Initial joint bleed volume in a delayed on-demand treatment setup correlates with subsequent synovial changes in hemophilic mice

Background: Hemophilic arthropathy is a debilitating morbidity of hemophilia caused by recurrent joint bleeds. We investigated if the joint bleed volume, before initiation of treatment, was linked to the subsequent degree of histopathological changes and the development of bone pathology in a mouse model of hemophilic ***: fvIII knock-out(f8-KO) mice were dosed with a micro-CT blood pool agent prior to induction of hemarthrosis. Eight hours after induction, the bleed volume was quantified with micro computed tomography(micro-CT) and recombinant fvIII treatment initiated. On Day 8, inflammation in the knees was characterized by fluorescence molecular tomography. On Day 14, knee pathology was characterized by micro-CT and histopathology. In a second study, contrast agent was injected into the knee of wild-type(WT) mice, followed by histopathological evaluation on Day ***: The average joint bleed volume before treatment was 3.9 mm3. The inflammation-related fluorescent intensities in the injured knees were significantly increased on Day 8. The injured knees had significantly increased synovitis scores, vessel counts, and areas of hemosiderin compared to un-injured knees. However, no cartilage-or bone pathology was observed. The bleed volume before initiation of treatment correlated with the degree of synovitis and was associated with high fluorescent intensity on Day 8. In f8-KO and WT mice, persistence of contrast agent in the joint elicited morphological ***: When applying a delayed on-demand treatment regimen to hemophilic mice subjected to an induced knee hemarthrosis, the degree of histopathological changes on Day 14 reflected the bleed volume prior to initiation of treatment.

Numerical simulation of non-Darcian flow through a porous medium

This work reports on fluid flow in a fluid-saturated porous medium, accounting for the boundary and inertial effects in the momentum equation. The flow is simulated by Brinkman-forchheimer-extended Darcy formulation （DfB）, using MAC （Marker And Cell） and Chorin pressure iteration method. The method is validated by comparison with analytic results. The effect of Reynolds number, Darcy number, porosity and viscosity ratio on velocity is investigated. As a result, it is found that Darcy number has a decisive influence on pressure as well as velocity, and the effect of.v.scosity ratio on velocity is very strong given the Darcy number. Additional key findings include unreasonable choice of effective viscosity can involve loss of important physical information.

for several centuries,far-field optical microscopy has remained a key instrument in many scientific disciplines,including physical,chemical,and biomedical ***,far-field imaging has many limitations:the spatial resolution is controlled by the diffraction of light,and the imaging speed follows the Nyquist–Shannon sampling *** recent development of super-resolution techniques has pushed the limits of spatial ***,these methods typically require complicated setups and long acquisition times and are still not applicable to deeptissue ***,we report imaging through an ultra-thin fibre probe with a spatial resolution beyond the Abbe limit and a temporal resolution beyond the Nyquist limit simultaneously in a simple and compact *** use the random nature of mode coupling in a multimode fibre,the sparsity constraint and compressive sensing *** new approach of super-resolution endo-microscopy does not use any specific properties of the fluorescent label,such as depletion or stochastic activation of the molecular fluorescent state,and therefore can be used for label-free *** demonstrate a spatial resolution more than 2 times better than the diffraction limit and an imaging speed 20 times faster than the Nyquist *** proposed approach can significantly expand the realm of the application of nanoscopy for bioimaging.

Toward the Design of Multi Asymmetric Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge (ASDBD) Actuators

This paper investigates the electrical and mechanical behaviors of a single-ASDBD actuator and a two-ASDBD one supplied in sinusoidal mode（1-10 kHz）.The main objective of our research is to determine the optimum frequency values for the function of these actuators with a given power *** this purpose,we determine the electrical power density input to the actuators versus frequency through two methods：i） a semi-theoretical method,based on an impedance calculation,and ii） an experimental method,based on direct electrical *** methods show that the addition of a second ASDBD changes the resonance frequency value of the actuator by moving it towards low *** characterizing the aerodynamic mobile layer structure induced by the single-ASDBD actuator,we analyze experimentally the mechanical response of a two-ASDBD actuator as a function of the inter-ASDBD *** experiments demonstrate that the induced electric wind velocity and the electro-mechanical yield of a twoASDBD actuator reach a maximum value for an optimum inter-ASDBD distance,which is a useful value for the design of highly efficient multi-ASDBD actuators.

Methods for recording the time profile of single ultrashort pulses of electron beams and discharge currents in real-time mode

The collectors for measuring the time profile of a current pulse of the runaway electron beam that are generatedunder atmospheric pressure are described. An analysis of changes in pulse shape depending on the bandwidth of theregistration path with a temporal resolution of up to 20 ps was performed. It is shown that the electron beam detectedbehind small-diameter diaphragms has a complex structure, which depends on the parameters of the gas diode. Thereis a design of the current shunts with a temporal resolution of up to 100 ps in this study. Measurement techniques ofvoltage pulses with subnanosecond and nanosecond duration are briefly described.

Influence of Small-Size Contaminations on Thin film Structural Properties

An approach for studying the influence of nano-particles on the structural properties of deposited thin films is proposed. It is based on the molecular dynamic modeling of the deposition process in the presence of contaminating nano-particles. The nano-particle is assumed to be immobile and its interaction with film atoms is described by a spherically symmetric potential. The approach is applied to the investigation of properties of silicon dioxide films. visualization tools are used to investigate the porosity associated with nano-particles. The structure of the film near the nano-particle is studied using the radial distribution function. It is found that fluctuations of film density near the nano-particles are essentially different in the cases of low-energy and high-energy deposition processes.

Structure and properties of brazed joints on dispersion-strengthened copper

Development of the technological process for brazing of heat-resistant copper alloy strengthened with Al2O3 oxide particles is an important task of fabrication of high-temperature application structures. As mechanical properties of the brazed joints directly depend on the structural factor and morphological peculiarities of the brazed seams, the latter are of technological interest in terms of making of permanent joints. This study gives results of X-ray spectral microanalysis of the brazed joints on dispersion-strengthened copper alloy （ Gridcop Al-25 ） produced by using the Ti-Cu system adhesion-active brazing filler alloy, different heat sources and temperature-time parameters of the brazing process. Shown are differences in formation of structure of the seams made by vacuum brazing using radiation and high-frequency heating. vacuum brazing with radiation heating provides the homogeneous seams with crystallisation of the phases based on the CuTi and CuTi2 compounds in the form of discrete faceted particles 2 - 9μm in size against the background of the copper matrix. Based on investigation of structural peculiarities of the brazed seams, the temperature-time conditions of.v.cuum brazing with radiation heating were selected for manufacture of specimens for mechanical tests. Analysis of the results of strength tests of the butt brazed specimens proved the expediency of preliminary heat treatment of the base material, providing strength of the joints at a level of about 92% of that of the base material.

Making a Mechanical Organism Being the fourth in a series of essays on the materials of nature

Most multicellular organisms can be categorised by two words： hierarchy and composite. The underlying fractal geometry of nature - at least in terms of provision of infrastructure - provides much of the hierarchy, although many materials for which infrastructure is not an integral factor are also strongly hierarchical. Plants can therefore be modelled using recursive computer programs which add structures as the size increases. However, problems with mechanical stability also increase as the structure grows, so the plant changes from deriving stiffness from intevaal pressure to cross-linking the cell wall components permanently. However, this compromises the ability of the plant to grow and repair itself.
