Teaching reproductive endocrinology in Iran: Pilot assessment of hospital-based clinical modules for medical students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences

This pilot study evaluated effectiveness and acceptance of a new hospital-based reproductive endocrinology curriculum among Iranian medical students. A voluntary, anonymous questionnaire was used to compare two teaching methods as applied to junior medical students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Students were randomly assigned to one of two clinical teaching settings;no student experienced both modules. Coursework for the pilot (experimental) group (n = 19) utilized a teaching approach comprising lectures, genetics laboratory, pelvic ultrasound, small group sessions, and opportunities to observe advanced reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization, ICSI, and embryo transfer. A control group (n = 34) received reproductive endocrinology instruction by the ‘traditional curriculum’, consisting mainly of lectures. Students were sampled at baseline and again atthe conclusion of their reproductive endocrinology session. Pre- and post-test data were analyzed for both groups;post-test differences between groups were also compared. No significant differences in mean age or gender mix were identified between the two study groups. Overall, the ques- tionnaire did not identify any significant intergroup differences for any parameter investigated. Although student acceptance rate appeared similar for both educational modules, the ratio of students having a “favorable regard” for reproductive medicine declined only among students randomized to the control group (41.2% vs. 32.3%). This report offers the first data on teaching reproductive endocrinology to medical students in Iran. Both traditional and innovative approaches to teaching reproductive endocrinology were well-accepted by students, although negative post-test responses were more common among students in the control group. Nitrogen Derivatives of Irrigation in Chihuahua＇s Parks with Wastewater Treatment Residuals

Since 2000 Chihuahua City has distribution system Waste Water Treatment （WTR）, watering city＇s green areas. The need to cover the growing demand for drinking water has encouraged the use of non-potable water where water quality is not an issue despite being used by 10 years ago, it is not known whether nitrogen compounds derived from WTR pose risks to the environment and public health. Therefore, in order to minimize health and environmental risks, this is needed to assess the impact and policy support for water use. The aim of this study is to determine the constitution and the concentration of nitrogen compounds through selection and characterization of park＇s representative. It＇s divided into physical properties and main parameters that affect nitrogen transformations. It was determined that sand was material that allowed more favorable oxidation and reduction of nitrate in soil and atmosphere, opposite of the clay, When used WTR, nitrates, nitrites and ammonia nitrogen were identified in the subsurface and NOx and N20 were identified in the atmosphere. When drinking water was used, none of these compounds was found. However, it was determined that despite having high concentrations of nitrates, the WTR was within the limits allowed by the Mexican standard for the use of WTR in public places.

前言加工助剂对硬质聚氯乙烯塑料的流变行为和熔融行为有极大的影响。所以,认识助剂对熔融、粘性和弹性性质以及加工材料的最终性能方面的作用,这对于聚氯乙烯塑料的发展是至为重要的。已经证实,用毛细管式流入压力损耗的流变学方法能够表征出聚氯乙烯树脂和塑料的熔融范围。只要适当选择毛细管口径、温度和剪切速率,可以将流入压力损耗基本上归因于熔体弹性的变化。随着熔融的增加,熔体弹性也增加。这进一步表明,用这种方法所测得的弹性响应是与处于熔融压力下聚氯乙烯树脂的颗粒结构的复杂形态变化有关。

Leveraging Geospatial Technology for Smallholder Farmer Credit Scoring

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), there are about 500 million smallholder farmers in the world, and in developing countries, such farmers produce about 80% of the food consumed there;their farming activities are therefore critical to the economies of their countries and to the global food security. However, these farmers face the challenges of limited access to credit, often due to the fact that many of them farm on unregistered land that cannot be offered as collateral to lending institutions;but even when they are on registered land, the fear of losing such land that they should default on loan payments often prevents them from applying for farm credit;and even if they apply, they still get disadvantaged by low credit scores (a measure of creditworthiness). The result is that they are often unable to use optimal farm inputs such as fertilizer and good seeds among others. This depresses their yields, and in turn, has negative implications for the food security in their communities, and in the world, hence making it difficult for the UN to achieve its sustainable goal no.2 (no hunger). This study aimed to demonstrate how geospatial technology can be used to leverage farm credit scoring for the benefit of smallholder farmers. A survey was conducted within the study area to identify the smallholder farms and farmers. A sample of surveyed farmers was then subjected to credit scoring by machine learning. In the first instance, the traditional financial data approach was used and the results showed that over 40% of the farmers could not qualify for credit. When non-financial geospatial data, i.e. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was introduced into the scoring model, the number of farmers not qualifying for credit reduced significantly to 24%. Assessing Localized Contamination Hazard and Groundwater Quality Challenges in Water-Stressed Peri-Urban Accra, Ghana

The study assesses the quality of hand dug wells in relation to distance from soakaway septic tanks in three selected peri-urban communities in the Ga West Municipality near Accra, Ghana. Water quality analyses of bio-physico-chemical variables (pH, Temperature, eC, turbidity, DO, BOD, TSS, TDS, sodium, potassium, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, sulphate, chloride, salinity, total alkalinity, total coliform, fecal coliforms and isolation of e. coli) were determined. Concentrations of the major nutrient anion sulphate, nitrate, phosphate, and chlorides in water samples at distances between 0 - 30 m radial distances from the septic tank were above the WHO permissible limit of drinking water compared to the control. All the water samples had high fecal and total coliform counts that exceeded the international standard of 0 per 100 mL of potable water with counts ranging from 0 - 143 cfu/100 ml and 53 - 463/100 ml for FC and TC respectively. High fecal coliform and detection of E. coli in most samples is an indication of fecal pollution possibly from their close proximity to soak away septic sewage. Synthesis of Substituted Benzothiazepine Compounds with Medicinal Potential

A versatile synthetic approach toward a series of benzothiazepines with medicinal potential (for example, compound 1) that allows incorporation of structural variation at the three aromatic regions of the structure, and at the sulfur atom, was developed. Knoevenagel condensation of indan-1,3-diones with benzaldehydes, yielded 2-benzylidineindan-1,3-diones, which undewent thio-Michael addition and intramolecular imine formation upon reaction with 2-aminothiophenols, to produce the target benzothiazepines. Use of indan-1,3-diones, benzaldehydes or 2-aminothiophenols bearing further substitution enabled production of novel 5,11-dihydro-12H-benzo[b]indeno [1,2-e][1,4]thiazepin-12-one analogs 1 - 14, including compounds bearing substitution at novel positions within the scaffold.
