social system Historical Modeling of Western Economies and its Implications for Eastern Economies

The two purposes of the research are(a)to develop an analytical model that views the economy/polity as a social system with interactive subsystems of actors:households,firms,government,political parties and other significant actors,and(b)apply the analytical model to construct and verify a timeline that figures major events in world development that shaped the evolution of the western economies,and the relative strength of their interacting *** timeline highlights the changing and evolving dominance of the major subsystems in the economic history of the western *** differ from the convention of looking at history as the occurrence of exogenous consequential events and offer instead a system dynamics analysis that makes historical events endogenous and to be affected by the powerplay within the *** current dominance of the firm subsystem in western countries is demonstrated to be the accumulated result of centuries of past events:wars,discoveries,colonies,trade,political enlightenments,and industrial revolutions that strengthened participation and interactions in the firm subsystem at the cost of weakened dominance of rival subsystems(those of traditional households,theocrats,manors,communes,royals,and the modern state subsystem).The behavioral orientation of a social system is explainable in terms of(a)interactive influence(which occurs during the participation and interaction of agents in multiple settings,with some settings having more interactive influence than others),and(b)regulative influence(where the conduct of the one subsystem overrules that of other subsystems).Western economic history suggests a positive conditional correlation and convergence between(a)and(b).Being conditional,the convergence between(a)and(b)may not hold in other world contexts,i.e.,China,India,Arab and African countries.

In recent years we have witnessed a large interest in surface deformation techniques. This has been a reaction that can be attributed to the ability to develop techniques which are detail-preserving. space deformation techniques, on the other hand, received less attention, but nevertheless they have many advantages over surface-based techniques. This paper explores the potential of these two approaches to deformation and discusses the opportunities that the fusion of the two may lead to.

World Governance and Leadership Designs for the Future

An expanding globalization causes global failures, similar to economy failures encountered in the national economic system. Global failures take other forms and are likely to be more severe in the future because of the entry in the world scene of leading countries that have distinctly different economic systems （for instance, China, India） from leading incumbents （Us, EU）, and because the new competition （country cum system） is likely to be perceived by newcomers and incumbents as a zero sum game. It is crucial in such circumstances to have a design of world governance that can respond adequately to global failures. The G-20 is one such design, but this is handicapped by its narrow scope （i.e. GDP） and undemocratic composition （selection of individual countries and not regional representation, next to being inconsistent and out of date）. The paper formulates and applies an index of influence potential that combines population and GDP, and which is measurable at the region and country levels. The paper projects these applications for the near future, comes up with more representative participations by regions/countries in world governance and explores effects of the changing distribution of influence potential on global development and economic systems.

In this paper, we give the state of the art for the so called “mixed spectral elements” for Maxwell＇s equations. several families of elements, such as edge elements and discon-tinuous Galerkin methods （DGM） are presented and discussed. In particular, we show the need of introducing some numerical dissipation terms to avoid spurious modes in these methods. such terms are classical for DGM but their use for edge element methods is novel approach described in this paper. Finally, numerical experiments show the fast and low-cost character of these elements.

Mode of action for inorganic arsenic toxicity and carcinogenesis

Inorganic arsenic(iAs) at high doses is a known human carcinogen, inducing tumors of the skin,urinary bladder, and lung. It is also associated with noncancer toxicities. An understanding of the mode of action(MOA) for arsenic-induced effects is needed to develop a scientifically-based risk assessment. To determine an MOA for iAs induced toxicities, it is necessary to understand the metabolism, kinetics, cell transport, and interaction with specific proteins of iAs. Based on in vitro investigations using animal and human cells, studies from animal models,and clinical and epidemiological studies, we have proposed an MOA involving formation of sufficient levels of reactive trivalent metabolites which interact with critical free sulfhydryl groups, leading to cytotoxicity and regenerative cell proliferation. There is a strong correlation between in vitro cytotoxicity([0.1 lmol/L trivalent arsenicals) and the no effect levels in rodents [approximately 1 ppm(1 ppm = 1 mg/L) of water or diet]. In epithelial target tissues, the cytotoxic effects of iAs result in chronic precursor lesions which have the potential for an increased risk of developing cancer. In non-epithelial tissues, noncancer toxicities such as hypertension and atherosclerosis develop. This MOA implies a non-linear, threshold dose–response relationship for both non-cancer and cancer end points of exposure to iAs.

Electro-acupuncture to prevent prolonged postoperative ileus:A randomized clinical trial

AIM:To examine whether acupuncture can prevent prolonged postoperative ileus(PPOI)after intraperitoneal surgery for colon cancer. METHODs:Ninety patients were recruited from the Fudan University Cancer Hospital,shanghai,China. After surgery,patients were randomized to receive acupuncture(once daily,starting on postoperative day 1, for up to six consecutive days)or usual *** was defined as an inability to pass flatus or have a bowel movement by 96 h after *** main outcomes were time to first flatus,time to first bowel movement, and *** outcomes were quality of life(QOL)measures,including pain, nausea,insomnia,abdominal distension/fullness,and sense of well-being. rEsULTs:No significant differences in PPOI on day 4 (P=0.71)or QOL measures were found between the *** were also no group differences when the data were analyzed by examining those whose PPOI had resolved by day 5(P=0.69)or day 6(P= 0.88).No adverse events related to acupuncture were reported. CONCLUsION:Acupuncture did not prevent PPOI andwas not useful for treating PPOI once it had developed in this population.

Traditional image resizing methods usually work in pixel space and use various saliency *** challenge is to adjust the image shape while trying to preserve important *** this paper we perform image resizing in feature space using the deep layers of a neural network containing rich important semantic *** directly adjust the image feature maps,extracted from a pre-trained classification network,and reconstruct the resized image using neuralnetwork based *** novel approach leverages the hierarchical encoding of the network,and in particular,the high-level discriminative power of its deeper layers,that can recognize semantic regions and objects,thereby allowing maintenance of their aspect *** use of reconstruction from deep features results in less noticeable artifacts than use of imagespace resizing *** evaluate our method on benchmarks,compare it to alternative approaches,and demonstrate its strengths on challenging images.
