OBJECTIVE: To verify the action of non-pharmacological interventions, whole body vibration exercise (WBVE) and auriculotherapy (AT) on the management of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) analyzing the handgrip strength (HS). METHODS: One hundred twelve participants with KOA were allocated in (a) WBVE group with peak-to-peak displacement of 2.5 to 7.5 mm, frequency from 5 up to 14 Hz, acceleration peak from 0.12 up to 2.95 g (2 d/weekly for 5 weeks),(b) AT group, points of both ears (Kidney, Knee-correspondent point and Shenmen) were stimulated with seeds,(c) WBVE + AT group and (d) respective control groups. HS was assessed in all the participants, in acute and cumulative responses. rESULTS: The intervention with WBVE alone and combined with AT improved (P response, the HS. CONCLUSION: WBVE alone or combined with AT might promote biological effects that interfere with the HS in individuals with KOA.

Multiple sclerosis(MS)is a complex chronic disease of the central nervous system(CNS)which includes three main anatomopathological characteristics:inflammation,demyelination,*** pathology induces many clinical symptoms,depending on the site of the lesions,such as motor,sensitive,visual,urinary and cognitive *** addition,MS is a very heterogeneous disease that displays different clinical courses or phenotypes(relapsing/remitting MS,primary progressive MS(PPMS)and secondary progressive MS(SPMS).Both neurodegeneration and inflammation are present along the natural history of the ***,the balance of both phenomena varies according to the course of the *** relapsing/remitting MS form,the acute inflammation,mainly adaptive immunity,predominates over the neurodegeneration,being the main cause of the *** SPMS and PPMS,the neurodegeneration predominates over the inflammation,which appears as chronic inflammation,being innate immunity(microglia and astroglia)the main feature in the neurodegenerative process.

Microstructural evaluation of initial dissolution of aluminosilicate particles and formation of geopolymer material

The rheological behavior of microparticulate structures of geopolymers was *** materials were developed from alternative sources of aluminosilicate and were activated in different concentrations using 5,10,and 15M sodium hydroxide,and sodium silicate,which were added in a 2:1ratio (by volume).The solid constituents used were bottom ash/metakaolin and neat metakaolin in a 2:1blend. The theological characteristics were determined after 5min of homogenization and a subsequent curing of the pastes at room temperature for 28 *** materials presented amorphous characteristics, which confirmed the formation of geopolymers.A thixotropic behavior was observed for all forrfiulations,except for bottom ash/metakaolin activated at 5M,which resulted in geopolymers with a lower intensity compared with those activated at 10 and 15M,High activator concentrations exhibited a proportional relationship for geopolymer ring growth,which resulted in a reduced structure mobility and, consequently,an increased viscosity and yield *** effects are more evident in the metakaolin samples,and are associated with the water content that is required for *** that were activated with 10M sodium hydroxide presented a favorable workability and particle packing,in terms of the theological and structural aspects.

Hormonal modulation of reproduction and fertility signaling in polistine wasps

In social insects,it has been suggested that reproduction and the production of particular fertilitylinked cuticular hydrocarbons(CHC)may be under shared juvenile hormone(JH)control,and this could have been key in predisposing such cues to later evolve into full-fledged queen pheromone ***,to date,only few studies have experimentally tested this“hormonal pleiotropy”***,we formally test this hypothesis using data from four species of Polistine wasps,Polistes dominula,Polistes satan,Mischocyttarus metathoracicus,and Mischocyttarus cassununga,and experimental treatments with JH using the JH analogue methoprene and the anti-JH *** line with reproduction being under JH control,our results show that across these four species,precocene significantly decreased ovary development when compared with both the acetone solvent-only control and the methoprene *** with the hormonal pleiotropy hypothesis,these effects on reproduction were further matched by subtle shifts in the CHC profiles,with univariate analyses showing that in *** and *** the abundance of particular linear alkanes and mono-methylated alkanes were affected by ovary development and our hormonal *** results indicate that in primitively eusocial wasps,and particularly in Polistes,reproduction and the production of some CHC cues are under joint JH *** suggest that pleiotropic links between reproduction and the production of such hydrocarbon cues have been key enablers for the origin of true fertility and queen signals in more derived,advanced eusocial insects.

Analysis of South Hemisphere Temperature Anomalies over the Last Millennium up to the Beginning of the Contemporary Age: A Comparison between a Statistical Model and a Global Dynamic Model

We analyze the consistency of the coupled atmosphere-ocean GISS-Er climate model in reproducing South American temperature anomalies over the last millennium. For that purpose, we compare the model results with the Neukom’s temperature anomaly reconstruction provided by a statistical model that uses multiproxy data and climatological temperature anomalies. Specifically, we examine temperature anomalies for summer and winter of a 6-member ensemble of the GISS-Er model with 1× solar forcing and 2× solar forcing, calculated for the period 1000-1899. Using the Neukom’s reconstructions and the model outputs, we calculate the summer mean anomalies of the period 1001-1700 (a period that includes Medieval Climate Anomaly -MCA- and Little Ice Age -LIA-), and winter mean anomalies of the period 1706-1800 (a period that includes the pre-industrial period). These mean anomalies are subtracted from Neukom’s reconstructions defining the reconstructions wrt 1001-1700 (summer) and wrt 1706-1800 (summer and winter). In general, the model is not very consistent with the reconstructions, since the model’s mean and spread show very small interannual variability in contrast to what the reconstructions exhibit, and often with anomalies of opposite sign. In the period 1001-1700, the model presents, on average, negative temperature anomalies for the 1× and 2× forcing. In the period 1706-1800, the model displays positive anomalies for summer and negative anomalies for winter for the 1× and 2× forcing. In particular, the anomaly that better reproduces the sign of the reconstructions is that wrt 1001-1700 with 1× forcing and for summer. The model has an error of only 33% in reproducing the sign of the anomalies, in comparison to the Neukom’s reconstruction for the same reference period.
