Microbial electrosynthesis of acetate from CO_(2)in three-chamber cells with gas diffusion biocathode under moderate saline conditions

The industrial adoption of microbial electrosynthesis(MES)is hindered by high overpotentials deriving from low electrolyte conductivity and inefficient cell *** this study,a mixed microbial consortium originating from an anaerobic digester operated under saline conditions(∼13 g L^(−1)NaCl)was adapted for acetate production from bicarbonate in galvanostatic(0.25 mA cm^(−2))H-type cells at 5,10,15,or 20 g L^(−1)NaCl *** acetogenic communities were successfully enriched only at 5 and 10 g L^(−1)NaCl,revealing an inhibitory threshold of about 6 g L^(−1)Na^(+).The enriched planktonic communities were then used as inoculum for 3D printed,three-chamber cells equipped with a gas diffusion *** cells were fed with CO_(2)gas and operated galvanostatically(0.25 or 1.00 mA cm^(−2)).The highest production rate of 55.4 g m^(−2) d^(−1)(0.89 g L^(−1)d^(−1)),with 82.4%Coulombic efficiency,was obtained at 5 g L^(−1)NaCl concentration and 1 mA cm^(−2)applied current,achieving an average acetate production of 44.7 kg MWh−*** electron microscopy and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis confirmed the formation of a cathodic biofilm dominated by Acetobacterium ***,three 3D printed cells were hydraulically connected in series to simulate an MES stack,achieving three-fold production rates than with the single cell at 0.25 mA cm^(−2).This confirms that three-chamber MES cells are an efficient and scalable technology for CO_(2)bio-electro recycling to acetate and that moderate saline conditions(5 g L^(−1)NaCl)can help reduce their power demand while preserving the activity of acetogens.

Determination of the Antioxidant, Phytochemical and Antibacterial Profiles of Flowers from Selected Ornamental Plants in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines

With the increasing interest on natural products discovery, utilization of plant parts which are commonly disregarded is another breakthrough. This study sought to determine the secondary metabolites present, phenolic contents, radical scavenging activities and antibacterial properties of 10 selected ornamental flowers which were Adenium obesum, Allamanda cathartica, Bougainvillea glabra, Catharanthus roseus, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Heliconia subulata, Ixora coccinea, Mussaenda philippica, Tecoma stans and Torenia fournieri, from Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. The ethanolic crude extracts were subjected to thin layer chromatography （TLC） phytochemical screening. Total phenolics expressed as mg AAE/g sample were determined through Folin-Ciocalteu method. Radical scavenging activities were measured using DPPH assay. Antibacterial activities were assessed through TLC bioautography. To quantify bacterial susceptibility of C. pulcherrima, MIC and MBC were employed in the ethyl acetate sub-fraction. TLC showed different types of phenolics, alkaloids, essential oils and terpenes. T. fournieri showed the highest total phenolics with 155 mg AAE/g while H. subulatahad showed the lowest with 3.50 mg AAE/g. Measurement of IC59 showed that H. subulata had the highest antioxidant activity followed by T. fournieri with 303 ppm and 320 ppm, respectively. H. subulata having the least amount of total phenolics had greatest radical scavenging activity. This indicates that other than phenolics, other metabolites can pose great antioxidant activities. The antibacterial testing showed that M. philippica, 1. coccinea, 1-1. subulata, C. pulcherrima and A. cathartica were bioactive against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coll. MIC and MBC of C. pulcherrima ethyl acetate sub-fraction is within the range of 2.5-10 mg/mL.

