Estimating areal carbon fixation of intertidal macroalgal community based on composition dynamics and laboratory measurements

The community dynamics and potential carbon ?xation of intertidal macroalgae were investigated monthly from April 2014 to April 2015 in the northwest coast of Yellow Sea. Seasonal variations in biomass and carbon ?xation were presented and showed close relationship with community *** carbon ?xation rate ranged from 0.48±0.13 mg C/(g FW ·d) to 4.35±0.12 mg C/(g FW ·d). Sargassum thunbergii, Chondrus ocellatus and Ulva intestinalis were three most in?uential species which contributed27%, 21.9% and 18.5% variation of carbon ?xation rate, respectively. Standing carbon stocks ranged from7.52 g C/m^2 to 41.31 g C/m^2, and estimated carbon stocks varied from 11.77 g C/m 2 to 96.49 g C/m^2. The larger dif ference between estimated and standing carbon stocks implied that more ?xed carbon was exported from the community in summer and autumn than in winter. This study suggested that intertidal macroalgal community could provide a potential function in carbon ?xation of coastal ecosystem.

Ytterbium(Yb)containing magnesium alloys have aroused extensive interest due to their excellent mechanical properties after thermomechanical processing and heat ***,the sole effect of Yb addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of pure Mg matrix remains uncertain to *** this work,the effects of Yb concentration on the texture development and tensile properties of pure Mg matrix during hot extrusion and the subsequent annealing were systematically *** results revealed that the constitutional supercooling induced by Yb addition refined the as-cast microstructure but exerted a negligible effect on the original columnar grain *** extruded at 300°C,the dynamic recrystallization(DRX)process was considerably *** in-grain misorientation axes(IGMA)analysis combined with TEM observation indicated that non-basal slips operated with increasing Yb ***,the prismaticslip should be robustly activated in Mg-1.0 Yb extrudate,promoting the formation of the texture with{10?10}plane normal to the extrusion direction(ED),while for the Mg?2.0 Yb counterpart,the increased activity of pyramidalslip and the relaxation of basal/dislocations generated an ED-tilted texture *** preferential grain growth dominated the subsequent annealing texture development at 400°C when a comparable grain size was *** obvious ED-tilted texture intensity with the peak aroundwas observed in Mg-2.0 Yb alloy,which was primarily caused by grains with the basal orientation vanished and with the non-basal orientations intensified due to a higher concentration of Yb *** by the grain refinement,the Mg-2.0 Yb extrudate exhibited a high tensile yield strength of 304±3.5 MPa,while the subsequently annealed counterpart presented a favorable elongation to failure of 14.8±1.2%,which mainly due to the homogeneous grain structure,weak ED-tilted texture,and dissolution of coarse phases

Nucleic acids with G4 elements play a role in the formation of aggregates involved in intracellular phase *** previous studies suggest that different forms of DNA could act as an accelerating template in Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase(SOD1)***,we examined the regulation of fo rmation and cytotoxicity of the SOD1 aggregates by single-stranded 12-merdeoxynucleotide oligomers(dN)_(12)(N=A,T,G,C;ssDNAs)under acidic *** ssDNAs can be divided into two groups based on their roles in SOD1 binding,exposure of hydrophobic clusters in SOD1,accelerated formation,morphology and cytotoxicity of SOD1 aggregates.G-quadruplexes convert SOD1 into fibrillar aggregates as a template,a fact which was observed for the first time in the nucleic acid regulation of protein ***,the fibrillar or fibril-like SOD1 species with a G-quadruplex provided by(dG)_(12)were less toxic than the amorphous species with(dN)_(12)(N=A,T).This study not only indicates that both morphology and cytotoxicity of protein aggregates can be regulated by the protein-bound DNAs,but also help us understand roles of nucleic aid G-quadruplexes in the formation of aggregates and membrane less organelles involved in intracellular phase transitions.

