Benchmark Computations of the Phase Field Crystal and Functionalized Cahn-Hilliard Equations via Fully Implicit,Nesterov Accelerated Schemes

We introduce a fast solver for the phase field crystal(PFC)and functionalized Cahn-Hilliard(FCH)equations with periodic boundary conditions on a rectangular domain that features the preconditioned Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent(PAGD)*** discretize these problems with a Fourier collocation method in space,and employ various second-order schemes in *** observe a significant speedup with this solver when compared to the preconditioned gradient descent(PGD)*** the PAGD solver,fully implicit,second-order-in-time schemes are not only feasible to solve the PFC and FCH equations,but also do so more efficiently than some semi-implicit schemes in some cases where accuracy issues are taken into *** computations of four different schemes for the PFC and FCH equations are conducted and the results indicate that,for the FCH experiments,the fully implicit schemes(midpoint rule and BDF2 equipped with the PAGD as a nonlinear time marching solver)perform better than their IMEX versions in terms of computational cost needed to achieve a certain *** the PFC,the results are not as conclusive as in the FCH experiments,which,we believe,is due to the fact that the nonlinearity in the PFC is milder nature compared to the FCH *** also discuss some practical matters in applying the *** introduce an averaged Newton preconditioner and a sweeping-friction strategy as heuristic ways to choose good preconditioner *** sweeping-friction strategy exhibits almost as good a performance as the case of the best manually tuned parameters.

The innate immune response to invading viruses is critical for the mounting of protective immunity,in which type I interferons(IFN),for example,IFN-αandβ,are potent effector molecules.1 Most cell types,particularly fibroblasts and epithelial cells,produce IFN-β,whereas hematopoietic cells,notably plasmacytoid dendritic cells,are the predominant sources of IFN-α.IFNs potently stimulate a variety of innate and adaptive immune cells,including macrophages,NK cells and T *** binding of type I IFN to its cognate receptor triggers the activation of the Janus kinase signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway,which results in the transcription of IFNstimulated genes that play key roles in host resistance to viral infections.

Topology optimization of reactive material structures for penetrative projectiles

Recently,reactive materials have been developed for penetrative projectiles to improve impact resistance and energy ***,the design of a reactive material structure,involving shape and size,is challenging because of difficulties such as high non-linearity of impact resistance,manufacturing limitations of reactive materials and high expenses of penetration *** this study,a design optimization methodology for the reactive material structure is developed based on the finite element analysis.A finite element model for penetration analysis is introduced to save the expenses of the *** resistance is assessed through the analysis,and result is calibrated by comparing with experimental *** on the model,topology optimization is introduced to determine shape of the *** design variables and constraints of the optimization are proposed considering the manufacturing limitations,and the optimal shape that can be manufactured by cold spraying is *** on the optimal shape,size optimization is introduced to determine the geometric dimensions of the *** a result,optimal design of the reactive material structure and steel case of the penetrative projectile,which maximizes the impact resistance,is *** the design process proposed in this study,reactive material structures can be designed considering not only mechanical performances but also manufacturing limitations,with reasonable time and cost.

Analysis and optimization of nitrile butadiene rubber sealing mechanism of ball valve

An approach for analyzing and optimizing sealing mechanism of ball valve made of nitrile butadiene rubber(NBR) with finite element method was presented. The Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic material model was chosen to characterize NBR sealing, as it has been recommended in the similar applications. That is, NBR sealing was modeled as incompressible hyperelasticity, as well as the assumption of isotropic flow. The results illustrate the structural pressure and contact pressure on the contact surface, which shows that the NBR sealing mechanism is very suitable for sealing after dimension optimization.

