Modification of tubular chitosan-based peripheral nerve implants: applications for simple or more complex approaches

Surgical treatment of peripheral nerve injuries is still a major challenge in human *** to now,none of the well-developed microsurgical treatment options is able to guarantee a complete restoration of nerve *** restriction is also effective for novel clinically approved artificial nerve *** this review,we compare surgical repair techniques primarily for digital nerve injuries reported with relatively high prevalence to be valuable attempts in clinical digital nerve repair and point out their advantages and *** furthermore discuss the use of artificial nerve grafts with a focus on chitosan-based nerve guides,for which our own studies contributed to their approval for clinical *** the second part of this review,very recent future perspectives for the enhancement of tubular(commonly hollow)nerve guides are discussed in terms of their clinical translatability and ability to form three-dimensional constructs that biomimick the natural nerve *** includes materials that have already shown their beneficial potential in in vivo studies like fibrous intraluminal guidance structures,hydrogels,growth factors,and approaches of cell ***,we highlight upcoming future perspectives comprising co-application of stem cell *** our overview,we conclude that already simple attempts are highly effective to increase the regeneration supporting properties of nerve guides in experimental *** for bringing nerve repair with bioartificial nerve grafts to the next level,*** of defects>3 cm in human patients,more complex intraluminal guidance structures such as innovatively manufactured hydrogels and likely supplementation of stem cells or their secretome for therapeutic purposes may represent promising future perspectives.

For a decade,sorafenib remained the only drug approved for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)due to the failure of several phase III trials in which alternative angiogenesis inhibitors were tested(1).In recent years,the field of systemic treatments of HCC has evolved quickly and a recent position paper of the European Association for the Study of the Liver has well described the current advances in the systemic treatment of advanced HCC as well as the unmet needs in the field(1).First,lenvatinib was approved as an alternative to sorafenib in the first-line setting,and,thus,regorafenib,cabozantinib and ramucirumab as second-line treatments for patients who progressed on sorafenib(1).

The catalytic oxidative cou pling of methane(OCM)to C_(2) hydrocarbons(C_(2)H_(6) and C_(2)H_(4))represents one of the most effective ways to convert natural gas to more useful products,which can be performed effectively using La_(0.6)Sr0.4Co_(0.2)Fe_(0.8)O_(3-δ)(LSCF)perovskite hollow fiber membrane *** this work,the effects of adding a thin BaCe_(0.8)Gd_(0.2)O_(3-δ)(BCG)catalyst film onto the inner LSCF fiber surface as the OCM catalyst and a porous Ba0.5Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)(BSCF)perovskite layer onto the outer LSCF surface to improve the oxygen permeation were *** 700℃and 1000℃,methane conversion increased in the order of uncoated,BCG and BSCF-coated,and BCG-coated LSCF hollow fiber while Coselectivity and C_(2)-yield increased in the order of BCG and BSCF-coated,uncoated,and BCG-coated LSCF hollow *** permeation flux at the same temperature range,on the other hand,was enhanced in the order of uncoated,BCG-coated,and BCG and BSCF-coated LSCF hollow *** finding demonstrates the complex interplay between oxygen permeation and OCM *** BCG and BSCFcoated hollow fiber was also subjected to thermal cycles between 850℃and 900℃for up to 175 hours during which the fiber showed minor degradation in oxygen permeation fluxes and relatively stable OCM performance.

Global prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and of NAFLD-hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is estimated to grow in the next *** burden of NAFLD and the evidence that NAFLD-HCC arises also in noncirrhotic patients,explain the urgent need of a better characterization of the molecular mechanisms involved in NAFLD *** and diabetes cause a chronic inflammatory state which favors changes in serum cytokines and adipokines,an increase in oxidative stress,DNA damage,and the activation of multiple signaling pathways involved in cell ***,a role in promoting NAFLD-HCC has been highlighted in the innate and adaptive immune system,dysbiosis,and alterations in bile acids *** dietary,genetic,or combined mouse models have been used to study nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)development and its progression to HCC,but models that fully recapitulate the biological and prognostic features of human NASH are still *** humans,four single nucleotide polymorphisms(PNPLA3,TM6SF2,GCKR,and MBOAT7)have been linked to the development of both NASH and HCC in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients,whereas HSD17B13 polymorphism has a protective *** addition,higher rates of somatic ACVR2A mutations and a novel mutational signature have been recently discovered in NASH-HCC *** knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis of NAFLD-HCC will be helpful to personalized screening programs and allow for primary and secondary chemopreventive treatments for NAFLD patients who are more likely to progress to HCC.

