NORMAL APPEARANCE OF LARGE FIELD DIFFUSION WEIGHTED IMAGING ON 3.0T MRI

Objective To evaluate the normal appearance of large field diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) on 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Twenty healthy volunteers and thirty patients with benign prostate hyperplasia were included in this study. All patients were examined with large field DWI on 3.0T MRI. Normal tissue appearance was analyzed and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of normal tissue with high signal intensity was measured. The ADC values of bilateral symmetrical tissue were also compared. The ADC values of intervertebral disks of healthy people younger than 50 years and exceeding 50 years were compared. Results Salivary gland, spleen, kidney, gallbladder, bladder, prostate, seminal vesicle, testis, intervertebral disk, liquid in articular cavity and lymph node showed high signal intensity on large field DWI, while lung, liver and bone showed hypo-signal intensity. The mean ADC values of partial hyperintensity tissue were as followed: parotid gland (1.088 ± 0.114) ×10-3 mm2/s, submaxillary gland (1.309 ± 0.189) ×10-3 mm2/s, kidney (1.909 ± 0.143) ×10-3 mm2/s, seminal vesicle (1.669 ± 0.168) ×10-3 mm2/s, testis (1.028 ± 0.075) ×10-3 mm2/s, spleen (0.963 ± 0.108) ×10-3 mm2/s, bladder (2.898 ± 0.267) ×10-3 mm2/s, prostate (1.448 ± 0.132) ×10-3 mm2/s, intervertebral disks (1.360 ± 0.140) ×10-3 mm2/s. No statistical significance was found between the ADC values of bilateral symmetrical tissues. The difference of ADC values of intervertebral disks of healthy people younger than 50 years [(1.372 ± 0.142) ×10-3 mm2/s] and exceeding 50 years [(1.344 ± 0.134) ×10-3 mm2/s] showed statistical significance (P = 0.040). Conclusion Understanding the high signal intensity of normal tissue on large field DWI may help to differentiate the normal tissues and abnormal ones.

Objective To investigate the signal intensity and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of bone marrow of normal adult man on diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). Methods Fifteen healthy volunteers and thirty-eight patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia or normal prostate were enrolled in this study, with age range 28-82 years old (mean 55.26 ± 18.05 years). All people were examined with large field DWI on a 3.0T magnetic resonance scanner, which ranges from the top of head to the lower limb. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on the DWI and ADC of lumber vertebra at renal hilum level, left ilium and superior segment of left femur were measured. The measured SNR and ADC value of the above sites were compared by one way analysis of variance and their correlations with age were investigated by Pearson's correlation analysis. Results The SNR of lumber vertebra, left ilium and left femur showed no significant difference (F = 0.271, P = 0.763). The SNR of lumber vertebra (r = 0.309, P = 0.024) and left ilium (r = 0.359, P = 0.008) showed positive correlation with age, while the SNR of left femur showed no correlation with age (r = -0.163, P = 0.283). The ADC of lumber vertebra [(0.617 ± 0.177) ×10-3 mm2/s] was significantly higher than that of left ilium [(0.404 ± 0.112) ×10-3 mm2/s, P < 0.001] and left femur [(0.362 ± 0.092) ×10-3 mm2/s, P < 0.001], while the ADC of left ilium and left femur had no significant difference. The ADC of lumber vertebra, left ilium and left femur showed no correlation with age. Conclusion Understanding of age-related changes of normal adult bone marrow on DWI is very important to differentiate the normal bone marrow and abnormal lesions.

There have been significant interests in recent years for incorporating dynamic bonds into polymer materials for achieving multiple functionalities,such as self-healing,recycling,stimuli-responsiveness,and so ***,the impact of dynamic bonds on the polymer dynamics is actually less *** this study,we investigate a self-healing solid-liquid elastomer(SLE),which is a dual-crosslinked network made by coupling a permanently crosslinked polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)network with polyborosiloxane(PBS)via abundant dynamic boron/oxygen dative *** double-quantum(DQ)NMR reveals that the crosslinking degree is reduced while the structural heterogeneity of network is enhanced with increasing PBS content,i.e.,increasing the content of dynamic boron/oxygen dative *** experiments clearly reveal two chain relaxation modes in the SLE samples with a characteristic relaxation time of around 2.1 s and 11.8 s,corresponding to the relaxation of coupled PBS and PDMS chains,*** master curves obtained from variable-temperature frequency-dependent rheological experiments also reveal enhanced heterogeneity of chain relaxation with increasing PBS ***,the impact of boron/oxygen dative bonds on the Rouse dynamics is further revealed by fast-field-cycling(FFC)NMR experiments,where the spinlattice relaxation rate(R_(1))of all SLE samples follows the same power law of R_(1)(ω)∝ω^(-0.33).Nevertheless,the incorporation of PBS did slightly increase the energy barrier of Rouse *** study well demonstrates a combined use of rheology and solid-state NMR spectroscopy can provide piercing insights into the interplay of crosslinking structures and dynamics of polymer materials.

