Tree stand falls: A persistent cause of neurological injury in hunting

AIM: To characterize and compare our current series of patients to prior reports in order to identify any changes in the incidence of neurological injury related to hunting accidents in Rochester, New ***: All tree stand-related injuries referred to our regional trauma center from September 2003 through November 2011 were reviewed. Information was obtained from the hospital's trauma registry and medical records were retrospectively reviewed for data pertaining to the ***: Fifty-four patients were identified. Ninetysix percent of patients were male with a mean age of 47.9 years(range 15-69). The mean Injury Severity Score was 12.53 ± 1.17(range 2-34). The average height of fall was 18.2 feet(range 4-40 feet). All patients fell to the ground with the exception of one who landed on rocks, and many hit the tree or branches on the way down. A reason for the fall was documented in only 13 patients, and included tree stand construction(3), loss of balance(3), falling asleep(3), structural failure(2), safety harness breakage(3) or lightheadedness(1). The most common injuries were spinal fractures(54%), most commonly in the cervical spine(69%), followed by the thoracic(38%) and lumbar(21%) spine. Eight patients required operative repair. Head injuries occurred in 22%. Other systemic injuries include rib/clavicular fractures(47%), pelvic fractures(11%), solid organ injury(23%), and pneumothorax or hemothorax(19%). No patient deaths were reported. The average hospital length of stay was 6.56 ± 1.07 d. Most patients were discharged home without(72%) or with(11%) services and 17% required rehabilitation. CONClUSION: Falls from hunting tree stands are still common, with a high rate of neurological injury. Compared to a decade ago we have made no progress in preventing these neurological injuries, despite an increase in safety advances. Neurosurgeons must continue to advocate for increased safety awareness and participate in leadership roles to improve outcom

Personnel who may have to deal with the uncertain nature and properties of unknown chemicals at an environmental incident, hazardous waste site, industry or in a laboratory need a way to identify the actual risks and hazards they may face. This applies whether the personnel are emergency responders, forensic researchers or waste clean-up crews. There is, however, a quick-check system to identify chemical properties of labeled, unlabeled, unknown or mixed chemicals. The system uses pH paper, starch paper and a source of flame such as a barbeque lighter or Bunsen burner. The basic test takes less than 60 seconds and will identify or verify high-risk properties such as whether substances are oxidizers or reactive to heat, air or water, their range of flammability and their corrosiveness. The test results provide vital information for responders to make critical decisions, whether dealing with a laboratory spill or a full-scale hazardous material emergency. Using hard science helps in dealing with time-critical issues, such as when, or whether, to add water to modify a chemical reaction when a bad situation could turn into a disaster. Whether working with laboratory or industrial chemicals or responding to a major emergency, hard science can provide the information needed to approach the scene, secure the area, and keep unprotected and unauthorized personnel out. It identifies the physical and chemical properties of known, unknown and newly formed substances and allows personnel to assess the risk, hazards and potential scales of impact including when it is safe to respond or take other appropriate action.

Objective and Impact *** is the first longitudinal study investigating the effects of histotripsy on local tumor progression in an in vivo orthotopic,immunocompetent rat hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)*** is the first noninvasive,nonionizing,nonthermal,mechanical ablation technique using ultrasound to generate acoustic cavitation to liquefy the target tissue into acellular debris with millimeter ***,histotripsy has demonstrated in vivo ablation of noncancerous liver ***.N1-S1 HCC tumors were generated in the livers of immunocompetent rats(n=6,control;n=15,treatment).Real-time ultrasound-guided histotripsy was applied to ablate either 100%tumor volume+up to 2 mm margin(n=9,complete treatment)or 50-75%tumor volume(n=6,partial treatment)by delivering 1-2 cycle histotripsy pulses at 100 Hz PRF(pulse repetition frequency)with p−≥30 MPa using a custom 1 MHz *** were monitored weekly using MRI(magnetic resonance imaging)for 3 months or until tumors reached~25 *** revealed effective post-histotripsy reduction of tumor burden with near-complete resorption of the ablated tumor in 14/15(93.3%)treated *** showedken,non-tumoral,fibrous tissue at the treatment site at 3 *** with increased tumor burden(3/6 control and 1 partial treatment)were euthanized early by 2-4 *** 3 other controls,histology revealed fibrous tissue at original tumor site at 3 *** was no evidence of histotripsy-induced off-target tissue *** and partial histotripsy ablation resulted in effective tumor removal for 14/15 rats,with no evidence of local tumor progression or recurrence.

