AIM:To assess the efficacy and safety of ranitidine bismuth citrate plus clarithromycin given for 1 wk in Brazilian patients with peptic ulcer. METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with peptic ulcer were randomized in two treatment groups: (1)1-wk regimen consisting of ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg b.i.d. with clarithromycin 500 mg b.i.d. or (2) 2-wk regimen of the same treatment. Eradication of the infection was considered when both the histologic examination and the urease test were negative for the infection 3 mo after treatment. RESULTS: By intention to treat analysis, Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) was eradicated in 73% and 76% of patients, respectively treated for 1 or 2 wk (P>0.05). By per protocol analysis, the eradication rates were 80% and 83%, respectively, in patients treated for 1 or 2 wk (P>0.05). Nine patients (8.2%) reported minor side effects. CONCLUSION: One-week therapy with ranitidine bismuth citrate and clarithromycin is safe, well tolerated and effective for treatment of H pylori infection, and appears to be comparable to the 2-wk regimen in terms of efficacy.x

Episcleral brachytherapy as an effective alternative in vasoproliferative tumors

The aim of this study is to assess the results of episcleral brachytherapy as treatment of retinal vasoproliferative tumors(RVTs) in a referral Intraocular Tumors Unit(ITU). A retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with vasoproliferative tumors of the retina and treated with episcleral brachytherapy in the ITU, University Hospital of Valladolid between 2009 and 2015 was done. Five patients accomplished the inclusion criteria. All of them presented associated exudation and secondary retinal detachments(RD). Four patients had received prior treatments. Decreased tumor size and exudation regression was found in all cases after treatment. Visual acuity remained stable or increased in all patients. No recurrences have been found after twelve-months follow up. The results of the present study suggest that episcleral brachytherapy is an efficient and safe option in the management of vasoproliferative tumors, especially when large tumor or extensive subretinal fluid is present. In these cases episcleral brachytherapy could be considered as a first line treatment.

Structural and Optical Characterization of Indium Zinc Oxynitride Thin Films

Indium zinc oxynitride (IZON) thin films were deposited on Si(100) substrates by RF reactive magnetron sputtering at different substrate temperature to study their structural and optical properties. All the films were deposited in a reactive atmosphere of nitrogen and argon. As precursor material, an IZO target (In 2 O 3 -ZnO, 90-10 wt%) with a purity of 99.99% was used. The crystalline structure of the films was analyzed by X-Ray diffraction technique (XRD), the deposited IZON thin films were practically amorphous with some polycrystalline contents for the films deposited at 100 °C and 300 °C. The refractive index and the extinction coefficient had been obtained from Spectral Ellipsometry (SE) analyses using the Classical and Adachi models, both results were qualitatively and quantitatively approximate. These optical results were analyzed and used to propose roughness values of the films surface, through of an appropriate proposal of the structure of the films. The roughness values obtained from optical models were compared with the morphological results studied by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and the roughness values, obtained by direct and indirect measure, were consistent between them. The incorporated nitrogen reduced the typical crystallization of IZO and favored the deposition of transparent thin films with very flat surfaces, these results shows that the IZON has an ideal amorphous material for applications as conductive oxynitride layers.