Objective:The effectiveness of adjuvant treatments for resected gallbladder carcinoma(GBC)has remained unclear due to lack of randomized controlled trials;thus,the aim of present study was to evaluate the role of adjuvant treatments,including chemoradiotherapy(CRT)and/or chemotherapy(CTx),in patients with resected ***:A total of 733 GBC patients who received curative-intent surgical resection were identified in a multi-institutional *** 733 patients,372(50.8%)did not receive adjuvant treatment,whereas 215(29.3%)and 146(19.9%)received adjuvant CTx and CRT,*** locoregional recurrence-free survival(LRFS),recurrence-free survival(RFS),and overall survival(OS)of the adjuvant treatment groups were compared according to tumor stage(stage II *** III–IV).Results:In stage II disease(n=381),the 5-year LRFS,RFS,and OS were not significantly different among the no-adjuvant therapy,CTx,and CRT groups,and positive resection margin,presence of perineural invasion,and Nx classification were consistently associated with worse LRFS,RFS,and OS in the multivariate analysis(P<0.05).For stage III–IV(n=352),the CRT group had significantly higher 5-year LRFS,RFS,and OS than the no-adjuvant therapy and CTx groups(67.8%,45.2%,and 56.9%;37.9%,28.8%,and 35.4%;and 45.0%,30.0%,and 45.7%,respectively)(P<0.05).Conclusions:CRT has value as adjuvant treatment for resected GBC with stage III–IV *** study is needed for stage II disease with high-risk features.

Ecological evaluation of marine macroalgal communities on five islands of Korea in the Yellow Sea

Macroalgae have long been used as biological indicators of marine ecosystem health worldwide due to their ecological importance and sensitivity to environmental stress.A number of previous studies have utilized macroalgal communities in monitoring surveys of environmental *** study examined the characteristics and patterns of marine macroalgal communities in the Yellow Sea off the western coast of *** were analyzed for the number of species,biomass,and coverage ratio by macroalgal *** the study period,82 macroalgal species(10 green algae,17 brown algae,and 55 red algae)were identified at the five study sites,with the highest number of species found at Gwanrido and Uido(both containing 41 species)and the lowest at Daeijakdo(27 species).The average biomass(via dry weight)was 98.63 g/m^(2),consisting of green algae(8.39 g/m^(2)),brown algae(35.08 g/m^(2)),and red algae(55.16 g/m^(2)).The dominant macroalgae species in terms of biomass were Corallina pilulifera,Sargassum thunbergii,and Ulva australis in the intertidal zones,and Botryocladia wrightii and Gelidium elegans in the subtidal ***,evenness,and diversity indices based on the biomass of abundant species were 5.08,0.65,and 2.30,respectively,over the entire study *** on the evaluation of the environmental states by the community indices,overall,the Ecological Evaluation Index of macroalgae communities in the study area was marked as“Good-Moderate”,but was determined as“ModerateLow”at several sites during *** results can be a direct approach in the assessment of coastal habitats in which anthropogenic as well as climate change influences persist.

Tailoring surface features and pore structure by carbon spiral fibers to construct the high-strength carbon foams for the fast and cyclic photo-thermal oil absorption

Two key limitations affecting the commercial application of carbon foams for fast clean-up of varied oils are the complex synthesis process and poor mechanical *** this work,an effective method is reported to fabricate the efficient oil-absorbing materials(CSF@MCF)of carbon spiral fibers(CSFs)anchored on melamine carbon foam(MCF)with superior mechanical properties and excellent photothermal *** interwoven CSFs can not only provide extra rigidity but also reduce the stress concentration of the carbon skeleton,which greatly improves the mechanical properties with 6.3 times maximum compression stress and 4.5 times ultimate tensile strength than *** addition,the pure carbon component can reduce the interface resistance and excite the free electrons more easily,thus realizing high-efficiency photothermal conversion in a wide range of *** light irradiation,the CSF@MCF can be quickly heated up to 70℃and achieve ultra-high absorption of crude oil,up to 62 g g_(-1),due to its low density and large absorption ***,the CSF@MCF exhibits impressive absorption stability with persistent superhydrophobicity and a high recovery efficiency of over 85%.Superadding its simple preparation process,low production cost,and excellent acid-alkali resistance,the CSF@MCF shows great commercial potential for effectively absorbing varied oils.

