A Review of Basic Mechanical Behavior of Laminated Bamboo Lumber

Over the past decade,the physical and mechanical performances of laminated bamboo lumber(LBL)–a bamboo-based structural material,have been extensively studied using experimental,analytical,and numerical *** paper presents a review of existing knowledge in the literature about the mechanical properties of *** paper involved the review of the response of LBL to different types of loading such as tension,bending,compres-sion,and *** on results of the literature reviewed,the strength of LBL parallel to grain was 90–124 MPa with MOE of 10700 MPa in tension,29.55–72.60 MPa,and MOE of 8396–11022 MPa in compression,63.87–128.4 MPa,and MOE of 8320–10912 MPa in bending,and 7.15–17.5 MPa in *** average strength of LBL was similar and in some cases exceeded the average values of bamboo-or wood-based materials,while the variability of its mechanical parameters was *** variability in strength values of LBL was affected by bamboo species,density and thickness of bamboo strips,growth portion,type of treatment,strips arrange-ments,and type of adhesive which in turn calls for classification of LBL by strength grades,degree of hardness,the capability of impregnation and penetration,as well as by areas of application in *** study pro-vided and discussed concluding observations,the current research gap,and future research directions on the mechanical properties of LBL.

Structure-activity relationship in water-gas shift reaction over gold catalysts supported on Y-doped ceria

The utilization of pure hydrogen as an energy source in fuel cells gave rise to renewed interest in developing active and stable water-gas shift catalysts. Gold catalysts have proven to be very efficient for water-gas shift reaction at low temperature. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of:(i) different preparation methods(impregnation and coprecipitation) to obtain a modified ceria support,and(ii) the amount of Y_2 O_3(1.0 wt%, 2.5 wt%, 5.0 wt% and 7.5 wt%) as dopant on the water-gas shift activity of Au/CeO_2 catalysts. An extended characterization by means of S_(BET), XRD, HRTEM/HAADF, FTIR,H_2-TPR and CO-TPR measurements in combination with careful evaluation of the catalyst behavior allowed to shed light on the parameters governing the water-gas shift activity. The catalysts show very high activity(>90% CO conversion) in the temperature range 180-220 ℃,with a slightly better performance of the gold catalysts on supports prepared by impregnation. The decreased activity with increasing Y_2 O_3 concentration is related to the hindering of oxygen mobility due to ordering of surface oxygen vacancies in vicinity of segregated Y^(3+). The effect of catalyst pre-treatments and the stability of the best performing samples were examined as well.

Kidney stone matrix proteins:Role in stone formation

Stone formation is induced by an increased level of urine crystallization promoters and reduced levels of its *** inhibitors include citrate,magnesium,zinc,and organic compounds such as *** the urine,there are various proteins,such as uromodulin(Tamm-Horsfall protein),calgranulin,osteopontin,bikunin,and nephrocalcin,that are present in the stone *** presence of several carboxyl groups in these macromolecules reduces calcium oxalate monohydrate crystal adhesion to the urinary epithelium and could potentially protect against *** are the most abundant component of kidney stone matrix,and their presence may reflect the process of stone *** recent studies have explored the proteomics of urinary *** the stone matrix proteins,the most frequently identified were uromodulin,S100 proteins(calgranulins A and B),osteopontin,and several other proteins typically engaged in inflammation and immune *** normal level and structure of these macromolecules may constitute protection against calcium salt ***,most of them may act as both promoters and inhibitors depending on *** of these proteins have other functions in modulating oxidative stress,immune function,and inflammation that could also influence stone ***,the role of these kidney stone matrix proteins needs to be established through more studies comparing urinary stone proteomics between stone formers and non-stone formers.

Nuclear Localized O-Fucosyltransferase SPY Facilitates PRR5 Proteolysis to Fine-Tune the Pace of Arabidopsis Circadian Clock

Post-translational modifications play essential roles in finely modulating eukaryotic circadian clock *** plants,the effects of O-glycosylation on the circadian clock and the underlying mechanisms remain largely *** O-fucosyltransferase SPINDLY(SPY)and the O-GIcNAc transferase SECRET AGENT(SEC)are two prominent O-glycosylation enzymes in higher plants,with both overlapped and unique functions in plant growth and *** the critical role of O-GIcNAc in regulating the animal circadian clock,here we report that nuclear-localized SPY,but not SEC,specifically modulates the pace of the Arabidopsis circadian *** identifying the interactome of SPY,we identified PSEUDORESPONSE REGULATOR 5(PRR5),one of the core circadian clock components,as a new SPY-interacting ***5 can be O-fucosylated by SPY in pianta,while point mutation in the catalytic domain of SPY abolishes the O-fucosylation of *** protein abundance of PRR5 is strongly increased in spy mutants,while the degradation rate of PRR5 is much reduced,suggesting that PRR5 proteolysis is promoted by SPY-mediated ***,multiple lines of genetic evidence indicate that PRR5 is a major downstream target of SPY to specifically mediate its modulation of the circadian ***,our findings provide novel insights into the specific role of the O-fucosyltransferase activity of SPY in modulating the circadian clock and implicate that O-glycosylation might play an evolutionarily conserved role in modulating the circadian clock system,via O-GIcNAcylation in mammals,but via O-fuco-sylation in higher plants.

