Observations of tropical cyclones(TC)from aircraft and in situ platforms provide critical and unique information for analyzing and forecasting TC intensity,structure,track,and their associated *** report,prepared for the tenth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones(IWTC-10),discusses the data collected around the world in TCs over the past four years since the IWTC-9,improvements to observing techniques,new instruments designed to achieve sustained and targeted atmospheric and oceanic observations,and select research results related to these *** the Atlantic and Eastern and Central Pacific basins,changes to operational aircraft reconnaissance are discussed along with several of the research field campaigns that have taken place *** changes in the use and impact of these aircraft observations in numerical weather prediction models are also provided along with updates on some of the experimental aircraft *** from three field campaigns in the Western Pacific basin are also *** of in-situ data collected within recent TCs such as Hurricane Ian(2022),also demonstrate that new,emerging technologies and observation strategies reviewed in this report,definitely have the potential to further improve ocean-atmosphere coupled intensity forecasts.

Minimising the spread of residence-time distribution for flat and heaped powders in a wedge-shaped planar hopper

A wedge-shaped planar mass-flow hopper system was modelled using stress-field theory as found in the literature, The authors present governing equations for stress and velocity fields under a radial- flow assumption in a converging hopper. The velocity in the silo above the hopper is modelled as plug flow, Two set-ups are modelled, one where powder layers in the hopper are assumed to be flat, and the second in which the layers are heaped at some characteristic angle, The ejection times and residence-time distributions are calculated and presented for a range of heap angles. For realistic heap angles, the spread of the residence-time distribution decreases with increasing heap angle; in one case, the spread is halved to a well-defined limit. At this limit （the critical heap angle） the geometry of the hopper can be optimised to minimise the spread of the residence-time distribution, and hence to minimise predicted mixing in the system. We present examples of curves for a variety of parameters that minimise the predicted mixing in the hopper-silo system.

Ignition and combustion of pyrotechnics at low pressures and at temperature extremes

rapid and effective ignition of pyrotechnic countermeasure decoy flares is vitally important to the safety of expensive military platforms such as aircraft. Qineti Q is conducting experimental and theoretical research into pyrotechnic countermeasure decoy flares. A key part of this work is the development and application of improved models to increase the understanding of the ignition processes occurring for these flares. These models have been implemented in a two-dimensional computational model and details are described in this paper. Previous work has conducted experiments and validated the computational model at ambient temperature and pressure. More recently the computational model has been validated at pressures down to that equivalent to 40,000 feet but at ambient temperature(~290 K).This paper describes further experimental work in which the ignition delays of the priming material in inert countermeasure decoy flares were determined for pressures down to 40,000 feet and at temperature extremes of -40℃ and 100℃ Also included in this paper is a comparison of the measured and predicted ignition delays at low pressures and temperature extremes. The agreement between the predicted and measured ignition delays is acceptable.

Quantum Impurity Models with Coupled Cluster Method

We investigate the ground-state properties of the Anderson single impurity model （finite Coulomb impurity repulsion） with the Coupled Cluster Method. We consider different CCM reference states and approximation schemes and make comparison with exact Green＇s function results for the non-interacting model and with Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory for the full interacting model. Our results show that coupled cluster techniques are well suited to quantum impurity problems.

Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） is a complex neurological disor- der characterized by a progressive dementia. The amyloid hypothesis states that pathogenesis is driven by the accumu- lation of amyloid β（Aβ） peptides within the brain （Hardy and Higgins, 1992）, which have multiple effects including activation of glial cells and synapse degeneration. For many years therapeutic strategies were based upon the discovery of compounds that reduced the production of Aβ in vitro and in vivo. However, the amyloid hypothesis is not universally accepted; critics pointed out poor correlations between con- centrations of Aβ in the brain and clinical disease and that, although numerous compounds reduced the production of Aβ in animal models, few had any clinical benefit in AD pa- tients. The failure of Aβ-1owering therapies in translational research has resulted in important modifications of the amy- loid hypothesis.