Probing the Two-stage Transition upon Crossing the Glass Transition of Polystyrene by Solid-state NMR

A two-stage transition upon crossing the glass transition of polystyrene with increasing temperature was precisely determined and interpreted by using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance （SSNMR）, 1H-XH dipolar couplings based double quantum-filtered （DQF） and dipolar filter （DF） experiments and 13C chemical shift anisotropy （CSA） based centerband-only detection of exchange （CODEX） experiment are used to fully characterize the time scale of molecular motions during the glass transition. While differential scanning calorimetry （DSC） and CODEX experiment predicted the first stage of glass transiton, DQF and DF experiments provided the evidence for the second stage transition during which the time scale of molecular motions changed from very slow （t 〉 ms） to very fast （t 〈 Its）. The first stage of glass transition begins with the occurrence of remarkable slow re-orientation motions of the polymer backbone segments and ends when the degree of slow motion reaches maximum. The onset and endpoint of the conventional calorimetric glass transition of polystyrene can be quantitatively determined at the molecular level by SSNMR. In the second stage, a subsequent dramatic transition associated with the melting of the glassy components was observed. In this stage liquid-like NMR signals appeared and rapidly increased in intensity after a characteristic temperature Tf （-1.1Tg）. The signals associated with the glassy components completely disappeared at another characteristic temperature Tc （-1.2Tg）.

Mobilization of Peripheral Blood Stem Cells Using Regimen Combining Docetaxel with Granulocyte Colony-stimulating Factor in Breast Cancer Patients

Original article：A novel two-stage complete repair method for pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries

Background Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect （PA-VSD） and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries （MAPCAs） remains a challenging complex congenital heart disease nowadays. In the present study, we aimed to develop a two-stage surgical method and to evaluate outcomes of this method in managing PA-VSD and MAPCAs. Methods Between December 2003 and December 2008, 7 female and 4 male patients between the age of 5 and 10 years who were suffering from PA-VSD and MAPCAs were selected and recruited. The native pulmonary artery trunks were absent in all patients; the lungs were solely supplied by major aortopulmonary collaterals, and the numbers of supplied lung segments ranged from 15 to 20 （17.9±1.6）. There were a total of 43 MAPCAs in all the patients （3-5 （3.9~0.7） MAPCAs per patient）. The accumulated Nakata index was （222.9＋_29.9） mm2/m2 （ranged from 182 to 272）. All the patients underwent two sequential operations. Stage one included left major aortopulmonary collateral unifocalization and modified Blalock-Taussig shunt from left posterior lateral thoracotomy; stage two comprised right unifocalization, ligation of the shunt, followed by ventricular septal defect closure and right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction assisted with cardiopulmonary bypass from midline sternotomy. Results All the patients survived the initial surgery, but one of them died of low cardiac output syndrome on the third day after the second operation. Postoperative complications included pneumonia in one case and capillary leak syndrome in another. Postoperative oxygen saturation maintained about 95%-100%, which was significantly higher than pre-operation （P 〈0.01）. During the follow-up period of 3-51 （25.4±15.2） months, there were no late death and no need for reintervention. All the patients enjoyed their lives with good conditions. Nerve plane-sparing radical hysterectomy： a simplified technique of nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy for invasive cervical cancer

Background In order to simplify the complicated procedure of nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy, a novel technique characterized by integral preservation of the autonomic nerve plane has been employed for invasive cervical cancer. The objective of this study was to introduce the nerve plane-sparing radical hysterectomy technique and compare its efficacy and safety with that of nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy. Methods From September 2006 to August 2010, 73 consecutive patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB to IIA cervical cancer underwent radical hysterectomy with two different nerve-sparing approaches. Nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy was performed for the first 16 patients （nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy group）. The detailed autenomic nerve structures were identified and separated by meticulous dissection during this procedure. After January 2008, the nerve plane-sparing radical hysterectomy procedure was developed and performed for the next 57 patients （nerve plane-sparing radical hysterectomy group）. During this modified procedure, the nerve plane （meso-ureter and its extens;ion） containing most of the autonomic nerve structures was integrally preserved. The patients＇ clinicopathologic characteristics, surgical parameters, and outcomes of postoperative bladder function were compared between the two groups. Results There were no significant differences between the nerve plane-sparing radical hysterectomy and nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy groups regarding age, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage, pathological type, preoperative treatment, or need for intraoperative blood transfusion. The nerve plane-sparing radical hysterectomy group had a higher body mass index than that of the nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy group （P=0.028）. Biochemical and Physiological Changes of Three Watermelon Cultivars Infested with Fusarium oxysporum ***

The dynamic changes in membrane permeability, activities of disease-related enzymes, and contents of pathogenesis-relevant chemical compounds and photosynthetic pigments in root cells of three watermelon cultivars were studied after inoculation with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum at seedling stage. The results showed that the capacity of self-regulating and returning to normal status of cultivar Kelunsheng (resistant) was greater than that of a susceptible cultivar, Zaohua, in terms of malonaldehyde (MDA) content, relative conductivity, and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The resistant cultivar maintained a higher activity of dehydrogenase, higher content of vitamin C(Vc) , and relatively lower content of soluble sugar than the susceptible cultivar. The content of soluble protein was higher in the resistant cultivar than that in the susceptible one at day 1 after inoculation. The capacities of the resistant cultivar to inhibit chlorophyll deterioration and maintain a higher carotenoid content were significantly stronger than those of the susceptible cultivar.
