Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Level Might Be a Useful Indicator of Disease Severity in Obese Children With Atopic Dermatitis:A Case-Control Study

Objective:To assess the relationship between the severity of atopic dermatitis(AD)in children of varying weight categories and their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D]***:The study population comprised 899 patients with AD and 854 age-and sex-matched *** Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis H tests were used to assess differences between groups,and Spearman correlation analysis was used to test ***:The 25(OH)D level in the AD group was M(Q_(25),Q_(75)),24.0(19.7,28.4)ng/mL,which was significantly lower than the control group(26.4[23.6,29.9]ng/mL;Z=-3.34,P=0.001).25(OH)D levels in children with AD were negatively correlated with body mass index(r=-0.30,P<0.001),Severity scoring of Atopic Dermatitis(SCORAD;r=-0.14,P<0.001),total immunoglobulin E(r=-0.13,P<0.001),and eosinophil(r=-0.08,P=0.017).There were statistically significant differences in 25(OH)D(H=18.46,P<0.001),total immunoglobulin E(H=9.13,P=0.010),eosinophil(H=67.17,P<0.001),and SCORAD(H=10.49,P=0.005)among groups with different body mass index *** 25(OH)D levels were 22.3(17.5,27.1)ng/mL in the overweight AD group and 22.3(17.6,25.7)ng/mL in the obese AD group,which were significantly lower than those in the normal-weight AD group(24.7[20.4,25.5]ng/mL;P=0.003,P=0.004).25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with SCORAD in obese AD patients(r=-0.25,P=0.010).Conclusion:Vitamin D insufficient or deficient is obvious in children AD *** 25(OH)D levels in the overweight/obese AD group are significantly lower than those in the normal-weight AD *** D level is negatively correlated with SCORAD in obese children with AD.

Animal body size variation is of particular interest in evolutionary biology,but the genetic basis remains largely *** studies have shown the presence of two parallel evolutionary genetic clusters within the fish genus Epinephelus with evident divergence in body size,providing an excellent opportunity to investigate the genetic basis of body size variation in ***,we performed phylotranscriptomic analysis and reconstructed the phylogeny of 13 epinephelids originating from the South China *** genetic clades with an estimated divergence time of approximately 15.4 million years ago were correlated with large and small body size,respectively.A total of 180 rapidly evolving genes and two positively selected genes were identified between the two *** enrichment analyses of these candidate genes revealed distinct enrichment categories between the two *** pathways and genes may play important roles in body size variation in groupers through complex regulatory *** on our results,we speculate that the ancestors of the two divergent groups of groupers may have adapted to different environments through habitat selection,leading to genetic variations in metabolic patterns,organ development,and lifespan,resulting in body size divergence between the two locally adapted *** findings provide important insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying body size variation in groupers and species differentiation.

Beta Ti−35Nb sandwich-structured composites with various reinforcing layers were designed and produced using additive manufacturing(AM)to achieve a balance between light weight and high *** impact of reinforcing layers on the compressive deformation behavior of porous composites was investigated through micro-computed tomography(Micro-CT)and finite element method(FEM)*** results indicate that the addition of reinforcement layers to sandwich structures can significantly enhance the compressive yield strength and energy absorption capacity of porous metal structures;Micro-CT in-situ observation shows that the strain of the porous structure without the reinforcing layer is concentrated in the middle region,while the strain of the porous structure with the reinforcing layer is uniformly distributed;FEM analysis reveals that the reinforcing layers can alter stress distribution and reduce stress concentration,thereby promoting uniform deformation of the porous *** addition of reinforcing layer increases the compressive yield strength of sandwich-structured composite materials by 124%under the condition of limited reduction of porosity,and the yield strength increases from 4.6 to 10.3 MPa.

Electron Transport Properties of Graphene-Based Quantum Wires

We study the electronic transport in quantum wire structures made of graphene. By using the nonequilibrium Green function method, the transmission is studied for varies sizes samples. Our results show that the transmission sensitive depends on the size of the system and exhibits fluctuations due to the mismating of propagating modes between the central region and the leads. The number of resonant transmission peaks increases with the increase of length of the wire, while the width of the leads mainly affect the transmission in the region of low energy. A central energy gap in the transmission spectrum is more likely to appear in the quantum wire system than in the uniform armchair graphene nanoribbons. Moreover, the energy gap can be widened for a certain size of the quantum wire system by changing the width of the leads. These results may have potential applications in designing graphene-based devices.

Discovery of novel inhibitors of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins derived from Bim BH3 domain

The BH3 mimetics targeting the interaction between the BH3-only proteins and their prosurvival Bcl-2family proteins have shown enormous potential as cancer therapeutics. Herein, seven analogues targeting anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins derived from the Bim BH3 domain via sequence simplification and/or modification are described. The in vitro binding affinity on anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins and cell killing activity were evaluated. The results showed that analogues could significantly bind to target proteins and exhibited anti-cancer effect against three cancer cell lines. Of particular interest were the analogue SM-5（KD= 9.48 nmol/L for Bcl-2） and SM-6（KD= 0.08 nmol/L for Bcl-xL）, which exhibited improved binding affinity compared with the lead Bim（KD= 16.90 nmol/L for Bcl-2 and 22.2 nmol/L for Bcl-xL, respectively）. These results indicated that the peptide sequence containing the four hydrophobic side chains occupying pockets within the BH3-recognition cleft of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins might be the minimum sequence required for the bioactivity and the active core region of Bim. Promising inhibitors of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins with high bioactivity might be designed based on the active core.

