Living on the edge: morphological and behavioral adaptations to a marginal high-elevation habitat in an arboreal mammal

Habitats are characterized by different local environmental conditions that inﬂuence both behavior and morphology of species,which can result in habitat-dependent phenotypic differences among animals living in heterogeneous *** studied 3 alpine populations of Eurasian red squirrels(Sciurus vulgaris),1 living in a marginal high-elevation habitat at the edge of the species’altitudinal distribution,and 2 occurring in higher-quality ***,we investigated whether squirrels living in the marginal area differed in 2 morphological parameters(body size and body mass)and/or in the expression of 4 personality traits estimated with an openﬁeld test and a mirror image stimulation test(activity,exploration,activity-exploration,and social tendency).Furthermore,we tested whether within-individual variance of the traits(behavioral plasticity)was higher in the edge *** squirrels in the edge habitat were smaller and weighed less than in the other study areas,while among females,size–habitat relationships were less *** sex-speciﬁc patterns were explained by a strong association between body mass and reproductive success in female *** in the marginal habitat were more active,explorative,and had a more social personality than in the other ***,in contrast to our predictions,behavioral plasticity was smaller in the marginal habitat,but only for the trait *** results suggest that animals choose the habitat that bestﬁts their personality,and that habitat-related differences in selective pressures may shape animals’morphology.

Background:There is a dearth of mortality data on systemic sclerosis(SSc)in sub-Saharan *** undertook a retrospective study of causes and predictors of death in low-income indigent South Africans with ***:A retrospective records review of clinicodemographic,laboratory,and outcome data of SSc patients attending a state-funded tertiary Rheumatology service in South ***:Most of the 164 patients were Black(92.7%)and female(87.8%).The mean(SD)age at diagnosis and follow-up duration were 42.6(12.9)and 5.5(5.6)years,*** majority(75.6%)had diffuse cutaneous SSc(dcSSc);and digital pits/ulcers,interstitial lung disease(ILD),and pulmonary hypertension(PH)were documented in 73.6%,55.0%,and 38.3%,*** were 56 known deaths and an equal number of patients were lost to *** resulted from ILD complicated by PH(42.9%),infections(8.9%),cardiac disease(7.1%),and malignancies(3.6%).Estimated 5-and 10-year survival rates for patients with known outcomes were 58%and 42%,*** predictors of death were renal dysfunction and cor ***:Most patients in this study of South Africans had dcSSc and poor *** deaths resulted from cardiorespiratory complications of ILD complicated by *** pulmonale and renal dysfunction were independent predictors of death.

In the last decades,a significant increase in the incidence of diabetic kidney disease(DKD)was observed concomitant with rising diabetes mellitus(DM)*** disease associated with DM in children and adolescents is represented by persistent albuminuria,arterial hypertension,progressive decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate to end-stage renal disease and increased cardiovascular and all-cause morbidity and mortality of these *** medical practice,the common and still the“gold standard”marker for prediction and detection of diabetic kidney involvement in pediatric diabetes is represented by microalbuminuria screening even if it has low specificity to detect early stages of *** are some known limitations in albuminuria value as a predictor biomarker for DKD,as not all diabetic children with microalbuminuria or macroalbuminuria will develop end-stage renal *** tubular damage occurs before the glomerular injury,tubular biomarkers are superior to the glomerular ***,they may serve for early detection of DKD in both type 1 DM and type 2 *** and new biomarkers to identify diabetic children and adolescents at risk of renal complications at an early stage as well as renoprotective strategies are necessary to delay the progression of kidney disease to end-stage kidney *** biomarkers and therapeutic strategies are discussed as timely diagnosis and therapy are critical in the pediatric diabetic population.

