Inhibitory effect of different Dendrobium species on LPS-induced inflammation in macrophages via suppression of MAPK pathways

Dendrobii Caulis(DC), named ‘Shihu' in Chinese, is a precious herb in traditional Chinese medicine. It is widely used to nourish stomach, enhance body fluid production, tonify "Yin" and reduce heat. More than thirty Dendrobium species are used as folk medicine. Some compounds from DC exhibit inhibitory effects on macrophage inflammation. In the present study, we compared the anti-inflammatory effects among eight Dendrobium species. The results provided evidences to support Dendrobium as folk medicine, which exerted its medicinal function partially by its inhibitory effects on inflammation. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Dendrobium species, mouse macrophage cell line RAW264.7 was activated by lipopolysaccharide. The nitric oxide(NO) level was measured using Griess reagent while the pro-inflammatory cytokines were tested by ELISA. The protein expressions of inducible NO synthase(iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs) phosphorylation were evaluated by Western blotting analysis. Among the eight Dendrobium species, both water extracts of D. thyrsiflorum ***(DTW) and D. chrysotoxum Lindl(DCHW) showed most significant inhibitory effects on NO production in a concentration-dependent manner. DTW also significantly reduced TNF-α, MCP-1, and IL-6 production. Further investigations showed that DTW suppressed iNOS and COX-2 expression as well as ERK and JNK phosphorylation, suggesting that the inhibitory effects of DTW on LPS-induced macrophage inflammation was through the suppression of MAPK pathways. In conclusion, D. thyrsiflorum *** was demonstrated to have potential to be used as alternative or adjuvant therapy for inflammation.

Hand dysfunction after transradial artery catheterization for coronary procedures

AIM To sythesize the available literature on hand dysfunction after transradial *** We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE. The search results were reviewed by two independent judicators for studies that met the inclusion criteria and relevant reviews. We included studies that evaluated any transradial procedure and evaluated hand function outcomes post transradial procedure. There were no restrictions based on sample size. There was no restriction on method of assessing hand function which included disability, nerve damage, motor or sensory loss. There was no restriction based on language of study. Data was extracted, these results were narratively *** Out of 555 total studies 13 studies were finally included in review. A total of 3815 participants with mean age of 62.5 years were included in this review. A variety of methods were used to assess sensory and motor dysfunction of hand. Out of 13 studies included, only 3 studies reported nerve damage with a combined incidence of 0.16%, 5 studies reported sensory loss, tingling and numbness with a pooled incidence of 1.52%. Pain after transradial access was the most common form of hand dysfunction(6.67%) reported in 3 studies. The incidence of hand dysfunction defined as disability, grip strength change, power loss or any other hand complication was incredibly low at 0.26%. Although radial artery occlusion was not our primary end point for this review, it was observed in 2.41% of the participants in total of five studies *** Hand dysfunction may occur post transradial catheterisation and majority of symptoms resolve without any clinical sequel.

Crosstalk between degradation and bioenergetics: how autophagy and endolysosomal processes regulate energy production

Cells undergo metabolic reprogramming to adapt to changes in nutrient availability, cellular activity, and transitions in cell states. The balance between glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration is crucial for energy production, and metabolic reprogramming stipulates a shift in such balance to optimize both bioenergetic efficiency and anabolic requirements. Failure in switching bioenergetic dependence can lead to maladaptation and pathogenesis. While cellular degradation is known to recycle precursor molecules for anabolism, its potential role in regulating energy production remains less explored. The bioenergetic switch between glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration involves transcription factors and organelle homeostasis, which are both regulated by the cellular degradation pathways. A growing body of studies has demonstrated that both stem cells and differentiated cells exhibit bioenergetic switch upon perturbations of autophagic activity or endolysosomal processes. Here, we highlighted the current understanding of the interplay between degradation processes, specifically autophagy and endolysosomes, transcription factors, endolysosomal signaling, and mitochondrial homeostasis in shaping cellular bioenergetics. This review aims to summarize the relationship between degradation processes and bioenergetics, providing a foundation for future research to unveil deeper mechanistic insights into bioenergetic regulation.

