Impact on dietary intake of a self-directed, gender-tailored diabetes prevention program in men

AIMTo investigate changes in dietary intake following a 6-mo randomised controlled trial of the self-directed, gender-tailored type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) Prevention Using LifeStyle education (PULSe) program in men. MeTHODSMen aged 18-65 years, with a body mass index (BMI) 25-40 kg/m2, and at high risk for developing T2DM were recruited from the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. eligible participants were randomised into one of two groups: (1) waitlist control; or (2) PULSe intervention. Dietary intake was assessed at baseline and immediately post-program using the Australian eating Survey food frequency questionnaire and diet quality measured using the Australian Recommended Food Score (ARFS). ReSULTSOne hundred and one participants (n = 48, control; n = 53, intervention, mean age 52.3 ± 9.7 years, BMI of 32.6 ± 3.3 kg/m2) commenced the study. Following the active phase, differences between groups were observed for proportion of total energy consumed from healthful (core) foods (+7.6%eI, P energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods (-7.6%eI, P et quality (ARFS) (+4.3, P = 0.004), including sub-scales for fruit (+1.1, P = 0.03), meat (+0.9, P = 0.004) and non-meat protein (+0.5, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONThe PULSe prevention program’s nutrition messages led to significant improvements in dietary intake in men at risk of T2DM.

Advancing the Disaster and Development Paradigm

Consolidation of disaster and development studies as an integrated field of action research that influences policy has proved to be fundamental to global disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, climate change, and humanitarian agreements. However, challenges in achieving targets, such as those of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, requires further advances of the disaster and development paradigm underpinning these aspirations. This article presents perspectives that grew primarily from local action research, particularly research carried out with marginalized and highly at-risk groups of people in Southern Africa and South *** fronts from these findings emphasize disaster and development risk assessment opportunities that consolidate earlier ideas and extend understanding of disaster and development-related risk intervention options. These acknowledge severe shortcomings in disaster risk reduction progress while including greater use of hope as an active ingredient. This process of paradigm exploration remains fundamental to achieving disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, and associated policy objectives. The analysis presented here reiterates earlier groundings in people-centric perspectives, emphasizing social relations and systems of meaning as essential active ingredients for challenging power structures, technology, education, and human behavior. The analysis proposes some consequent thematic fronts for increased investment. These includeinvesting in early buildup of well-being before a disaster,better living with uncertainty, and overcoming the barriers to desired disaster and development outcomes. The article is intended to contribute to an ever-evolving paradigm of disaster and development risk that requires impetus from personal and collective values beyond calculations of disaster and development.

Biomechanics associated with tibial stress fracture in runners:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Disturbance cue communication is shaped by emitter diet and receiver background risk in Trinidadian guppies

In animal communication systems,individuals that detect a cue(i.e.,“receivers”)are often influenced by characteristics of the cue *** instance,in many species,receivers avoid chemical cues that are released by emitters experiencing *** chemical“disturbance cues”appear to benefit receivers by warning them about nearby danger,such as a predator’s *** the active ingredients in disturbance cues have been largely unexplored,by-products of metabolized protein are thought to play a role for some *** so,the content(quality)and volume(quantity)of the emitter’s diet should affect their disturbance cues,thus altering how receivers perceive the cues and *** Poecilia reticulata are a species known to discriminate among disturbance cues from different types of donors,but dietary variation has yet to be *** this study,we found evidence that diet quality and quantity can affect disturbance cues released by guppy emitters(i.e.,experimental“donors”).Receivers discriminated between donor cue treatments,responding more strongly to cues from donors fed a protein-rich bloodworm diet(experiment 1),as well as an overall larger diet(experiment 2).We also found that receivers exposed to higher background risk were more sensitive to disturbance cue variation,with the strongest avoidance responses displayed by high-risk receivers toward disturbance cues from donors fed the high-quality ***,diet,and perhaps protein specifically,affects either the concentration or composition of disturbance cues released by *** variation may be important in information signaling in social species like the guppy.

Artificial intelligence and remote sensing for spatial prediction of daily air temperature:case study of Souss watershed of Morocco

Air temperature(Tair)is a fundamental variable in climate research and climate impact *** field observations do not accurately capture its spatial distribution due to the sparse and uneven distribution of weather stations,especially in remote areas where the local variability is *** circumvent this problem,in this study,remote sensing and weather station data were used to estimate Tair in the Souss watershed in *** statistical methods,including linear regression and partial least squares(PLS),and four machine learning algorithms,namely k-nearest neighbors,random forest(RF),extreme gradient boost,and Cubist,were used for modeling and predicting Tair and its performance were evaluated using random subsets and *** resolution imaging spectroradiometer predictors,including Terra band 32 emissivity,Terra nighttime land surface temperature,Terra local time of night observation,Aqua band 31 emissivity,Aqua daytime land surface tempera-ture,and Aqua nighttime land surface temperature(ALSTN),and auxiliary inputs,including sky-view,elevation,slope,and hillshade,were used as inputs for *** results showed that the Cubist and RF were the most accurate models(RMSe=2.09°C and 2.13°C,R2=0.91 and 0.90,respectively),while PLS had the lowest predictive power(RMSe=2.71°C;R2=0.83).The overall performance of the models for estimating Tair in the study area was generally satisfac-tory,with RMSe limited to less than 3°C for all ***,the station data reliability was still an issue,with only four of the seven stations marked by complete meteorological data.