In this paper we present the Reproducible Research Publication Workflow(RRPW)as an example of how generic canonical workflows can be applied to a specific *** RRPW includes essential steps between submission and final publication of the manuscript and the research artefacts(i.e.,data,code,etc.)that underlie the scholarly claims in the manuscript.A key aspect of the RRPW is the inclusion of artefact review and metadata creation as part of the publication *** paper discusses a formalized technical structure around a set of canonical steps which helps codify and standardize the process for researchers,curators,and *** proposed application of canonical workflows can help achieve the goals of improved transparency and reproducibility,increase FAIR compliance of all research artefacts at all steps,and facilitate better exchange of annotated and machine-readable metadata.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)remains the third most prevalent cancer disease and involves a multi-step process in which intestinal cells acquire malignant *** is well established that the appearance of distal metastasis in CRC patients is the cause of a poor prognosis and treatment ***,in the last decades,CRC aggressiveness and progression have been attributed to a specific cell population called CRC stem cells(CCSC)with features like tumor initiation capacity,self-renewal capacity,and acquired multidrug *** data highlight the concept of this cell subtype as a plastic entity that has a dynamic status and can be originated from different types of cells through genetic and epigenetic *** alterations are modulated by complex and dynamic crosstalk with environmental factors by paracrine *** is known that in the tumor niche,different cell types,structures,and biomolecules coexist and interact with cancer cells favoring cancer growth and ***,these components constitute the tumor microenvironment(TME).Most recently,researchers have also deepened the influence of the complex variety of microorganisms that inhabit the intestinal mucosa,collectively known as gut microbiota,on *** TME and microorganisms participate in inflammatory processes that can drive the initiation and evolution of *** in the last decade,crucial advances have been made concerning to the synergistic interaction among the TME and gut microorganisms that condition the identity of CCSC,the data exposed in this review could provide valuable insights into the biology of CRC and the development of new targeted therapies.

There are prototypes of social housing massively built in contrasting climatic conditions,generating thermal comfort needs that are difficult to satisfy by the users *** of indoor air volume in living spaces where the use of air conditioning and natural ventilation strategies provides elements to improve thermal comfort *** research shows the thermal performance located in a representative social housing according to Mexico’s National Housing *** temperature results from a benchmark case were compared to six Virtual Evaluation Models,using the Dynamic Thermal Simulation tool Design Builder®from the perspective of *** main objective was to determine the minimum use of active systems with different indoor air volumes and improve comfort conditions to promote sustainable living in social *** analysis was conducted under an adaptive comfort range according to three different climate conditions in Mexico adopting a Numerical Theoretical *** main findings can be divided into two parts:a)the impact of the indoor air volume on thermal performance was evidenced in a proportion of time in three representative climates of the central region of Mexico,and b)no relationship was found between indoor air volume and thermal comfort in sub-humid cold climate;in sub-humid temperate climate,the same number of comfort hours was found in two different models,and in sub-humid warm climate,an inversely proportional relationship was found between indoor air volume and the comfort *** findings implies a greater knowledge relative to what we know about sub-humid cold,temperate and warm climates.

Crystal structure evolution of complex metal aluminum hydrides upon hydrogen release

Complex aluminum hydrides have been widely studied as potential hydrogen storage materials but also,for some time now, for electrochemical applications. This review summarizes the crystal structures of alkali and alkaline earth aluminum hydrides and correlates structure properties with physical and chemical properties of the hydride compounds. The crystal structures of the alkali metal aluminum hydrides change significantly during the stepwise dehydrogenation. The general pathway follows a transformation of structures built of isolated [AlH4]- tetrahedra to structures built of isolated [Al H6]3- *** crystal structure relations in the group of alkaline earth metal aluminum hydrides are much more complicated than those of the alkali metal aluminum hydrides. The structures of the alkaline earth metal aluminum hydrides consist of isolated tetrahedra but the intermediate structures exhibit chains of cornershared octahedra. The coordination numbers within the alkali metal group increase with cation sizes which goes along with an increase of the decomposition temperatures of the primary hydrides. Alkaline earth metal hydrides have higher coordination numbers but decompose at slightly lower temperatures than their alkali metal counterparts. The decomposition pathways of alkaline metal aluminum hydrides have not been studied in all cases and require future research.