Comparison of vegetable oils on the uptake of lutein and zeaxanthin by ARPE-19 cells

AIM:To compare the effect of vegetable oils on the uptake of lutein and zeaxanthin by adult retinal pigment epithelial(ARPE)-19 cells in ***:ARPE-19 cells were cultured in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium-F-12 supplemented with 10%foetal bovine serum and 1%penicillin–streptomycin in a humidified 5%CO_(2) incubator maintained at 37℃.Cells were treated with 247μmol/L lutein,49μmol/L zeaxanthin and 1%(v/v)of either coconut oil,corn oil,peanut oil,olive oil,sunflower oil,soybean oil,castor oil,or linseed oil for *** and zeaxanthin concentration in the cells were quantified by high performance liquid ***:Among the oils tested,the highest lutein and zeaxanthin uptake was observed with coconut oil while the lowest was observed with linseed ***:ARPE-19 uptake of lutein and zeaxanthin are found to be dependent on the type of oils.

SMA molecular line survey towards the massive star-forming region G10.6-0.4in W31complex

Line surveys of complex molecules with millimeter and sub-millimeter telescopes are important for probing the physical and chemical environments of massive star forming regions(MSFRs).We present a molecular line survey with the Submillimeter Array(SMA) in the frequency ranges of 220.3–222.3 GHz and 230.3–232.3 GHz toward G10.6-0.4, the brightest star forming core in the W31 complex. Ninety-nine transitions from 22 molecular species and their isotopologues are identified. The moment 0 images of typical molecules show a compact core which is concentrated at the continuum peak position. Based on the local thermodynamic equilibrium assumption, the molecular line data are modeled. The rotational temperatures of those molecular species range from 96 to 178 K and their column densities range from 2.0×1014to 3.7×1017cm-2. The observational data suggest that all complex molecules are located in a warm environment. Chemical environments of the molecules are discussed. We compared molecular abundances and gas temperatures in G10.6-0.4 with those in other MSFRs, and found that gas temperatures and fractional abundances of specific molecules in G10.6-0.4 are similar to the typical MSFR W51 North, suggesting that there are similar physical and chemical environments in these two MSFRs.

Socioeconomic Distribution of Health and Health Care Utilization in a New Town in Hong Kong, China

Objectives To assess the association of socioeconomic indicators with various chronic and acute illnesses and the utilization of public health care in a new town in Hong Kong, China. Methods Illness experience and socioeconomic and demographic data of 7570 residents from 2022 randomly selected households were collected through telephone interviews. The relationships between socioeconomic indicators and illnesses/choice of health care were explored using stepwise logistic regressions after adjusting for sex and age. Results Significant positive associations were noted between low household income and diabetes mellitus, any chronic illnesses among adults and flu among younger subjects; low educational level and accident-related illness among adults; being born in Chinese mainland and flu, any acute illness in adults. Chronic hepatitis B(CHB)-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a major health problem in AsianPacific *** therapy reduces,but does not eliminate the risk of *** would be a heavy financial burden in most low and middle economic countries if all CHB patients received antiviral therapy and HCC ***,there is a need for accurate risk prediction to assist prognostication,decisions on the need for antiviral therapy and HCC surveillance.A few wellestablished risk factors for HCC,namely advanced age,male gender,high viral load,cirrhosis etc.,are the core components of three HCC risk scores:CU-HCC,GAGHCC and REACH-B *** 3 scores were confirmed to be accurate in predicting HCC up to 10 years in treatment-na ve *** validity and applicability have recently been demonstrated in a large cohort of entecavir treatment patients.A decrease in risk scores after antiviral therapy translates to a lower risk of *** findings support the application of HCC risk scores in all CHB *** levels of care and different intensities of HCC surveillance should be offered according to the risk profile of *** at risk of HCC should undergo regular HCC surveillance,even when they are receiving antiviral treatment.

Model Checking for a General Linear Model with Nonignorable Missing Covariates

In this paper, we investigate the model checking problem for a general linear model with nonignorable missing covariates. We show that, without any parametric model assumption for the response probability, the least squares method yields consistent estimators for the linear model even if only the complete data are applied. This makes it feasible to propose two testing procedures for the corresponding model checking problem： a score type lack-of-fit test and a test based on the empirical process. The asymptotic properties of the test statistics are investigated. Both tests are shown to have asymptotic power 1 for local alternatives converging to the null at the rate n-r, 0 ≤ r 〈 1/2. Simulation results show that both tests perform satisfactorily.