Gastric cancer remains the third leading cause of mortality from cancer worldwide and carries a poor prognosis,due largely to late *** importance of the interaction between Helicobacter pylori(***)infection,the main risk factor,and host-related genetic factors has been studied intensively in recent *** genetic predisposition for non-hereditary gastric cancer is difficult to assess,as neither the real prevalence of premalignant gastric lesions in various populations nor the environmental risk factors for cancer progression are clearly *** non-cardiac intestinal-type cancer,identifying the factors that modulate the progression from inflammation toward cancer is crucial in order to develop preventive *** role of cytokines and their gene variants has been questioned in regard to non-self-limiting *** gastritis and its evolution to gastric atrophy and intestinal metaplasia;the literature now includes various and non-conclusive results on this *** influence of the majority of cytokine single nucleotide polymorphisms has been investigated for gastric cancer but not for preneoplastic gastric *** the investigated gene variants onlyIL10T-819C,IL-8-251,IL-18RAP917997,IL-22 rs1179251,IL1-B-511,IL1-B-3954,IL4R-398 and IL1RN were identified as predictors for premalignant gastric lesions *** of the most important limiting factors is the inhomogeneity of the studies(e.g.,the lack of data on concomitant *** infection,methods used to assess preneoplastic lesions,and source population).Testing the modifying effect of *** infection upon the relationship between cytokine gene variants and premalignant gastric lesions,or even testing the interaction between *** and cytokine gene variants in multivariable models adjusted for potential covariates,could increase generalizability of results.

Aims Light requirements for cactus seed germination have been considered to be associated with their adult plant height and seed mass,but this has not been thoroughly studied for other succulent *** order to understand seed photosensitivity from desert species belonging to Asparagaceae(subfamily Agavoideae)and Cactaceae,we performed a germination experiment with and without light for 12 species and 2 varieties from 1 species from the Southern Chihuahuan *** also determined if adult growth is totally determined by seedling‘growth form’in *** We performed a germination experiment using light and darkness for 13 species from Southern Chihuahuan Desert:10 rosette species(Asparagaceae),as well as 1 globose,1 columnar and 2 varieties from 1 depressed-globose species(Cactaceae).The response variables were seed germination percentage and relative light germination(RLG).In addition,in order to determine if adult-globose cacti could have cylindrical seedlings,we calculated the shape index(height/width ratio)for Coryphanta clavata and Mammillaria *** Findings All species were considered neutral *** species had similar seed germination in both light and dark conditions,and three taxa(*** and the two varieties of Ferocactus latispinus)showed higher germination with light than without *** salmiana,*** and the two varieties of *** had higher RLG than the other *** mass was an important factor because with higher seed mass there was lower dependence to *** findings support the hypothesis that small seed mass and light requirements have coevolved as an adaptation to ensure *** adult-globose cactus species,***,and one adult-columnar species,***,had small seeds and neutral *** from these two species exposed to light were cylindrical and those under darkness conditions were *** seeds from this species are able to germinate in

The clinical decision to control risk factors for cardiovascular disease （CVD） in the elderly takes the followings into consideration：（1） the elderly life expectancy; （2） the elderly biological age and functional capacity; （3） the role of cardiovascular disease in the elderly group; （4） the prevalence of risk factors in the elderly; and （5） The effectiveness of treatment of risk factors in the elderly. A large number of studies showed the efficacy of secondary and primary prevention of dyslipidemia in the elderly. However, the only trial that included patients over 80 years was the Heart Protection Study （HPS）. Statins are considered the first line therapy for lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol （LDL-C）. Because lifestyle changes are very difficult to achieve, doctors in general tend to prescribe many drugs to control cardiovascular risk factors. However, healthy food consumption remains a cornerstone in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention and should be implemented by everyone.

Evolution of radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer along the last two decades: single institution experience

Background： The radical hysterectomy （RH） surgical technique has improved along the years. It is used for the treatment of cervical cancer, endometrial cancer when affecting the cervix, and upper vaginal carcinomas. Our aim was to describe the historical evolution of the technique after the introduction of laparoseopy at our institution. Methods： We performed a retrospective review of medical records of patients who underwent RH, grouped in three periods according to the year of surgery： 1990-1999, 2000-2009 and 2010-2013. Patients＇ characteristics, pathologic details, intraoperative and postoperative complications were analyzed and comoared throughout the time periods. Results： A total of 102 cases of RH were performed at our center during the study period. Among all data collected, the presence of necrosis, age, number of lymph nodes, surgery route, operating time, hospital stay, blood loss and transfusion requirement were statistically significant different among groups. Conversion to laparotomy rate was 19% for the second period compared to the absence of cases in the last one. No significant differences （P=0.124） were observed in the adjuvant treatment received among the three different groups. At the time of the last contact the patients free of disease were 12 （85.7%）, 53 （91.3%） and 26 （86.6%） respectively （P=0.406）. Regarding the disease-free interval, we found significant better outcomes in the group of laparotomy compared to laparoscopy （P=0.015）.Conclusions： Laparoscopic RH is an acceptable surgery with advantages like magnified vision of the operation＇s field, lower surgical complications, shorter hospital stay and earlier resumption to daily activities.

Season of birth influences on breastfeeding incidence and duration

Recent research suggests that an individual’s season of birth can influence his or her health,educational,professional,and behavioral outcomes[1-10].The consumption of breastmilk in infancy is also believed to be correlated with these *** existing studies identify breastfeeding seasonality patterns in developing nations[11-14].However,existing studies do not examine if seasonal differences in breastfeeding exist in the United *** whether or not the season of birth affects one’s breastfeeding likelihood is the first step in recognizing whether breastfeeding seasonality may contribute to the correlation between one’s season of birth and his or her outcomes.