Background:Bird nests are an important part of avian *** are a powerful tool for studying not only the birds that built them,but a wide array of topics ranging from parasitology,urbanisation and climate change to *** this,bird nests tend to be underrepresented in natural history collections,a problem that should be redressed through renewed focus by collecting ***:Here we outline the history and current best practice collection and curatorial methods for the nest col-lection of the Australian National Wildlife Collection(ANWC).We also describe an experiment conducted on nests in the ANWC using ultrasonic humidification to restore the shape of nests damaged by inappropriate ***:The experiment showed that damaged nests can be successfully reshaped to close to their original ***,restored nests were significantly closer to their original shape than they were prior to ***,even nests damaged by years of neglect may be fully incorporated into active research *** practice techniques include extensive note taking and photography in the field,subsampling of nests that cannot or should not be collected,appropriate field storage,metadata management,and prompt treatment upon arrival at the collec-tion ***:Renewed focus on nest collections should include appropriate care and restoration of current col-lections,as well as expansion to redress past *** could include collaboration with researchers studying or monitoring avian nesting ecology,and nest collection after use in bird species that rebuild anew each nesting *** expansion of museum nest collections will allow researchers and natural history collections to fully realise the scientific potential of these complex and beautiful specimens.

energy conservation is paramount for small mammals because of their small size,large surface area to volume ratio,and the resultant high heat loss to the *** survive on limited food resources and to fuel their expensive metabolism during activity,many small mammals employ daily torpor to reduce energy expenditure during the rest *** hypothesized that a small terrestrial semelparous marsupial,the brown antechinus Antechinus stuartii,would maximize activity when foraging conditions were favorable to gain fat reserves before their intense breeding period,but would increase torpor use when conditions were poor to conserve these fat *** antechinus were trapped and implanted with small temperature-sensitive radio transmitters to record body temperature and to quantify torpor expression and activity patterns in the *** antechinus used torpor at least once per day over the entire study *** daily torpor use increased and mean daily body temperature decreased significantly with a reduction in minimum ambient ***,antechinus employed less torpor on days with more rain and decreasing barometric *** contrast to torpor expression,activity was directly related to ambient temperature and inversely related to barometric *** results reveal that antechinus use a flexible combination of physiology and behavior that can be adjusted to manage their energy budget according to weather variables.

Climate Change, Water Scarcity, and Health Adaptation in Southwestern Coastal Bangladesh

Climate change may affect human health through multiple and interactive pathways that include safe water scarcity. However, impacts of climate change-induced water scarcity on health and well-being are *** 80% of illnesses in developing countries are attributed to unsafe drinking water and waterborne diseases. In Southwestern Bangladesh, lack of safe drinking water is a severe crisis due to climate change. The study investigated the impacts of climate change on water resources and human health in a coastal area. A questionnaire survey was carried out in two villages of Shymnagar upazila on the southwestern coast to investigate the present status of safe water sources and health care facilities and their impacts on the local community. The results show that the local community believes that climate change is having substantial impacts on freshwater sources and health. More than 70% of the respondents identified diarrhea, dysentery,and skin diseases as the prime waterborne health risks that occur through climate-related safe water scarcity. By synthesizing the ground data, we suggest pathways to health adaptation to climate change effects and safe water scarcitythrough locally available adaptive practices such as the use of pond sand filters, rainwater harvesting, and importing potable water with the active participation of the government,nongovernmental organizations, and communities.

Modelling the brittle rock failure by the quaternion-based bonded-particle model in DeM

This paper presents an investigation of brittle rock failure by the quaternion-based bonded-particle model in discrete element method(DeM).Unlike traditional approaches that utilize euler angles or rotation matrices,this model employs unit quaternions to represent the spatial rotations of *** method simplifies the rep-resentation of 3D rotations,providing a more intuitive framework for modelling complex interactions in granular *** numerical model was validated by the uniaxial compression tests on rock,with good agreement with well-documented experimental data in terms of the rock uniaxial compression strength(UCS)and failure *** loading,the rock sample demonstrated a linear-elastic response at an axial strain of smaller than 0.45%.However,as internal bond breakage accumulated,this linear relationship weakened,and the stress-strain curve began to deviate from its initial linear *** bond breakage and the overall deformation of the rock were primarily controlled by the shear bonding *** UCS was achieved at an axial strain of 0.625%,at which point the internal shear bonding force chains were predominantly aligned *** brittle failure occurred when the internal damage of solids nucleated to form an interconnected failure plane,accompanied by a sharp rise in the internal damage *** area of failure plane increased with the loading strain rate,gradually transforming the failure pattern from the local damage to a complete fragmentation.

Legacy earthen berms influence vegetation and hydrologic complexity in the Altar Valley,Arizona

Across the American Southwest water development has played a critical role in managing *** berms have been constructed throughout US rangelands to manage runoff and reduce *** berms altered runoff patterns to increase soil moisture with positive local vegetative ***,altered runoff patterns can be considered a disturbance that affects broader scale vegetation *** hypothesized that the hydrologic impacts of earthen berms in semiarid rangelands will be reflected in contrasting upslope and downslope vegetation patterns.A supervised classification of grass,shrubs,and bare soil was performed using orthographic imagery taken in June 2016 to quantify the effects of 181 earthen berms in the uplands and floodplain of the Altar Valley in Southern Arizona,*** berms blocked runoff,creating downslope runoff"shadows"within which the precipitation is the dominant water *** documented more bare soil downslope of intact berms in comparison with *** and shrub cover affected by berms were related to soil *** and shrub cover were not different above and below intact berms on fine textured soils,but on sites with coarser textured soil,grass cover was lower downslope of *** breaches occurred on coarser textured soils,the up and downslope differences in grass cover *** study points to the role of conservation structures in adding additional complexity to already heterogeneous landscapes by creating patchwork assemblages of vegetation and bare soil proximal to earthen runoff and erosion control berms.
