Surface runoff and soil erosion in a natural regeneration area of the brazilian Cerrado

The brazilian Cerrado has been converted to farmland,and there is little evidence that this expansion will decrease,mainly because agriculture is the country's main economic ***,the impacts of intense modification of land use and land cover on surface runoff and soil erosion are still poorly un-derstood in this ***,we assessed surface runoff and soil loss in a woodland Cerrado area under a former pasture area,which was abandoned and has undergone a natural regeneration process for 7 years(RC).Its results were compared with that found in an undisturbed area of woodland Cerrado(CE),40-month-old eucalyptus(3.0×1.8 m)(EU),and pasture under rotational grazing(pA).The study was conducted on Red Acrisol located in the brazilian *** performed rainfall simulations on a plot of 0.7 m2 and using three constant rainfall intensities of 60,90,and 120 mm h-1 for 1 *** each rainfall intensity,we carried out four repetitions using different plots in each treatment,i.e.12 plots per treat-ment studied and 48 plots in *** noted that the soil physical properties were improved in RC and,consequently,water infiltration and soil erosion control;RC presented surface runoff and soil loss different from EU and pA(a=0.05).The macroporosity and soil bulk density affected surface runoff in RC and pA because the RC was used as pasture and is currently regenerating back to the cerrado *** the rainfall intensity increased,EU became more similar to pA,which showed the highest surface runoff and soil *** findings indicate that natural regeneration processes(pasture to the cerrado vegetation)tend to improve the soil ecosystem services,improving infiltration and reducing surface runoff and soil erosion.

External beam radiotherapy(RT)is a leading first-line therapy for prostate cancer(pCa),and,in recent years,significant advances have been ***,RT resistance can arise and result in long-term recurrence or disease progression in the worst-case ***,making crucial the discovery of new targets for pCa ***,we generated a radioresistant pCa cell line,and found p53 to be highly expressed in radioresistant pCa cells,as well as in pCa patients with recurrent/disease progression submitted to *** dissection revealed that RT could promote p53 expression via epigenetic ***,a decrease of H3K27me3 occupancy at Tp53 gene promoter,due to increased KDM6b activity,was observed in radioresistant pCa ***,p53 is essential for efficient DNA damage signaling response and cell recovery upon stress induction by prolonged fractionated ***,KDM6b inhibition by GSK-J4 significantly decreased p53 expression,consequently attenuating the radioresistant phenotype of pCa cells and hampering in vivo 3D tumor ***,this work contributes to improve the understanding of p53 as a mediator of signaling transduction in DNA damage repair,as well as the impact of epigenetic targeting for pCa radiosensitization.

A brief review on suspended-core fibers for sensing applications is presented. A historical overview over the previous ten years about this special designed microstructure optical fiber is described. This fiber presents attractive optical properties for chemical/biological or gas measurement, but it can be further explored for alternative sensing solutions, namely, in-fiber interferometers based on the suspended-core or suspended-multi-core fiber, for physical parameter monitoring.

Supercapacitors(SCs) are high-power energy storage devices with ultra-fast charge/discharge *** using concentrated aqueous-based electrolytes can work at low temperatures due to their intrinsic properties, such as higher freezing point depression(FpD) and robustness. besides the traditional organic-and aqueous-based(salt-in-water) electrolytes used in SCs, water-in-salt(WISE) sodium perchlorate electrolytes offer high FpD, non-flammability, and low-toxicity conditions, allowing the fabrication of safer, environmentally friendly, and more robust devices. For the first time, this work reports a comprehensive study regarding WISE system’s charge-storage capabilities and physicochemical properties under low-temperature conditions(T porous carbon-based electrodes. The effect of temperature reduction on the electrolyte viscosity and electrical properties was investigated using different techniques and the in-situ(or operando) Raman spectroscopy under dynamic polarization *** cell voltage, equivalent series resistance, and specific capacitance were investigated as a function of the temperature. The cell voltage(U) increased ~ 50%, while the specific capacitance decreased ~20%when the temperature was reduced from 25 ℃ to -10 ℃. As a result, the maximum specific energy(E = CU^(2)/2) increased ~ 100%. Therefore, low-temperature WISEs are promising candidates to improve the energy-storage characteristics in SCs.

Assessment of Vulnerability of Oxisols to Compaction in the Cerrado Region of brazil

The Cerrado region of brazil,one of the fastest-growing agricultural areas in the world,is undergoing very rapid mechanization;this development is good for the country's economy but may also snowball into substantial loss of agricultural land and other environmental degradation if the soil susceptibility and vulnerability to compaction is not well *** this study we explored different techniques for estimating soil intrinsic abilities to withstand applied pressure using the prevalent Oxisols of the Cerrado region under native *** samples were collected from three sites within the region and subjected to 1) compressibility test;2) manual penetration resistance test;3) automated penetration resistance test;and 4) packing density *** four methods produced analogous *** results showed the significant influence of soil structure on the inherent strength and compaction susceptibility of the *** also established the association of soil structure with the mineralogy of the *** is noteworthy that the packing density which was developed from very simple and easily obtained parameters could give a picture of the tendency of the soil to ***,this approach would be useful in developing compaction susceptibility maps for the *** could be concluded that most of the Oxisols in the Cerrado region would support mechanized agricultural production very ***,there is need for careful management of the mechanization process to avert *** management techniques should include conservationist practices such as no till in order to maintain as much as possible the favorable structure and drainage of these very old soils.

Coating independent cytotoxicity of citrate-and pEG-coated silver nanoparticles on a human hepatoma cell line

The antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles（AgNps） resulted in their increasing incorporation into consumer,industrial and biomedical ***,human and environmental exposure to AgNps（either as an engineered product or a contaminant）supports the emergent research on the features conferring them different toxicity *** this study,30 ran AgNps coated with citrate or poly（ethylene glycol）（pEG） were used to assess the influence of coating on the effects produced on a human hepatoma cell line（HepG2）,namely in terms of viability,apoptosis,apoptotic related genes,cell cycle and cyclins gene *** types of coated AgNps decreased cell proliferation and viability with a similar toxicity *** the concentrations used（11 and 5 μg/mL corresponding to IC50 and-IC10 levels,respectively） the amount of cells undergoing apoptosis was not significant and the apoptotic related genes bCL2（anti-apoptotic gene）and bAX（pro-apoptotic gene） were both ***,both AgNps affected HepG2 cell cycle progression at the higher concentration（11 μg/mL） by increasing the percentage of cells in S（synthesis phase） and G2（Gap 2 phase） *** the cell-cycle related genes,the expression of cyclin b1 and cyclin E1 genes were ***,this work has shown that citrate- and pEG-coated AgNps impact on HepG2 apoptotic gene expression,cell cycle dynamics and cyclin regulation in a similar *** research is needed to determine the properties that confer AgNps at lower toxicity,since their use has proved helpful in several industrial and biomedical contexts.
