Comparison of three pCR methods for detection of Helicobacter pylori DNA and detection of cagA gene in gastric biopsy specimens

AIM:To comparatively evaluate pCR and other diagnostic methods (the rapid urease test and/or culture) in order to determine which of the three pCR methods (ureA,glmM and 26-kDa,SSA gene) was most appropriate in the diagnosis of Helicobacterpylori(Hpylori) infection and also to evaluate the detection of a putative virulence marker of H pylori,the cage,gene,by pCR in biopsy specimens. METHODS:One hundred and eighty-nine biopsy specimens were collected from 63 patients (three biopsies each) undergoing upper gastroduodenal endoscopy for various dyspeptic *** pCR methods used to detect H pylori DNA directly from biopsies were the glmM,26-kDa, ureA and then cagA was used to compare the culture technique and CLO for urease with the culture technique being used as the gold standard. RESULTS:Thirty-five percent of the biopsies were positive for H pylori DNA using the 3 pCR methods,while 68% of these were positive for the cagA ***-four percent of the biopsies were negative for H pylori DNA in all pCR methods *** remaining 41% were either positive for ureA gene only,glmM only,26-kDa only,or ureA+glmM, ureA+26-kDa,glmM+*** of the 35% positive biopsies,41% and 82% were positive by culture and CLO respectively,while all negative biopsies were also negative by culture and *** A+ infection was also predominantly found in H pylori DNA of the biopsies irrespective of the clinical diagnosis. CONCLUSION:This method is useful for correctly identifying infections caused by H pylori and can be easily applied in our laboratory for diagnostic purposes.

As cancer survival has continued to improve, cancer patients and their sexually intimate partner (SIp) are confronted with a number of issues including sexual function and overall sexual health. Our study objective was to assess changes in sexual function in women undergoing cancer treatment and their SIp, and attempt to identify areas of needed support and improvement. In this questionnaire-based observational study, females (n = 11) completed a Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and for SIp’s (n = 11), a Brief Sexual Function Inventory (BSFI). Level of satisfaction prior to and within 3 months following treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation was compared. Mean pre-and post-treatment total (30.7 ± 2.7 vs. 23.2 ± 3.7, p p p = 0.001), lubrication (5.5 ± 0.4 vs. 4.5 ± 0.8, p = 0.006), orgasm (5.0 ± 0.6 vs. 3.8 ± 0.7, p = 0.001), satisfaction (5.3 ± 0.6 vs. 3.5 ± 0.9, p pareunia. For SIp’s, BSFI domain scores for level of satisfaction were significantly lower following partner treatment of SIps (3.5 ± 5.2 vs. 2.5 ± 5.2, p = 0.004). Overall, female sexual dysfunction was identified in 9% of patients prior to cancer treatment and 91% (n = 11, p patients and their SIps. While long term effects on sexual dysfunction are still unclear, short-term health care strategies including treatment, counseling, and appropriate referral for cancer patients and their SIps should not be overlooked.

Objectives:Tumor stage,age,and cell type are well-characterized predictors for cervical cancer survival; socioeconomic factors may also play an important role. The purpose of this study is to estimate cervical cancer survival by socioeconomic indicators and race/ethnicity among elderly women diagnosed with cervical cancer. Methods:We studied 1251 women with cervical cancer aged 65 or older,identified between 1992 and 1999 from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results SEER Medicare linked data. All women had similar access to care through Medicare fee-for-services insurance. A composite measure of socioeconomic status was created using census tract level data for poverty,education,and income. Cox proportional hazardmodelingwas used for all-cause and cervical cancer-specific survival analysis. Results:Increased age (p poorer all-cause and cervical cancer-specific survival. After adjustment for age,stage,and treatment,increased co-morbidity scores and having non-squamous cervical cancer were associated with poorer all-cause survival (p pecific survival. Socioeconomic factors were not associated with either all-cause (p for trend = 0.79) or cervical cancer-specific (p for trend = 0.81) survival. No racial/ethnic differences in all-cause or cervical cancer-specific survival were observed after adjusting for socioeconomic factors. Conclusion:Among women with similar access to care,neither minority race/ethnicity nor poorer socioeconomic status were associated with poorer survival in this large sample of older women diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer. presence of co-morbid conditions and treatment were important predictors of cervical cancer survival.

A scenario-based clean diesel production strategy for China National petroleum Corporation

Facing increasingly strict environmental regulations on transportation fuels, China National petroleum Corporation （CNpC）, the second largest supplier of petroleum products in China, needs to upgrade its transportation fuels. Using the scenario-based analysis method, this paper analyzes how the output and emission related properties, including cetane number, and sulfur and aromatics contents of diesel produced by CNpC, will vary with changes in the configuration of diesel production units in the next 5-10 years. The results showed that, to upgrade its diesel, CNpC needs to adjust its diesel pool by decreasing the share of fluid catalytic cracking （FCC） diesel and increasing the shares of hydrocracking （HDC） and hydrotreating （HDT） diesel. Furthermore, to produce ultra-low-sulfur diesel, straight-run diesel as well as poor diesel blendstocks such as FCC diesel and coker diesel should be hydrotreated before being blended into finished diesel. Developing highly efficient HDC and HDT catalysts and corresponding processes is the key to CNpC economically producing more and cleaner diesel.

高硫原油在加工过程中,由于存在非活性硫不断向活性硫转变,由硫引发的各种硫腐蚀就贯穿于炼油的全过程。作为二次加工装置的催化(焦化)柴油加氢精制装置也不例外。几年来多起湿硫化氢腐蚀案例在加氢装置生产实践中显现出来,给装置安全生产带来隐患。笔者根据腐蚀机理和检测结果对这些案例进行了分析,并提出相应的防护措施和看法。
