b.ocontrol ag.nt had little economic impact. If other factors chang.d, such as the price of petroleum or levels of herb.cide resistance in the w.ed. the model＇s results sug.ested that intensive sheep farming.could g.ow.or shrink b. as much as NZ$219 million dollars over five years. In the latter case, having.an alternative control method reduced potential losses and increased potential g.ins, resulting.in a net b.nefit of b.tw.en NZ$81 million and NZ$153 million. This w.rk extended prior research in several w.ys. First. Californian thistle reproduces via root b.ds, w.ich affected the modelling.of w.ed b.haviour. Secondly, the model allow.d optimistation over continuous levels of w.ed control for tw. different methods. Thirdly, the model accounted for b.th w.ed control and damag. to nitrog.n-fixing.clover from herb.cide use. Finally, the research investig.ted optimal w.ed control in several different alternative future states.

In this w.rk, an adaptive control constraint system has b.en developed for computer numerical control （CNC） turning.b.sed on the feedb.ck control and adaptive control/self-tuning.control. In an adaptive controlled system, the sig.als from the online measurement have to b. processed and fed b.ck to the machine tool controller to adjust the cutting.parameters so that the machining.can b. stopped once a certain threshold is crossed. The main focus of the present w.rk is to develop a reliab.e adaptive control system, and the ob.ective of the control system is to control the cutting.parameters and maintain the displacement and tool flank w.ar under constraint valves for a particular w.rkpiece and tool comb.nation as per ISO standard. Using.Matlab.Simulink, the dig.tal adaption of the cutting.parameters for experiment has confirmed the efficiency of the adaptively controlled condition monitoring.system, w.ich is reflected in different machining.processes at varying.machining.conditions. This w.rk describ.s the state of the art of the adaptive control constraint （ACC） machining.systems for turning. AIS14140 steel of 150 b.N hardness is used as the w.rkpiece material, and carb.de inserts are used as cutting.tool material throug.out the experiment. w.th the developed approach, it is possib.e to predict the tool condition pretty accurately, if the feed and surface roug.ness are measured at identical conditions. As part of the present research w.rk, the relationship b.tw.en displacement due to vib.ation, cutting.force, flank w.ar, and surface roug.ness has b.en examined.