设计了具有高Flory-Huggins相互作用参数的嵌段共聚物聚(对叔丁基苯乙烯)-b-聚(甲基丙烯酸羟乙酯)(PtBS-b-PHEMA),并分别采用阴离子聚合和原子转移自由基聚合(ATRP)方式制备了不同嵌段比例、不同分子量的窄分子量分布的该嵌段共聚物。利用核磁共振分析了嵌段共聚物的组分,利用小角X射线散射(SAXS)分析了嵌段共聚物相分离后的尺寸及结构,对比研究了两种聚合方式对嵌段共聚物性能的影响。结果表明,采用阴离子聚合方式得到的嵌段共聚物分子量分布更窄,相同分子量下发生微相分离的尺寸更小,其在150℃真空烘箱中加热18h后可以形成尺寸为9.96nm的柱状相及8.42nm的层状相。

The syntheses of a library of new chiral aminophenolate bidentate O,N-type ligands HOC6H4(2-R- 4-R′)CH2N(Me)CH(Me)C6H5 [R = R′ = But, 1;R = R′ = Pent, 2;R = But, R′ = Me, 3;R = Me, R′ = But, 4;R = R′ = Me, 5] and tridentate O,N,O-type ligands HOC6H4(2,4-But)CH = NCH(R′′)C6H5 [R′′ = Me, 6;R′′ = CH2OMe, 7] are reported. These ligands were characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H & 13C), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. These ligands serve as chiral auxiliaries for inorganic chemists to design chiral metal-based complexes for asymmetric catalysis and stereoselective polymerization reactions. Three new heteroleptic zinc complexes based on these ligands have been synthesized in moderate yields via a ligand-exchange transamination reaction between homoleptic [Zn(N(SiMe3)2)2] and one equivalent of corresponding ligands to afford [l3ZnN- (SiMe3)2] (3a), [l4ZnN(SiMe3)2] (4a), and [l7ZnN(SiMe3)2] (7a). Solvent-free polymerization of raclactide at 130°C using these zinc compounds yielded atactic polylactides with Mw 10,000 g/mol and narrow polydispersity of 1.3.

To sustain plant growth,development,and crop yield,sucrose must be transported from leaves to distant parts of the plant,such as seeds and *** identify genes that regulate sucrose accumulation and transport in maize(Zea mays),we isolated carbo/iydrafe part/f/ofi/ngf defecf/Ve33(cpd33),a recessive mutant that accumulated excess starch and soluble sugars in mature *** cpd33 mutants also exhibited chlorosis in the leaf blades,greatly diminished plant growth,and reduced ***33 encodes a protein containing multiple C2 domains and transmembrane *** localization experiments showed the CPD33 protein localized to plasmodesmata(PD),the plasma membrane,and the endoplasmic *** also found that a loss-of-function mutant of the CPD33 homolog in Arabidopsis,QUIRkY,had a similar carbohydrate hyperaccumulation *** labeled sucrose transport assays showed that sucrose export was significantly lower in cpd33 mutant leaves relative to wild-type ***,PD transport in the adaxial-abaxial direction was unaffected in cpd33 mutant ***,transmission electron microscopy revealed fewer PD at the companion cell-sieve element interface in mutant phloem tissue,providing a possible explanation for the reduced sucrose export in mutant ***,our results suggest that CPD33 functions to promote symplastic transport into sieve elements.