Prevalence and Drug-Resistance Patterns of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Shigella Species among Children with Diarrhea in Merida City, Mexico

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shigella are two of the leading causes of diarrhea among children in developing countries. The prevalence of ETEC and Shigella species resistant to antimicrobial agents is increasing. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of ETEC and Shigella species among under-five children with diarrhea in an urban region of southeastern Mexico. A cross-sectional study was conducted among under-five children with acute diarrhea from January 2013 to January 2014 at Merida city. Isolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility test of ETEC and Shigella species were performed using standard bacteriological protocols. Of 200 stool samples collected, 18 (9.0%) ETEC and 12 (6.0%) Shigella strains were isolated. Among 12 Shigella species Shigellaflexneri founded as 8 (66.7%), followed by Shigellaboydii 4 (33.3%). One hundred percent of ETEC and Shigella isolates showed resistance to ampicillin, carbenicillin and cephalothin. Also, high frequency of resistance for both ETEC and Shigella isolates was observed to nitrofurantoin (100%, 83.3%), respectively. However, when we analyzed the resistance patterns of Shigella by species, S. boydii showed more resistance (8 of 12 antimicrobials tested) in comparison to S. flexneri isolates. Multidrug resistance (MDR) (≥3 drugs) was observed among all ETEC and Shigella isolates, being the aminoglycosides the more effective drugs against these pathogens. In conclusion, these findings indicate that ETEC and Shigella spp. are important etiological agents of diarrhea among under-five children and a high rate of drug resistance, including MDR, to the commonly used drugs was observed in our region.

Background:?Malaria remains a public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa especially in pregnant women because of the potential risk to the life of the mother and risk of transmission to the foetus. Treatment of malaria imposes a great economic burden on households, governments, and ultimately slows down the pace of economic development in these countries. Methods:?This study estimates the economic burden of malaria among pregnant women in Nigeria, using a cross sectional survey, conducted in 8 public health institutions from the three senatorial districts of Rivers State. The data was collected from a sample of 1008 pregnant women visiting antenatal clinics using the open data kit (ODK) pretested questionnaires by trained personnel. Results:?The results show that malaria has a direct economic burden of about N5826.21 or 16.18 United States Dollar (USD) for outpatient treatment including diagnostic tests and about N18,271 or 50.75?USD using an exchange rate of N360:1?USD, for inpatient treatment. A significant statistical association was established between malaria diagnosis and socio-economic status of participants (p-value Conclusion:?Though the intangible cost could not be identified, the study has shown that malaria imposes huge economic burden on households especially poor households. There is need for government to intensify its efforts in malaria eradication schemes. Efforts should be made to put in place a free malaria treatment policy for vulnerable groups like pregnant women. Furthermore, involvement of health systems in reducing the cost of treatment will decrease the economic burden on the households.

Introduction: Malaria is a febrile illness caused by the Plasmodium species. The mangrove swamp forest vegetation and high annual rainfall characteristic of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria encourage all year round transmission of malaria. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and speciation of Plasmodium parasitaemia among pregnant women in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Methodology: Cross-sectional study carried out in three states of the Niger Delta region;Akwa-Ibom, Delta and Rivers between April and June 2019. Study Sites were chosen by stratified random sampling. Demographic information was collected using pretested interviewer-administered questionnaires via the Open Data Kit application on android mobile phones. Diagnosis was by rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and Microscopy. Ethical approval and informed consent were obtained. Data was analyzed using the SPSS v25 software. Chi-square statistic and Fischer’s exact test were used to compare data, all at a 95% confidence interval and significance level of 0.05. Results: Two thousand, eight hundred and twenty (2820) pregnant women were studied;948, 992 and 880 from Akwa-Ibom, Delta and Rivers respectively. Overall prevalence of parasitaemia using RDT and Microscopy was 6.8% and 6.7% respectively. All except 1% of malaria was attributed to falciparum species. The other species were plasmodium ovale and plasmodium malariae. Conclusion: The prevalence of Plasmodium parasitaemia among pregnant women in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria has reduced considerably, giving credence to the malaria preventive strategies applied in antenatal care. When properly stored and used as recommended, malaria RDTs compare favorably with microscopy;therefore, no case of malaria should be missed due to a facility’s incapability to carry out microscopic diagnosis.
