Clinical significance of serum miR-129-5p in patients with diabetes mellitus presenting macrovascular complications

BACKGRouND Diabetic macrovascular complications(DMCs)are the most common complications encountered during the course of diabetes mellitus(DM)with extremely high mortality rates.Therefore,there is an urgent need to identify specific and sensitive biomarkers for the early diagnosis of DMCs.AIM To investigate the expression and significance of serum miR-129-5p in patients with DM and macrovascular complications.METHODS Serum samples were collected from 36 healthy controls,58 patients with DM presenting no macrovascular complications,and 62 patients with DMCs.The expression of miR-129-5p was detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.Pearson’s correlation assay was performed to analyze the correlation between serum miR-129-5p levels and clinical indicators.Receiver operator characteristic(ROC)analysis was conducted to analyze the diagnostic value of serum miR-129-5p in patients with DM or DMCs.RESULTS There was a 4.378-fold and 7.369-fold increase in serum miR-129-5p expression in the DM(5.346±0.405)and DMCs(8.998±0.631)groups,respectively(Poup(1.221±0.090).In addition,the expression of serum miR-129-5p in patients with DMCs was higher than that in patients with DM,revealing a 1.683-fold increase(P<0.001).Additionally,serum miR-129-5p expression significantly correlated with smoking history,disease duration,and glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c)in patients with DMCs(P<0.001).The area under the ROC curve(AUC)of miR-129-5p as a serum marker was 0.964(95%confidence interval[CI]:0.930-0.997,P<0.001)in distinguishing between patients with DM and healthy controls,whereas the AUC of miR-129-5p as a serum marker was 0.979(95%CI:0.959-0.999,P<0.001)in distinguishing between patients with DMCs and healthy controls.CONCLUSION Elevated serum miR-129-5p expression levels correlate with the development of DMCs and can be utilized as a novel early diagnostic biomarker for DM combined with macrovascular complications.

Exosomes are a class of small extracellular vesicles,30-150 nm in diameter,that transfer biological information(e.g.,DNA,RNA,and protein)via cell-to-cell communication.Exosomes play critical roles in the occurrence and development of human cancers,including colorectal cancer(CRC).Recent studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs)can be encapsulated in exosomes,which transfer lncRNAs from secretory cells into recipient cells.This process affects the progression of CRC,since exosomal lncRNAs display special and extensive functions in CRC tumorigenesis,including malignant proliferation,metastasis,chemoresistance,and inflammatory response.Moreover,due to their specificity and sensitivity,exosomal lncRNAs are released into body fluids(e.g.,urine,sputum,and plasma),which have the potential to be biomarkers of CRC tumorigenesis within screening efforts and medical and epidemiologic research.In this review,we aim to clarify the function and mechanism of exosomal lncRNAs in CRC tumorigenesis and provide a strategy for early diagnosis and medical treatment of this malignancy.

Impact of urbanization on morbidity of hepatitis A:a national panel study in China during 2005–2018

Background The effect of urbanization on the morbidity of hepatitis A remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the association between various urbanization-related indices and hepatitis A morbidity in China.Methods Data on the annual morbidity of hepatitis A, urbanization-related measures (i.e., gross domestic product per capita, the number of hospitalization beds per 1000 persons, illiteracy rate, tap water coverage, motor vehicles per 100 persons, population density, and the proportion of arable land), and meteorological factors in 31 provincial-level administrative divisions of Chinese mainland during 2005–2018 were collected from the National Population and Health Science Data Sharing Platform, China Statistical Yearbooks, and the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System, respectively. Generalized linear mixed models were applied to quantify the impacts of different urbanization-related indices on the morbidity of hepatitis A in China after adjusting for covariates.Results A total of 537,466 hepatitis A cases were reported in China during 2005–2018. The annual morbidity had a decline of 79.4% from 5.64 cases to 1.16 cases per 100,000 people. There were obvious spatial variations with higher morbidity in western China. Nationally, gross domestic product per capita and the number of hospitalization beds per 1000 persons increased from 14,040 to 64,644 CNY and from 2.45 to 6.03 during 2005–2018, respectively. The illiteracy rate decreased from 11.0 to 4.9%. Gross domestic product per capita [relative risk (RR) = 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.92–0.99], and the number of hospitalization beds per 1000 persons (RR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.75–0.83) were associated with the declined morbidity of hepatitis A. By contrast, the increased morbidity of hepatitis A was linked to the illiteracy rate (RR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.02–1.06). Similar influential factors were detected for children and adults, with greater effects witnessed for children.Conclusions People in the western region suffered the heaviest burden of hepatitis

Magnitude and direction of temperature variability affect hospitalization for myocardial infarction and stroke:population-based evidence from Guangzhou,China

Relationships between nonoptimal temperatures and cardiovascular disease(CVD)mortality have been well documented.However,evidence of the association between temperature variability(TV)and CVD morbidity is limited.This study aimed to quantify the risk and burden of CVD-related hospitalization associated with the magnitude and direction of TV.Data on meteorology and population-based hospitalizations for myocardial infarction(MI)and stroke were collected in Guangzhou,China,from 2013 to 2017.Hourly temperature variability(HTV)was measured as the standard deviation of hourly temperature records over specific exposure days.The direction(upward or downward)of HTV was defined as the average daily mean temperature change relative to that of the previous day during the exposure period.Quasi-Poisson regression was applied to assess the impact of HTV after adjusting for the daily mean temperature,and the hospitalization fractions attributable to HTV were calculated.A 1°C-increase in HTV was significantly associated with a 2.24%and 1.72%increase in hospitalizations for MI and hemorrhagic stroke(HS)at lag 0–1 d,respectively,and a 1.55%increase in hospitalizations for ischemic stroke(IS)at lag 0–3 d.During the study period,5.99%,4.64%,and 4.53%of MI,HS,and IS hospitalizations,respectively,were attributable to HTV.The upward TV exerts acute effects on CVD hospital admissions,whereas the impact of downward TV generally lags.These findings highlight the importance of the magnitude and direction of temperature fluctuations,in addition to the mean level,in assessing the adverse health impacts of temperature variations.

