While WC_16-Ph_4Sn is a poor catalyst for the polymerization of l-phenyl-butyne (PB) at room temperature, it effectively polymerizes PB in the presence of C_(60), giving high molecular weight polymers in high yields. The polymer is soluble in THF and chloroform and spectroscopic analysis reveals that Coo has copolymerized with PB. Thus, C_(60) plays dual roles of comonomer and cocatalyst in the acetylene polymerization. The copolymers strongly attenuate 532-nm laser pulses, whose limiting performance is superior to that of parent C_(60)

The authors present a case study to demonstrate the possibility of discovering complex and interesting latent structures using hierarchical latent class （HLC） models. A similar effort was made earlier by Zhang （2002）, but that study involved only small applications with 4 or 5 observed variables and no more than 2 latent variables due to the lack of efficient learning algorithms. Significant progress has been made since then on algorithmic research, and it is now possible to learn HLC models with dozens of observed variables. This allows us to demonstrate the benefits of HLC models more convincingly than before. The authors have successfully analyzed the CoIL Challenge 2000 data set using HLC models. The model obtained consists of 22 latent variables, and its structure is intuitively appealing. It is exciting to know that such a large and meaningful latent structure can be automatically inferred from data.

LINEAR AND HYPERBRANCHED POLYMERS WITH HIGH THERMAL STABILITY AND LUMINESCENCE EFFICIENCY

New acetylene monomers, 6-{[(1-naphthylethynyl-4-phenyl)carbonyl]oxy}-1-phenyl-1-hexyne (1), 2,5-diethynyl-thiophene (3), and 4,4'-diethynylbiphenyl (6) were synthesized. Homopolymerization of 1 and copolycyclotrimerizations of 3 and 6 with 1-heptyne and 1-octyne have been achieved with WCl6- and TaCl5-Ph4Sn catalysts, respectively, giving soluble linear disubstituted polyacetylene (2) and hyperbranched polyarylenes (5 and 8) with high molecular weights (up to 1.2 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 98%). The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by R NMR, TGA, UV, photoluminescence (PL), and electroluminescence (EL) analyses. All the polymers possess high thermal stability and emit strong blue light upon photoexcitation. The intensity of the emitted light is greater than that of poly(1-phenyl-1-octyne), a well-known highly luminescent disubstituted polyacetylene. Little aggregation-induced red shift in the PL was observed in the thin films of the polymers. By constructing a multi-layer EL device, high EL quantum yield (0.18%) has been achieved in 2, which are the best results for substituted polyacetylenes attainable so far.

A new liquid crystalline polyacetylene containing a phenyl benzoate mesogen (5) is synthesized,whose mesomorphic properties are found to be easily 'tunab1e' by simple mechanical perturbation. Thepolymerization of 10- [ 4 - (4' -methoxyphenoxycarbonyl )phenoxycarbonyl] - 1 -decyne (4 ) in itiated by theWCl_6-Ph_4Sn/dioxane complex yields polymer 5 with a M_w of 28400. The molecular structure of 5 ischaracterized by NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopy and its liquid crystalline behavior is investigated by DSC,POM, and XRD analysis. Upon mechanical perturbation, 5 exhibits unusual agitation-induced high-strengthdisclinations, shear-induced inversion walls, and solidification-induced banded textures. Such phenomenahave been observed in the main-chain liquid crystalline polymers with rigid backbones, but have seldom beenreported for the side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with flexible backbones, suggesting that the rigidpolyacetylene backbone of 5 plays a constructive role in inducing the novel molecular alignments.

Various extensions of UML have been developed to meet the challenges of designing modern software systems, such as agent based electronic commerce applications. Recent advances in model checking technology have led it to be introduced into the development of approaches and tools to check the correctness of electronic commerce protocols. This paper focuses on the research of a method that connects an extension of AUML to model checker SPIN/Promela for the specification and verification of agent interaction protocols (AIP) in electronic commerce. The method presented here allows us to combine the benefits of visual specification with the power of some static analysis and model checking. Some algorithms and rules are developed to permit all visual modeling constructs translated mechanically into some Promela models of AIP, as supported by the model checker SPIN. Moreover, a process is illustrated to guide the specification and verification of AIP. The method is demonstrated thoroughly using the e commerce protocol NetBill as an example.

Partition property plays a central role in domain decomposition methods. Existing theory essentially assumes certain ellipticity. We prove the partition property for prod lems without ellipticity which are of practical importance. Example applications include implicit schemes applied to degenerate parabolic partial differential equations arising from superconductors, superfluids and liquid crystals. With this partition property, Schwarz algorithms can be applied to general non-elliptic problems with an h-independent optimal convergence rate. Application to the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity is illustrated and numerical results are presented.

Routh stability test is covered in almost all undergraduate control texts. It determines the stability or, a little beyond, the number of unstable roots of a polynomial in terms of the signs of certain entries of the Routh table constructed from the coefficients of the polynomial. The use of the Routh table, as far as the common textbooks show, is only limited to this function. We will show that the Routh table can actually be used to construct an orthonormal basis in the space of strictly proper rational functions with a common stable denominator. This orthonormal basis can then be used for many other purposes, including the computation of the H2 norm, the Hankel singular values and singular vectors, model reduction, H∞ optimization, etc. Keywords Routh stablity criterion - Orthonormal basis - Root-mean-squared value - Hankel operater - Nehari problem - Model reduction This work was supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council.