Abstract Behavioral and physiological responses to light are the two major mechanisms by which natural microphytobenthic assemblages adapt to the intertidal environment and protect themselves from light stress. The present study investigated these photoresponses with different light intensities over 8 h of illumination, and used a specific inhibitor （Latrunculin A, Lat A） for migration to compare migratory and non-migratory microphytobenthos （MPB）. Photosynthetic activity was detected using rapid light curves and induction curves by chlorophyll fluorescence. It showed distinct variation in migratory responses to different light intensities; high light induced downward migration to avoid photoinhibition, and low and medium light （50-250 ~tmol/（m2. s）） promoted upward migration followed by downward migration after certain period of light exposure. No significant difference in non-photochemical quenching （NPQ） or PSII maximal quantum yidd （Fv/Fm） was detected between low and medium light irradiance, possibly indicating that only high light influences the photosynthetic capability of MPB. Decreased photosynthetic activity, indicated by three parameters, the maximum relative electron transport rate （rETRmax）, minimum saturating irradiance （E0 and light utilization coefficient （a）, was observed in MPB after exposure to prolonged illumination under low and medium light. Lat A effectively inhibited the migration of MPB in all light treatments and induced lower Fv/Fm under high light （500 and 100 μmol/（m2·s）） and prolonged illumination at 250 μmol/（m2·s）, but did not significantly influence Fv/Fm under low light （0-100 μmol/（m2·s）） or NPQ. The increase of NPQ in Lat A treatments with time implied that the MPB assemblages can recover their physiological photoprotection capacity to adapt to light stress. Non-migratory MPB exhibited lower light use efficiency （lower a） and lower maximum photosynthetic capacity （lower rETRm^x） than migratory MPB under light intensities above 250

The surface and bulk properties of Ce-5% La were studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)and X-ray diffraction (XRD), *** XRD analysis shows that cerium in bulk is in γ-phase, and its lattice parameter is 0.516 *** we also find Ce2O3 in the bulk from the XRD figure but no existence of metal lanthanum because of its small *** XPS analysis shows that there are always oxides existing in the *** O1s peak always exists at the binding energy of 530.3 eV, which may be attributed to Ce2O3 and La2O3, but no evidence was found for the existence of *** is concluded that there is a thick layer of Ce2O3 on the sample *** the Ce3d peak show multi-split in the figure, in which there are two peaks in each region, 3d5/2 and 3d3/2, and the binding energy of these peaks are 882.86, 887.70 eV for 3d5/2, and 901.44, 905.93 eV for 3d3/*** special phenomena can be attributed to the changes of 4f electronic configuration, and the cerium in the sample exhibits properties similar to *** the influence of the addition of lanthanum to cerium is not visible, and further investigations are expected.

The performance of Li||Sb-Sn liquid metal batteries(LMBs) is hindered by the corrosion of the Sb-Sn cathode on its current collector. Herein, a uniform, dense, and low-oxidized W coating was prepared by plasma spraying, which can effectively resist the corrosion of the cathode and improve the cycle stability of the Li||Sb-Sn LMBs. For the first time, micro-CT nondestructive inspection is applied in the field of LMBs. The corrosion micromorphology and composition evolution of the SS304 matrix and Sb-Sn cathode with or without the plasma-sprayed W coating is obtained without disassembling the battery, which proves that the W coating can effectively protect the SS304 matrix. Our autonomous new LMB device for nondestructive inspection is universal and can be applied to different LMBs systems for advancing knowledge of corrosion mechanism and protection. This work guarantees the ability to directly visualize the inner critical positions in three dimensions and fills the knowledge gap in the field of LMB detection technology.

Cognitive factors associated with the willingness for HIV testing among pregnant women in China

Background The spread of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome （HIV/AIDS） epidemic in the worldwide trend is not contained effectively. The pregnant women infected HIV seriously in the high HIV epidemic areas in China. The transmission of HIV to child may be cut off if HIV positive mother was found early by HIV testing. Pregnant women mandatorily received the HIV counseling and testing services. Most of them did not know the knowledge about HIV prevention and were not willing to receive HIV testing actively. Willingness for HIV testing among pregnant women was investigated, which can help to promote them to take up HIV testing actively. This study assessed the prevalence of the willingness for HIV testing and cognitive factors associated with it. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted to 500 pregnant women via face-to-face interviews with anonymous structured questionnaire guided by the Health Belief Model （HBM）. Results The prevalence of the willingness for HIV testing was 58.60%. Perceived higher susceptibility to HIV （multivariate- adjusted odds ratio （ORm）=2.02, 95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.40-5.06）, more knowledge for HIV （ORm=1.92, 95% CI： 1.11-3.87） and perceived less social stigma （ORm=0.80, 95% CI： 0.34-0.91） were associated with higher willingness for HIV testing among pregnant women. Conclusion To prevent HIV mother to children transmission, it is necessary to enhance knowledge for HIV, change cognitive factors and increase willingness for HIV testing among pregnant women.
