Background:We examined the comparative associations between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLd)definitions with risk of developing chronic kidney disease(CKd)and abnormal ***:We conducted a cohort study of 214,145 Korean adults with normal kidney function at baseline who underwent liver *** were further subdivided into no steatotic liver disease(no-SLd),NAFLd-only,MASLd-only,both NAFLd and MASLd,and SLd not categorized as NAFLd or MASLd *** proportional hazards models were used to analyze the risk of incident CKd and ***:Compared with either the no-NAFLd or no-MASLd groups,the NAFLd and MASLd groups were associated with a higher risk of incident CKd(NAFLd:adjusted hazard ratio(HR),1.18[95%CI,1.01-1.38];MASLd:adjusted HR,1.21[95%CI,1.04-1.39]).Among the five subgroups,both NAFLd and MASLd group had the strongest association with risk of incident CKd(adjusted HR,1.21[95%CI,1.04-1.42]).The MASLd-only group had the strongest association with incident abnormal albuminuria,with an adjusted HR comparable to that of the both NAFLd and MASLd group(adjusted HR 1.96[95%CI,1.44-2.67]for the MASLd-only,and adjusted HR 1.98[95%CI,1.58-2.49]for the both NAFLd and MASLd group versus the no-SLd group).The NAFLd-only group was not independently associated with risk of CKd or abnormal ***:These findings suggest that MASLd definition identifies individuals at high risk of developing incident CKd or abnormal albuminuria better than NAFLd definition.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a complex disorder that consists of upper airway obstruction, chronic intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation. OSA is well known to be associated with hypoxia, insulin resistance and glucose intolerance, and these factors can occur in the presence or absence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Although it is well established that insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and obesity occur frequently with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLd), it is now becoming apparent that hypoxia might also be important in the development of NAFLd, and it is recognized that there is increased risk of NAFLd with OSA. This review discusses the association between OSA, NAFLd and cardiovascular disease, and describes the potential role of hypoxia in the development of NAFLd with OSA.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)has become the most common cause of liver disease in many parts of the world,causing considerable liver-related(steatohepatitis,cirrhosis,liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma)and extra-hepatic morbidity and mortality(mainly cardiovascular disease,chronic kidney disease or certain types of extra-hepatic cancers).Recently,based on insights gained from the past two decades,an international panel of experts from 22 countries has taken the initiative to propose a new name and definition for NAFLd in adult individuals-that is,metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver *** proposed change in nomenclature is not simply a semantic revision,but may facilitate improved diagnosis of this common liver disease for health promotion,case identification,patient awareness,ongoing clinical trials and health services *** aim of this commentary is to discuss the proposal for a change in nomenclature of this common and burdensome liver disease and to address the“pros and cons”for changing the name according to the perspective of different stakeholders.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common liver-related complication seen in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)(1).NASH is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2dM)but it has also been apparent for a number of years that T2dM is associated with an increased risk of HCC independent of the presence of NASH(2).A 2006 meta-analysis of retrospective cohort studies and case-control studies demonstrated an association between T2dM and an increased risk of HCC(3).International guidelines advocate surveillance for HCC in patients with NASH who have progressed to cirrhosis(4).An important clinical question is whether T2dM confers an increased risk of HCC once patients with NASH have progressed to *** a recent study by Yang and colleagues(5),the authors reported strong evidence that T2dM is an independent risk factor for HCC in patients with NASH-related *** and colleagues performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively registered research dataset of patients with NASH-related cirrhosis.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)has emerged as a public health problem of epidemic proportions *** clinical and epidemiological evidence indicates that NAFLd is not only associated with liver-related morbidity and mortality but also with an increased risk of coronary heart disease(CHd),abnormalities of cardiac function and structure(e.g.,left ventricular dysfunction and hypertrophy,and heart failure),valvular heart disease(e.g.,aortic valve sclerosis)and arrhythmias(e.g.,atrial fibrillation).Experimental evidence suggests that NAFLd itself,especially in its more severe forms,exacerbates systemic/hepatic insulin resistance,causes atherogenic dyslipidemia,and releases a variety of pro-inflammatory,pro-coagulant and pro-fibrogenic mediators that may play important roles in the pathophysiology of cardiac and arrhythmic ***,these findings suggest that patients with NAFLd may benefit from more intensive surveillance and early treatment interventions to decrease the risk for CHd and other cardiac/arrhythmic *** purpose of this clinical review is to summarize the rapidly expanding body of evidence that supports a strong association between NAFLd and cardiovascular,cardiac and arrhythmic complications,to briefly examine the putative biological mechanisms underlying this association,and to discuss some of the current treatment options that may influence both NAFLd and its related cardiac and arrhythmic complications.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLd),previously termed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease,affecting around 30%of the world’s adults(1).MAFLd encompasses a spectrum of liver conditions,ranging from simple steatosis to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis(MASH),which can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)(2,3).

A history of cigarette smoking is present in approximately 40%of patients with chronic liver diseases and there is considerable interest in better understanding if and how cigarette smoking may affect chronic liver diseases[1].Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)is currently the most common cause of chronic liver disease,affecting up to 30%of the world’s adults[2].Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development and progression of NAFLd,and increasing evidence shows that smoking is associated with more severe liver disease in NAFLd[3,4].despite convincing evidence of this association between smoking and liver disease,the underlying mechanism(s)linking smoking with NAFLd is still poorly understood.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019(COVId-19),caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),has attracted increasing worldwide *** of liver damage or dysfunction(mainly characterized by moderately elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase lev-els)have been reported among patients with ***,it is currently uncertain whether the COVId-19-related liver damage/dysfunction is due mainly to the viral infection per se or other coexisting conditions,such as the use of potentially hepatotoxic drugs and the coexistence of sys-temic inflammatory response,respiratory distress syndrome-induced hypoxia,and multiple organ *** on the current evidence from case reports and case series,this review article focuses on the demographic and clinical characteristics,potential mechanisms,and treatment options for COVId-19-related liver *** review also describes the geo-graphical and demographic distribution of COVId-19-related liver dysfunction,as well as possible underlying mechanisms linking COVId-19 to liver dysfunction,in order to facilitate future drug development,prevention,and control measures for COVId-19.