Visual rating and the use of image analysis for assessing canopy density in a pecan provenance collection during leaf fall

A collection representing the native range of pecan was planted at the US DA-ArS Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut research Station,Byron,*** collection(867 trees)is a valuable genetic resource for characterizing important horticultural *** density during leaf fall is important as the seasonal canopy dynamics provides insights to environmental cues and breeding potential of *** ability of visual raters to estimate canopy density on a subset of the provenance collection(76 trees)as an indicator of leaf shed during autumn along with image analysis values was *** canopy density using the image analysis software was less compared to visual estimates(11.9%vs 18.4%,respectively).At higher canopy densities,the raters overestimated foliage density,but overall agreement between raters and measured values was good(ρc=0.849 to 0.915),and inter-rater reliability was high(r^(2)=0.910 to 0.953).The provenance from Missouri(MOL),the northernmost provenance,had the lowest canopy density in November,and results show that the higher the latitude of the provenance,the lower the canopy *** on regression,the source provenance latitude explained 0.609 of the variation using image analysis,and0.551 to 0.640 when based on the rater estimates of canopy *** assessment of pecan canopy density due to late season leaf fall for comparing pecan genotypes provides accurate and reliable estimates and could be used in future studies of the whole provenance collection.

Extrusion Freeforming of Millimeter-Wave Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) Photonic Crystals

Extrusion freeforming can be used for the rapid prototyping of millimeter-wave electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures. In this work, an alumina-polymer paste with a relatively high volatility solvent (propanol) was used and the characteristics of the ceramic paste, particularly the rheological features are described. The advantage of high volatility solvent is that the viscosity and elastic modulus of the paste are increased sharply as the solvent evaporates. Thus, the rigidity of the extruded filament is quickly increased as a small amount of solvent evaporates. Finally, by employing this procedure, different EBG structures such as 2-D, 3-D woodpile and aperiodic structures were fabricated and their bandgaps were measured. The experimental results show that extrusion freeforming is a relatively simple and easy method to fabricate these woodpile structures with a bandgap in the 90-110 GHz region.

Mission-critical IEC 61850 system architectures are designed to tolerate hardware failures to achieve the highest reliability ***,multi-channel systems are used in such systems within industrial facilities to isolate machinery when there are process ***,multi-channel systems introduce Common Cause Failure(CCF)since the subsystems can rarely be *** paper integrates CCF into the Markov reliability model to enhance the model flexibility to investigate synchronous generator intra-bay SCN architecture reliability performance considering the quality of repairs and *** Markov process enables integration of the impact of CCF factors on system *** case study results indicate that CCF,coupled with imperfect repairs,significantly reduce system reliability *** sensitivity is observed at low levels of CCF,whereas the highest level of impact occurs when the system diagnostic coverage is 99%based on ISO 13849-1,and reduces as the diagnostic coverage level ***,it is concluded that the severity of CCF depends more on system diagnostic coverage level than the repair efficiency,although both factors impact the system overall ***,CCF should be con-sidered in determining the reliability performance of mission-critical communication networks in power distribution centres.

Effects of Nano-Aluminium on The Combustion of A PolyNIMMO-Based Propellant

Propellants containing micro-aluminium particles have been shown to produce faster burn rates than conventional gun ***,they are also more abrasive than conventional ***-material propellants have been reported to give similar benefits to micron-material propellants but without the disadvantage of increased *** were conducted to compare the burn rates,ignitability and wear rates of a propellant loaded with 0% aluminium,15% micro-aluminium and 15%*** vessel tests showed a burn rate increase of 39% in the range 30-250 MPa,and 70% at low pressure(50-100MPa)for the nano-aluminium propellant compared with the baseline *** micro-aluminium propellant showed only a 10%increase in the burn rate compared with the standard *** ignition delay for the nano-aluminium propellant was slightly shorter than that of the baseline *** increased wear rates were measured for the micro-aluminium *** nano-aluminium propellant showed reduced wear rates compared with the micro-aluminium propellant but these were still substantially greater than those for the baseline propellant.