Impact of different stereoisomers of inositol on insulin sensitivity of gestational diabetes mellitus patients

BACKGROUND Inositol is a hexa-carbon polyol,a naturally soluble vitamin,often found in various *** To discuss the impact of different stereoisomers of inositol on insulin sensitivity of gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM)*** Eighty GDM pregnant women were divided into four groups according to their treatment received:A group(placebo folic acid 400μg/d),B group[myo-inositol(MI)1500 mg,twice a day],C group[D-chiro-inositol(DCI)250 mg,twice a day],and D group(inositol MI and inositol DCI 1500 mg/250 mg,twice a day).Each patient routinely used dietary guidance adjustments and did some safe and effective aerobic exercise in addition to receiving placebo or inositol from GDM diagnosis to ***,total cholesterol,fasting plasma glucose,oral glucose tolerance test postprandial glucose(2 h postprandial blood glucose),fasting insulin,fasting plasma glucose,and glycosylated hemoglobin levels and Homeostasis Model Assessment-insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)and Homeostasis Model Assessment-insulin sensitivity index(HOMA-ISI)scores were determined before treatment and 8 wk after treatment *** maternal and infant outcomes,including hypoglycemia,excessive amniotic fluid,premature infants,macrosomia,fetal distress etc.,were also *** There was no statistical difference in the baseline data of each *** levels of 2 h blood glucose,glycosylated hemoglobin,fasting insulin,total cholesterol,and triglyceride in the B,C,and D groups were significantly lower than those in the control group(A group)after treatment(P<0.05).Moreover,compared with the B group,the level of the above indexes in the C and D groups decreased more significantly,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The HOMA-IR of B,C,and D groups decreased significantly,and the HOMA-ISI increased significantly compared with the A group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05),among which the decrease of HOMA-IR and the increase of HOMA-ISI

Neural decoding based on probabilistic neural network

Brain-machine interface (BMI) has been developed due to its possibility to cure severe body paralysis. This technology has been used to realize the direct control of prosthetic devices,such as robot arms,computer cursors,and paralyzed muscles. A variety of neural decoding algorithms have been designed to explore relationships between neural activities and movements of the limbs. In this paper,two novel neural decoding methods based on probabilistic neural network (PNN) in rats were introduced,the PNN decoder and the modified PNN (MPNN) decoder. In the ex-periment,rats were trained to obtain water by pressing a lever over a pressure threshold. Microelectrode array was implanted in the motor cortex to record neural activity,and pressure was recorded by a pressure sensor synchronously. After training,the pressure values were estimated from the neural signals by PNN and MPNN decoders. Their per-formances were evaluated by a correlation coefficient (CC) and a mean square error (MSE). The results show that the MPNN decoder,with a CC of 0.8657 and an MSE of 0.2563,outperformed the traditionally-used Wiener filter (WF) and Kalman filter (KF) decoders. It was also observed that the discretization level did not affect the MPNN performance,indicating that the MPNN decoder can handle different tasks in BMI system,including the detection of movement states and estimation of continuous kinematic parameters.

Major causes of fever of unknown origin at Peking Union Medical College Hospital in the past 26 years

Background Despite the recent advances in medicine, fever of unknown origin （FUO） remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge even to expert physicians. To increase the knowledge of FUO, we conducted a retrospective study to investigate the causes of FUO and the change of major causes of FUO during the past 26 years. Methods The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed from 997 patients with FUO hospitalized at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital （PUMCH） between January 2004 and October 2010. Furthermore, the results were compared to that reported in previous studies of FUO in PUMCH since 1985. Results Of the 997 FUO cases, definite diagnosis was eventually achieved in 797 （79.9%） patients. The most common cause of FUO was infectious diseases （479 cases, 48.0%）, with tuberculosis accounting for 45.3% （217/479） of the cases of infections. One hundred and sixty-eight （16.9%） patients were diagnosed with connective tissue diseases, with Still＇s disease and vasculitis accounted for 31.5% （53/168） and 24.4% （41/168） of this category, respectively. Neoplasms and miscellaneous causes were found in 7.9% （79/997） and 7.1% （71/997）, respectively. However, no definite diagnosis had been made in the remaining 200 （20.1%） cases until they were discharged from the hospital. Conclusions During different periods, infectious diseases, especially tuberculosis, were the leading etiology of FUO and the proportion of tuberculosis had no significant difference. While the frequency of neoplasms was descending, the proportion of lymphoma in neoplasm was ascending; the frequency of undiagnosed＇cases was increasing, but in most FUO cases the causes can be diagnosed eventually after careful analysis of clinical data.

Guiding properties of proton-implanted Nd^(3+)-doped phosphate glass waveguides

We report on the fabrication and properties of an optical waveguide in Nd^(3+)-doped phosphate *** planar waveguide was obtained by 550-ke V proton implantation with a dose of 8.0×10^(16)ions/cm^(2).The proton–glass interaction was simulated by the stopping and range of ions in matter(SRIM software).The characteristics of the waveguide including the refractive index profile and the near-field intensity distribution were studied by the reflectivity calculation method and the end-face coupling *** optical waveguide demonstrated multi-mode behavior at the wavelength of 632.8 *** propagation features of the proton-implanted Nd^(3+)-doped phosphate glass waveguide shows its potential to operate as an integrated photonic device.