Snow damages on trees of an uneven age in mixed broadleaf forests:effects of topographical conditions and tree characteristics

Snow damage on natural stands is an important problem concerning mountainous forest *** the present research,the frequency and intensity of heavy snow damage on natural stands and the relationship of damages with characteristics of trees,stand and topography were studied in mountainous forests of northern Iran.A systematic sampling design was applied to the study area(140 ha),with 122 circular *** grid dimension was100 m and each plot area was 1000 m^*** four types of snow damage to trees include:crown damage(8.6%),stem breakage(5.4%),uprooting(3.2%),and bending(1.4%).The frequency of crown damage grew with an increase inthe diameter at breast height(DBH),while the frequency of stem breakage,uprooting and bending decreased with an increase the *** frequency of crown damage,stem breakage,and total damages was related to tree species(p<0.01).Not all tree species were equally susceptible to snow *** amount of damage grew with increasing elevation and slope angle and decreased with increasing soil *** trees(DBH<25 cm)were more susceptible to snow damage than other *** damage decreased by as the trees in the stand became more mixed in *** susceptibility of trees to snow damage increased by height and slenderness *** adequate silvicultural operation,snow damage can be reduced to a minimum level in these natural forests.

Endotics system vs colonoscopy for the detection of polyps

AIM: To compare the endotics system (ES), a set of new medical equipment for diagnostic colonoscopy, with video-colonoscopy in the detection of polyps. METHODS: Patients with clinical or familial risk of colonic polyps/carcinomas were eligible for this study. After a standard colonic cleaning, detection of polyps by the ES and by video-colonoscopy was performed in each patient on the same day. In each single patient, the assessment of the presence of polyps was performed by two independent endoscopists, who were randomly assigned to evaluate, in a blind fashion, the presence of polyps either by ES or by standard colonoscopy. The frequency of successful procedures (i.e. reaching to the cecum), the time for endoscopy, and the need for sedation were recorded. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of the ES were also calculated. RESULTS: A total of 71 patients (40 men, mean age51.9 ± 12.0 years) were enrolled. The cecum was reached in 81.6% of ES examinations and in 94.3% of colonoscopies (P = 0.03). The average time of endoscopy was 45.1 ± 18.5 and 23.7 ± 7.2 min for the ES and traditional colonoscopy, respectively (P < 0.0001). No patient required sedation during ES examination, compared with 19.7% of patients undergoing colonoscopy (P < 0.0001). The sensitivity and specificity of ES for detecting polyps were 93.3% (95% CI: 68-98) and 100% (95% CI: 76.8-100), respectively. PPV was 100% (95% CI: 76.8-100) and NPV was 97.7% (95% CI: 88-99.9). CONCLUSION: The ES allows the visualization of the entire colonic mucosa in most patients, with good sensitivity/specificity for the detection of lesions and without requiring sedation.

We performed experiments to determine the critical moment for movement initiation of a millimeter bead on a rotating rough *** corresponding critical angular velocities were measured for glass and stainless-steel ball bearings over two different rough surfaces with glued glass beads.A basic theoretical analysis was developed to explain the observed *** the expectation of a simple approach with the presence of the obstacles offered by a rough surface could be sufficient to describe the problem,we prove here that the sole con sideration of these obstacles,and even friction,are insufficient to explain the results in the range of a few-millimeter glass *** the thermodynamic work of adhesion between surfaces is significant,the adhesion forces must be considered in the force balance for particle detachment:.This effect is a determinant for describing theoretically and numerically the dynamics of millimeter particles.

Transcriptional Programs Related to Phytochrome A Function in Arabidopsis Seed Germination

In Arabidopsis seeds, germination is promoted only by phytochromes, principally phytochrome B （phyB） and phytochrome A （phyA）. Despite the abundant information concerning the molecular basis of phyB signaling downstream of PIF1/PIL5, the signaling network inducing germination by phyA is poorly known. Here, we describe the influence of phyA on the transcriptome of Arabidopsis seeds when germination is induced by a far-red （FR） pulse. The expression of 11% of the genome was significantly regulated by phyA. Most of the genes were up-regulated and the changes noted late （i.e. 5 h after a FR pulse）, whereas changes in down-regulated genes were more abundant earlier （i.e. 0.5 h after a FR pulse）. Auxin- and GA-associated elements were overrepresented in the genes that were modified by phyA. A significant number of genes whose expression was affected by phyA had not been previously reported to be dependent on PIL5. Among them, homozygotic mutant seeds of MYB66, a SAUR-like protein, PIN7, and GASA4 showed an impaired promo- tion of germination by phyA. Natural variation at the transcriptional level was found in early signaling and GA metabolic genes, but not in ABA metabolic and expansin genes between Columbia and Landsberg erecta accessions. Although phyA and phyB/PIL5 signaling pathways share some molecular components, our data suggest that phyA signaling is partially independent of PIL5 when germination is promoted by very low fluences of light.

Effects of Freeze-Thaw Cycles on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Glulam Exposed to Outdoor Environment

This paper presents an experimental investigation to identify suitable indices to assess durability of glulam when subjected to freeze-thaw cycles in an exposed *** this study,two types of glulam specimens were tested for their performance when subjected to different levels of aging due to freezing and *** of aging treatment on various parameters including thickness swelling rate,static bending strength,elastic modulus,shear strength,and peeling rate of adhesive layer were *** results showed that freeze-thaw aging treatment did not affect the water-resistance of the specimens as measured by thickness swelling rate and had little effect on the dimensional stability of the ***,the applied aging treatment weakened the bending resistance of the glulam specimens with more pronounced effects on on low-density *** the other hand,bond strength of high-density wood was relatively more affected due to the appliedfreeze-thaw *** highdensity wood,it is suggested that the shear strength of the adhesive layer be taken as an important index to determine the durability of freeze-thaw cycles *** low-density wood,on the other hand,the static bending strength can be used as an index to determine the durability of glulam under freeze-thaw cycles aging.