Comparative studies on the binding site of anesthetics to GABA a receptors using in silico docking methods

Although the GABAA receptor(GABAAR)has been proposed as the main action site for sevoflurane,isoflurane,halothane,enflurane,propofol,and benzodiazepines(BZDs),binding of these anesthetics with high-resolution structures of the GABAAR have been rarely examined by comparative docking ***,various combinations of ligands on more GABAARs with various subtypes need to be analyzed to understand the elaborate action mechanism of GABAARs better because some GABAA ligands showed specificity toward the distinct subtypes of the ***:We performed in silico docking analysis to compare the binding modes of sevoflurane,isoflurane,halothane,enflurane,propofol,and BZDs to the GABAAR based on one of the most recently provided 3D *** performed the docking analysis and the affinity-based ranking of the binding ***:Our docking studies revealed that isoflurane,halothane,and enflurane docked in an extracellular domain(ECD)on GABAARs,in contrast to ***:Our results supported a multi-site mechanism for the allosteric modulation of *** was bound to the pore or favored various subsites in the transmembrane domain(TMD).Our result confirmed that different chemically related BZD ligands interact via distinct binding modes rather than by using a common binding mode,as previously suggested.

Comparative outcomes of the pathogen in cultured Jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to follow up periods

AIM:To evaluate the pathogens in cultured Jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to the postoperative periods and to obtain data for the prevention of infection of functional lacrimal stent ***:Totally 71 patients(81 eyes)who underwent the removal of Jones tubes were enrolled in *** the removed Jones tubes were cultured for bacterial and fungal identification and tested for bacterial antibiotic *** results were analyzed according to the duration of the inserted Jones tube after lacrimal bypass ***:Of the 81 eyes,bacteria were isolated from 69 eyes(85.2%)and fungi from 6 eyes(7.4%).Among 69 eyes,40.6% showed Staphylococcus aureus(***),11.6% were Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***).Gram-positive bacteria were isolated more than Gramnegative bacteria,but Gram-negative bacteria showed a higher incidence in the Jones tube implanted for over 10y(P=0.035).The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that 46.4% of *** were resistant to *** terms of antibiotics commonly used in ocular clinical practice,vancomycin was sensitive to *** and Streptococcus pneumoniae(***),amikacin responded to *** and Proteus mirabilis(***).Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(TMP/SMX)was all sensitive to ***,*** and *** except ***:*** is the most commonly found organism in the Jones tube after lacrimal bypass surgery,and 46.4% of them are methicillin-resistant ***(MRSA),sensitive to ***,*** responded with amikacin is dominantly detected in the Jones tubes implanted for more than 10y.

Management of post-liver transplantation biliary stricture inaccessible by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography:A case report

BACKGROUND One challenging scenario in the treatment of biliary stricture is that post-liver transplantation(LT)biliary strictures cannot be accessed using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP).Here,we report such a case that was successfully treated using a novel endoscopic *** SUMMARY A 60-year-old man presented with obstructive jaundice caused by a post-LT biliary *** underwent LT for compensated alcoholic liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular *** investigations unveiled a cholestatic pattern of abnormalities in liver function and a total bilirubin level of 16 mg/*** resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed a stricture extending from the right intrahepatic bile duct into the common hepatic *** postoperative deformities made accessing the ampulla of Vater with a sideviewing duodenoscope *** transhepatic biliary drainage(PTBD)was performed to treat biliary ***,to resolve the stricture completely,a fully covered self-expandable metal stent(FC-SEMS)with a novel proximal retrievable string was deployed into the post-LT biliary stricture through the PTBD *** inserting the stent through the PTBD tract,the stent with the distal string was manually inverted to ensure that the distal part with the string became the proximal part for later endoscopic *** 6 mo,the FC-SEMS was successfully removed without complications,as the string was pulled out using a forward-viewing *** Deployment and endoscopic removal of an FC-SEMS with a novel proximal string through the PTBD tract may be a viable option for treating post-LT biliary strictures that are inaccessible by ERCP.
