In the last decade, the world of academia has faced a period of strong/severe resource constraints/reduction. At the same time, there has been an increasing interest of the Ministry of Research （MIUR） in designing methods to evaluate University performance in order to rank efficient Universities and to reduce potential inefficiencies, so providing the administration authorities with measures that may be used for an optimal resources allocation. With this increasing interest in University performance, a wide academic debate has emerged about the models and measures adopted, based on several quantitative measures of inputs that, sometimes, have been borrowed from the Italian Health organizational model, much more consolidated in its experience. We cite, for all, the students evaluation in terms of standard cost within the resources allocation model introduced last year, and the ＂customers＂ satisfaction measurement, whose main goal is to provide an independent system of regular evaluation of student satisfaction and of the University teaching quality. The aim of this paper is to deal with the students opinion about the quality of teaching, as perceived as ＂users＂ while attending their academic courses in the health area. We agree with the statement that the high quality of healthcare services provided to the community depends also on the main factor, the human capital involved in supplying them. In Italy, the academic courses belonging to the health area provide the access to a limited number of students who passed a hard selection. This rule was introduced by the law n.264/1999 to harmonize the Italian University system to the European one in order to guarantee the high quality of students higher education in this field. Ammonia and greenhouse gas distribution in a dairy barn during warm periods

This research aimed to quantify concentrations of ammonia(NH3),carbon dioxide(CO_(2))and methane(CH_(4)),estimate emissions,and analyze the factors influencing them during warm periods in an open dairy barn equipped with two cooling systems in a Mediterranean climate *** distribution within the barn was observed to vary both vertically and horizontally,with the highest gas concentrations observed in the central area of the ***_(3),CH_(4)and CO_(2)ranged in 1.7–7.4,7–18,560–724μg·g^(–1),*** ventilation through openings and the operation of cooling systems induced changes in indoor microclimate conditions,influencing cow behavior and,consequently,gas *** concentrations were the highest at air velocities below 0.5 m·s^(–1).The highest concentration of NH_(3)was observed when the temperature-humidity index(THI)was>72 and≤78;and CO_(2)and CH_(4)concentrations were the highest with THI≥72 and decreased with THI≤***_(3)concentrations when barn management included three daily milkings were higher than those measured when barn management was based on two daily milkings,and lower for CH_(4)and CO_(2).NH_(3)and CH_(4)emissions were the highest during barn cleaning,while the lowest NH_(3)emissions occurred during activity of the cows(i.e.,feeding,walking).

Reproductive patterns in Araucaria araucana forests in the Andean range, Chile

Background Araucaria araucana is a mast species that presents a high variability in annual cone production. Researchers have recorded synchronization events in cone production in different populations, which allows the seed production to be concentrated, reducing the percentage of seeds consumed by different animal *** We sampled three populations located in the Andes Mountains, Araucanía Region, Chile. In 2004 we began the collection of data on cone production, for which we installed permanent plots（1200 m2each） at each location. We identified and labeled each female tree in each plot to monitor its cone production. In 2012 we selected a total of 30 trees near the plots to evaluate the number of seeds per cone. In each February from 2012 to 2014 we selected two mature cones and covered them with a porous mesh for subsequent collection and storage in March. At the beginning of June, we counted and weighed the seeds, determining the average weight, the number of seeds per cone, the germination capacity（GC）, and the germination speed（GS）.Results Cone production was synchronous across the three locations. We observed significant differences among the locations and years evaluated. The cones had fewer seeds in 2013（high production） compared to those in 2012（low production）, but their weights were similar. In 2014 the cones produced smaller seeds in fewer quantities. The difference between the years 2013 and 2014 resulted from the high-energy expenditure in 2013. Regarding GC and GS, there were significant differences among the three locations（GC: F = 45.41, p < 0.01; GS: F = 96.08, p < 0.01）, where the highest values were observed in *** Both GC and GS are related to seed weight but not to the number of cones produced in a given year. The Effect of Water and Salt Stress on Paspalum dilatatum, a Constituent of Pampas Natural Grasslands

The effects of the salt stress on plant growth are usually increased by the water stress. We studied the impact of both stresses in simultaneous pulses of drought and salinity on Paspalum dilatatum. This forage species is native to South America, spread in grasslands in many tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas of the world, and very common in grasslands of the Flooding Pampas of Argentina. Mimicking what happens in nature. We compared a pot experiment, a non-stressed control against water stress for a month (midpoint between field capacity and wilting point), and two saline stresses (moderate, 6 dSm-1 and strong, 12 dSm-1), also for a month. Aerial biomass (green leaf; non-leaf green material, and dry material) and roots were harvested, weighed, and analyzed for nitrogen, phosphorus, and cations. The biomass of all components significantly decreased when both stresses were applied. Water plus strong saline stress reduced by half the total biomasses, compared to the control. The proportion of aerial biomass/root biomass ratio as well as aerial green component/dry materials ratio tend to decrease when subjected to both stresses. Nitrogen concentration in plants was not significantly affected, but phosphorus concentration increased in aerial biomass components, from 0.10 to 0.18 mgkg-1 between the extreme treatments, but did not change in roots. Sodium concentration in plants increased (i.e., in green leave sodium (Na) increased from 0.27 to 2.01 mgkg-1 between the extreme treatments), whereas other cations either did not change or decreased, affecting the ratios between them. Sodium performance allows us to infer that the Na accumulation of P. dilatatum behaves in an intermediate range, compared to very tolerant to salts or non-salt tolerant species of the Paspalum genus.