The Impact of Relative Humidity and Atmospheric Pressure on Mortality in Guangzhou, China

Objective Although many studies have examined the effects of ambient temperatures on mortality, little evidence is on health impacts of atmospheric pressure and relative humidity. This study aimed to assess the impacts of atmospheric pressure and relative humidity on mortality in Guangzhou, China. Methods This study included 213,737 registered deaths during 2003-2011 in Guangzhou, China. A quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to assess the effects of atmospheric pressure/relative humidity. Results We found significant effect of low atmospheric pressure/relative humidity on mortality. There was a 1.79% （95% confidence interval： 0.38%-3.22%） increase in non-accidental mortality and a 2.27% （0.07%-4.51%） increase in cardiovascular mortality comparing the 5th and 25th percentile of atmospheric pressure. A 3.97% （0.67%-7.39%） increase in cardiovascular mortality was also observed comparing the 5th and 25th percentile of relative humidity. Women were more vulnerable to decrease in atmospheric pressure and relative humidity than men. Age and education attainment were also potential effect modifiers. Furthermore, low atmospheric pressure and relative humidity increased temperature-related mortality. Conclusion Both low atmospheric pressure and relative humidity are important risk factors of mortality. our findings would be helpful to develop health risk assessment and climate policy interventions that would better protect vulnerable subgroups of the population.

Many breakthroughs in technologies are closely associated with the deep understanding and development of new material platforms.As the main material used in microelectronics,Si also plays a leading role in the development of integrated photonics.The indirect bandgap,absence ofχ(2)nonlinearity and the parasitic nonlinear absorptions at the telecom band of Si imposed technological bottlenecks for further improving the performances and expanding the functionalities of Si microcavities in which the circulating light intensity is dramatically amplified.The past two decades have witnessed the burgeoning of the novel material platforms that are compatible with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor(COMS)process.In particular,the unprecedented optical properties of the emerging materials in the thin film form have resulted in revolutionary progress in microcavity photonics.In this review article,we summarize the recently developed material platforms for integrated photonics with the focus on chip-scale microcavity devices.The material characteristics,fabrication processes and device applications have been thoroughly discussed for the most widely used new material platforms.We also discuss open challenges and opportunities in microcavity photonics,such as heterogeneous integrated devices,and provide an outlook for the future development of integrated microcavities.

Gd_(2)O_(3):Tb^(3+) nanocrystal co-doped with Zn^(2+)and Li^(+) was prepared by the combination of polyol and solid-phase methods.The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),photoluminescence(PL)spectra and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).The results revealed that both Gd_(2)O_(3):Tb^(3+)/Zn^(2+) and Gd_(2)O_(3):Tb^(3+)/Li^(+) had cubic unit structures with a spherical shape,and the fluorescence intensity of the nanoparticles reached a maximum at a doping concentration of0.050 mmol%for Zn^(2+) and 2 mol%for Li^(+),respectively.In addition,the T_(1)/T_(2)(longitudinal/transverse relaxation time)-weighted MRI signals got enhanced due to the increased longitudinal relaxivity(r1)and transverse relaxivity(r2)after the doping by metal ions.Therefore,the materials reported here can be used for fluorescence and MR bimodal imaging,as tracers and for fluorescence detections.

Impact of Heat Wave in 2005 on Mortality in Guangzhou, China

Objective To assess the impact of the heat wave in 2005 on mortality among the residents in Guangzhou and to identify susceptible subpopulations in Guangzhou, China. Methods The data of daily number of deaths and meteorological measures from 2003 to 2006 in Guangzhou were used in this study. Heat wave was defined as 〉7 consecutive days with daily maximum temperature above 35.0 ~C and daily mean temperature above the 97th percentile during the study period. The excess deaths and rate ratio （RR） of mortality in the case period compared with the reference period in the same summer were calculated. Results During the study period, only one heat wave in 2005 was identified and the total number of excess deaths was 145 with an average of 12 deaths per day. The effect of the heat wave on non-accidental mortality （RR=l.23, 95% CI： 1.11-1.37） was found with statistically significant difference. Also, greater effects were observed for cardiovascular mortality （RR=l.34, 95% Cl： 1.13-1.59） and respiratory mortality （RR=I.31, 95% CI： 1.02-1.69）. Females, the elderly and people with lower socioeconomic status were at significantly higher risk of heat wave-associated mortality. Conclusion The 2005 heat wave had a substantial impact on mortality among the residents in Guangzhou, particularly among some susceptible subpopulations. The findings from the present study may provide scientific evidences to develop relevant public health policies and prevention measures aimed at reduction of preventable mortality from heat waves.
