The apple(Malus domestica)is one of the world's most commercially important perennial crops and its improvement has been the focus of human effort for thousands of ***,we genetically characterise over 1000 apple accessions from the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA)germplasm collection using over 30,000 singlenucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs).We con fi rm the close genetic relationship between modern apple cultivars and their primary progenitor species,Malus sieversii from Central Asia,and fi nd that cider apples derive more of their ancestry from the European crabapple,Malus sylvestris,than do dessert *** determine that most of the USDA collection is a large complex pedigree:over half of the collection is interconnected by a series of fi rst-degree *** addition,15%of the accessions have a fi rst-degree relationship with one of the top 8 cultivars produced in the *** the exception of‘Honeycrisp',the top 8 cultivars are interconnected to each other via pedigree *** cultivars‘Golden Delicious'and‘Red Delicious'were found to have over 60 fi rst-degree relatives,consistent with their repeated use by apple *** detected a signature of intense selection for red skin and provide evidence that breeders also selected for increased fi *** results suggest that Americans are eating apples largely from a single family tree and that the apple's future improvement will bene fi t from increased exploitation of its tremendous natural genetic diversity.

Magnetotactic bacteria have been the only known magnetoreceptive microorganisms for *** if the existence of magnetotactic protists was suggested in 1986,this is only 30 years later that magnetotaxis was extended to the domain of Eukaryota,thanks to the characterization of magnetotactic symbiotic assemblies composed of a flagellated protist and bacteria biomineralizing magnetic *** mutualistic ectosymbiosis relies on a collective magnetotaxis coupled to a hydrogen-based *** new form of cooperation challenges our view of magnetic biomineralization in prokaryotes and magnetoreception in *** this review,we present how magnetosymbiosis was discovered and how cooperation ***,we discuss the future research and the new perspectives such discovery brought to the field of magnetotaxis.

Comparative analysis of empirical and deep learning models for ionospheric sporadic E layer prediction

Sporadic E(Es)layers in the ionosphere are characterized by intense plasma irregularities in the E region at altitudes of 90-130 *** they can significantly influence radio communications and navigation systems,accurate forecasting of Es layers is crucial for ensuring the precision and dependability of navigation satellite *** this study,we present Es predictions made by an empirical model and by a deep learning model,and analyze their differences comprehensively by comparing the model predictions to satellite RO measurements and ground-based ionosonde *** deep learning model exhibited significantly better performance,as indicated by its high coefficient of correlation(r=0.87)with RO observations and predictions,than did the empirical model(r=0.53).This study highlights the importance of integrating artificial intelligence technology into ionosphere modelling generally,and into predicting Es layer occurrences and characteristics,in particular.

The Current State of Kidney Transplantation in Kenya: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Directions

Kenya, a lower-middle-income country in East Africa, faces a rising burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with an estimated 12,500 individuals suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Renal transplantation—the preferred treatment option for ESRD, remains underutilized. Since the first transplant in 1978, seven centers have been established, with 829 transplants performed by 2022. Living-related renal transplants (LRRT) dominate, while deceased donor renal transplantation (DDRT) is yet to be implemented. Recent data show improved outcomes, with one-year graft survival rates up to 96%, but challenges such as acute rejection rates (32.8%) and limited donor outcome data persist. Barriers include high costs, limited insurance coverage, inadequate laboratory infrastructure, and a transplant workforce shortage. Efforts to establish DDRT programs are underway but are hampered by the absence of organ procurement systems and insufficient laboratory capabilities. Future priorities include reducing costs and expanded insurance coverage for transplant care. Investments in laboratory infrastructure, local tissue typing, and surgical training are essential. Strengthening international collaborations and public education campaigns can improve donor pools and transplantation access. Strategic policy reforms and resource allocation are vital to scaling up Kenya’s kidney transplant program and addressing the unmet needs of its ESRD population.

Protecting miners from coal bursts during development above historic mine workings in Harlan County,KY

In order to reach a large,untapped reserve of high-quality coal,D8 Cloverlick Mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 600 m deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain,Kentucky’s highest peak.D8 Cloverlick Mine was extracting the Owl seam,but the corridor’s route lay approximately 20 m above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby)*** to the concern,three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam *** of the old workings seemed to indicate that the underlying C–seam had been fully ***,two of the coal bursts had occurred above areas where the C–Seam was also shown as mined *** Safety and Health Administration(MSHA)Technical Support therefore investigated the records of past mining to better understand the old mine *** conditions observed in current Owl seam workings were also compared with the maps of the old C–seam *** study concluded that the presence of hazardous underlying remnants could not be ruled *** mitigate the burst risk,D8 Cloverlick Mine adopted a strategy of stress probe drilling.A self-propelled coal drill was used to auger 11.5-m-long,small diameter holes in advance of *** each hole was drilled,the cuttings were measured to detect the presence of highly stressed *** the crossing was successfully completed without incident.
