Dual probiotic strains suppress high fructose-induced metabolic syndrome

Cavity noise sensitivity analysis of tire contour design factors and application of contour optimization methodology

Cavity resonance noise of passenger car tires is generated by interacting excitation between a tire structure and the fill gas (air), and generally lies in a frequency range of 200?250 Hz. As such, this noise is strongly perceived and may be a serious source of driver annoyance. Thus, many studies regarding the cavity noise mechanism and its reduction have already been conducted. In this work, a vibro-acoustic coupled analysis was conducted between a tire structure and air cavity. Using this analysis, we can more accurately simulate the tire noise performance in the region of the cavity resonance frequency. An analysis of the effects of variation of tire contour design factors was conducted, using design-of-experiments methods. Finally, a multi-objective optimization was performed using in-house codes to reduce the cavity noise level while minimizing the loss of other performances, such as diminished ride comfort and handling caused by the variations of contour. As a result of this optimization, an optimized contour shape was derived, which satisfied the multi-objective performances.

Severity of ultrasonographic liver steatosis and metabolic syndrome in Korean men and women

AIM：To evaluate the association between the severity of liver steatosis and metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy Korean adults. METHODS： We examined 1022 men and women, aged 30-79 years, who participated in a health screening test. A standard interview, anthropometrics, biochemical studies, and abdominal ultrasonography were conducted for each participant. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ, with a modification for the waist circumference cut-off level. The severity of liver steatosis was evaluated using liver ultrasonography, and serum aspartate aminotransferase（AST）, alanine aminotransferase （ALT）, and γ-glutamyl transferase （γ-GT） levels were determined. RESULTS： Ultrasonographic liver steatosis was strongly associated with metabolic syndrome and common metabolic abnormalities. Compared with people without steatosis, people with mild, moderate, and severe steatosis had adjusted odds ratios for metabolic syndrome of 2.72 （95% CI, 1.01-2.94）, 2.89 （1.75-4.76） and 3.53 （1.25-9.98） in men, and 2.86 （1.64-5.01）, 3.19 （1.80-5.65） and 3.70 （0.82-16.73） in women, respectively. The serum AST level was not associated with metabolic syndrome. The serum ALT and γ-GT levels were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in men but not in women.CONCLUSION： The occurrence of metabolic syndrome shows a stronger association with the severity of ultrasonographic steatosis than with the serum liver enzyme levels. The degree of fatty infiltration detected on ultrasonography can be used as an indicator of liver dysfunction attributable to metabolic abnormalities.

Mechanical properties of Cu matrix composite fabricated by extrusion process

Carbon nanotube （CNT）was applied in various fields for itssuperior electrical, mechanical and thermal characteristics. After composites were fabricated by extrusion processusing ball-milledCu-CNT powders, mechanicalpropertiesofCu-CNT composites according to CNT fraction were reviewed. CNT （1%, 5% and 10%）,Cu （d=100 nm）, zirconia balls （90 g） and ethanol （20mL） were mixed and dispersed for5h at a speed of 500 r/minusing a planetary ball mill. A billet （d=50 mm, length=100 mm） was made with Cu, and the composite powderswerefilled up into billet using the uni-axial press. In the extrusion process, after the billet was heated at 880℃for1h, specimens were produced in the shape of a round bar using the billet by applying a load of 200 t. The composite powdersweremeasured for particle size byparticlesize distributionequipment. Then the specimen surface fabricated by extrusion was observed by SEM. Mechanicalpropertiesmeasured by the indentation equipment increased with increasing CNT content. The yield strength, tensile strength and hardness of theCu–CNTs composites canbeobviously improved.

Improvement of erectile function by Korean red ginseng （Panax ginseng） in a male rat model of metabolic syndrome

The seriousness of metabolic syndrome is not due to the disease itself but its promotion of other diseases, such as erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We investigated the effects of Korean red ginseng （KRG, Panax ginseng） extract on erectile function in a rat model of metabolic syndrome. We divided the rats into three groups： control, metabolic syndrome＋normal saline （N/S） and metabolic syndrome ＋ KRG. To determine the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in all groups, body weight and various biochemical parameters （e.g., blood glucose, insulin, cholesterol） were measured, and the intra-abdominal glucose tolerance test was performed. To investigate penile erection, the peak intracavernosal pressure （ICP）, mean arterial pressure （MAP） and Masson＇s trichrome stain were evaluated. Erectile function was also investigated by measuring the cyclic guanosine monophosphate （cGMP） levels of the corpus cavernosum. We found that the various biochemical parameters and body weight were similar in the metabolic syndrome＋KRG group and the control group, although the values were slightly higher. The peak ICP/MAP ratio of the metabolic syndrome＋N/S group was markedly decreased compared to the other groups. The cGMP level of the corpus cavernosum in the metabolic syndrome＋N/S group was significantly lower than that of the other groups. As demonstrated in this model of metabolic syndrome with erectile dysfunction, KRG may improve erectile function.

EVALUATION OF DUCTILE FRACTURE CRITERIA IN A GENERAL THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRESS STATE CONSIDERING THE STRESS TRIAXIALITY AND THE LODE PARAMETER

This paper is concerned with evaluation of various ductile fracture criteria in a general three-dimensional stress state of stress triaxiality, the Lode parameter and the equiva- lent plastic strain to fracture. Evaluation is carried out by comparing fracture loci constructed by fracture criteria to experimental results of A12024-T351. Comparison demonstrates that the Modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion and a newly proposed criterion provide sufficient predictabil- ity of fracture strain. Moreover, evaluation is emphasized on the predicted cut-off value for stress triaxiality. The evaluation demonstrates that the Cockcroft-Latham, Brozzo, Oh, Ko-huh and the new criteria coupled a reasonable cut-off value for ductile materials.

As an alternative to Li-ion batteries,aqueous Zn batteries have gained attention due to the abundance of Zn metal,low reduction potential(-0.76 V *** hydrogen electrode),and high theoretical capacity(820 mAh g^(-1))of multivalent Zn2+***,the growth of Zn dendrites and the formation of irreversible surface reaction byproducts pose challenges for ensuring a long battery lifespan and ***,the Cu foil coated with a single-walled carbon nanotube(SWCNT)layer using a facile doctor blade casting method is *** SWCNT-coated Cu foil demonstrates a significantly longer battery lifespan compared to the bare Cu in the half-cell *** operando optical microscopy imaging,we are able to provide intuitive evidence that Zn deposition occurs between the carbon nanotube(CNT)coating and Cu substrate,in agreement with the computational ***,with various imaging techniques,the flat morphology and homogeneous distribution of Zn beneath the SWCNT layer are *** addition,the full-cell using CNT-coated Cu exhibits a long cycle life compared to the control group,thereby demonstrating improved electrochemical performance with limited Zn for the cycling process.

Hydrophobic polymer [***(vinylidenfluoride)] layer was coated on polyaniline (PANi) sensor to reduce the problems of *** differences in sensitivity to methanol gas detection in various humidity condition between pure-PANi sensor and coated with poly(vinylidenfluoride) polymer (PVDF) (coated-PANi sensor) were *** the relation between the density of pore,which was coated on the layer of the PANi sensor,and sensitivity was *** fabricate the porous PVDF layer on PANi sensor,poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA),which is water-soluble polymer,was used. Coated-PANi sensor was less affected by humidity compared with pure-PANi *** higher density of pore on PVDF layer led to higher sensitivity.
