We read with great interest the article of Rodriguez et al.,"Which method of distal pancreatectomy is cost-effective among open,laparoscopic,or robotic surgery?"(1).In the current climate of limited hospital sources and control of medical costs,the authors afford the interesting topic of the cost-effectiveness evaluation of the robot-assisted distal pancreatectomy(RDP)in comparison to the laparoscopic(LDP)and open approaches(ODP).To accomplish this purpose,they focused their attention on both the clinical and the economical outcomes of the three different techniques.

Calibration and validation of a simulation model for predicting pedestrian fatalities at unsignalized crosswalks by means of statistical traffic data

This work presents a simulation model for unsignalized crosswalks which takes into account collisions between vehicles and pedestrians,thus allowing to assess the estimated yearly pedestrian *** particular,we focus on a method to calibrate such a model combining measurable crosswalk characteristics,such as maximum speed limit or drivers’compliance,with statistical data for past accidents obtained from local *** order to perform simulations under realistic conditions,we constructed a one-week scenario where pedestrian and vehicle traffic vary using specific patterns each hour of the *** constructed traffic profile is based on openly available data and the suitability for the scenario considered(a crosswalk in Milan,Italy)is investigated showing that cultural/lifestyle elements determine the variation of weekly *** using the constructed one-week scenario were used to obtain the only non-measurable parameter which account for pedestrians’and drivers’*** addition,we also focused on the presence of elderly pedestrians which have different physiological characteristics compared to adults or children and are becoming an important part of the population in several countries around the *** simulation model presented here and the method suggested for calibration may be employed in different contexts,thus allowing to build an important tool to be used not only for transportation efficiency/optimization but also for safety analysis.

Metamicrobiomics in herbivore beetles of the genus Cryptocephalus （Chrysomelidae）： toward the understanding of ecological determinants in insect symbiosis

The Cryptocephalus marginellus （Coleoptera： Chrysomelidae） complex is composed by six species that are supposed to have originated by events of allo- or parapatric speciation. In the present study we investigated the altemative hypotheses that the bacterial communities associated with six populations of this species complex are shaped by environmental factors, or reflect the proposed pattern of speciation. The microbiota associated with the six populations, from five species of the complex, have been characterized through 16S rRNA pyrotag sequencing. Based on a 97% sequence similarity threshold, data were clustered into 381 OTUs, which were analyzed using a variety of diversity indices. The microbiota of C. acquitanus and C. marginellus （Calanques） were the most diverse （over 100 OTUs）, while that from C. zoiai yielded less bacterial diversity （45 OTUs）. Taxonomic assignment revealed Proteobacteria, Tenericutes and Firmicutes as the dominant components of these beetles＇ microbiota. The most abtmdant genera were Ralstonia, Sphingomonas, Rickettsia, and Pseudomonas. Different strains of Rickettsia were detected in C. eridani and C. renatae. The analysis of β-diversity revealed high OTU turnover among the populations of C. marginellus complex, with only few shared species. Hierarchical clustering taking into account relative abundances of OTUs does not match the phylogeny of the beetles, therefore we hypothesize that factors other than phylogenetic constraints play a role in shaping the insects＇ microbiota. Environmental factors that could potentially affect the composition of bacterial communities were tested by fitting them on the results of a multi-dimensional scaling analysis. No significant correlations were observed towards the geographic distances or the host plants, while the composition of the microbiota appeared associated with altitude. Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory disease of the pancreas which can lead to a systemic inflammatory response syndrome with significant morbidity and mortality in 20% of patients. Gallstones and alcohol consumption are the most frequent causes of pancreatitis in adults. The treatment of mild acute pancreatitis is conservative and supportive; however severe episodes characterized by necrosis of the pancreatic tissue may require surgical intervention. Advanced understanding of the pathology, and increased interest in assessment of disease severity are the cornerstones of future management strategies of this complex and heterogeneous disease in the 21st century.

Interspecies variation in DNA damage induced by pollution

The choice of a suitable species to translate pollution signals into a quantitative monitor is a fundamental step in biomonitoring plans. Here we present the results of three years of biomonitoring at a new coal power plant in central Italy using three different aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species in order to compare their reliability as sentinel organisms for genotoxicity. The comet assay was applied to the common land snail Helix spp., the lagoon fish Aphaniusfasciatus, and the green frog Rana esculenta sampled in the area potentially exposed to the impact of the power station. The tissue concentration of some expected pollutants （As, Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr） was analysed in parallel samples collected in the same sampling sites. The three species showed different values in the comet assay （Tail Intensity） and different accumulation profiles of heavy metals. Aphanius fasciatus showed an increasing genotoxic effect over time that paralleled the temporal increase of the heavy metals, especially arsenic, and the highest correlation between heavy metals and DNA damage. Helix spp. showed levels of damage inversely related to the distance from the source of pollution and in partial accordance with the total accumulation of trace elements. On the contrary, Rana esculenta showed a low capability to accumulate metals and had inconsistent results in the comet test. The fish appeared to be the most efficient and sensitive species in detecting chemical pollution. Overall, both the fish and the snail reflected a trend of increasing pollution in the area surrounding the power plant across time and space [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 308-321, 2014].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis(PCI) is a rare condition that may be associated with a variety of *** presenting clinical picture may be very heterogeneous and represent a challenge for the *** the present paper we describe both a common and an uncommon clinical presentation of PCI and review the pertaining *** cases confirm that,apart from asymptomatic cases,the clinical presentation of PCI may be widely different and suggest that a new onset of stipsis might be the presenting *** might be suggested by a simple X-ray of the digestive tract showing a change in the characteristics of the intestinal wall in two-thirds of these ***,one third of the patients do not have a suggestive X-ray and require a computed tomography(CT) scan/nuclear magnetic resonance that may reveal a thickened bowel wall containing gas to confirm the diagnosis and distinguish PCI from intraluminal air or submucosal *** also allows the detection of additional findings that may suggest an underlying,potentially worrisome cause of PCI such as bowel wall thickening,altered contrast mucosal enhancement,dilated bowel,soft tissue stranding,ascites and the presence of portal *** results also point out that clinicians and endoscopists should be aware of the possible presentations of PCI in order to correctly manage the patients affected with this disease and avoid unnecessary *** increasing number of colonoscopies performed for colon cancer screening makes PCI more frequently casually encountered and/or provoked,therefore the possible endoscopic appearances of this disease should be well known by endoscopists.
