In the last issue,two case reports separately present examples of the extremely rare and complex congenital heart diseases that show concordant atrioventricular connections to the L-looped ventricles in the presence of situs *** cases highlight that the relationship between the two ventricles within the ventricular mass is not always harmonious with the given atrioventricular *** disharmony between the connections and relationships requires careful assessment of the three basic facets of cardiac building blocks,namely their morphology,the relationship of their component parts,and their connections with the adjacent segments.3D imaging and printing can now facilitate an otherwise difficult diagnosis in such complex *** of either the 3D images or the models permit accurate assessment of the ventricular topologic pattern by creating the right ventricular en-face septal view,thus facilitating placement of the observer’s *** we now emphasize,an alternative approach,which might prove more attractive to imagers,is to rotate the ventricular mass to provide the ventricular apical view,thus permitting determination of the ventricular relationship without using the hands.

Sinus venosus defects include two varieties,superior and inferior sinus venosus *** superior sinus venosus defect is characterized by abnormal communication between two closely related venoatrial structures:1)the normally positioned superior vena cava-right atrium complex and 2)the right pulmonary vein-left atrium complex that is displaced leftward,forward and *** sinus venosus defects primarily involve the inferior vena cava-right atrial junction while the right pulmonary vein-left atrial junction can also be *** of the rarity and wide variation of the defects,the morphological characterization of sinus venosus defects is inconsistent among investigators and often *** imaging technologies with high spatial and temporal resolutions have allowed accurate and detailed assessment of the pathological anatomy in larger numbers of *** this pictorial essay,we revisit the established and controversial features of the sinus venous defects using twodimensional(2D)and three-dimensional(3D)images obtained by magnetic resonance(MR)or computed tomography(CT)with brief discussion on imaging and treatment strategies.

The inflection point is an important feature of sigmoidal height-diameter(H-D)*** is often cited as one of the properties favoring sigmoidal model ***,there are very few studies analyzing the inflection points of H-D *** goals of this study were to theoretically and empirically examine the behaviors of inflection points of six common H-D models with a regional *** six models were the Wykoff(WYK),Schumacher(SCH),Curtis(CUR),HossfeldⅣ(HOS),von Bertalanffy-Richards(VBR),and Gompertz(GPz)*** models were first fitted in their base forms with tree species as random effects and were then expanded to include functional traits and spatial *** distributions of the estimated inflection points were similar between the two-parameter models WYK,SCH,and CUR,but were different between the threeparameter models HOS,VBR,and *** produced some of the largest inflection *** and VBR produced concave H-D curves without inflection points for 12.7%and 39.7%of the tree *** species or decreasing shade tolerance resulted in larger inflection *** trends in the estimated inflection points of HOS and VBR were entirely opposite across the ***,HOS could produce concave H-D curves for portions of the *** on the studied behaviors,the choice between two-parameter models may not *** recommend comparing seve ral three-parameter model forms for consistency in estimated inflection points before deciding on *** sigmoidal models to have inflection points does not necessarily mean that they will produce fitted curves with *** study highlights the need to integrate analysis of inflection points into modeling H-D relationships.

In this study,dynamic responses of two buildings connected by viscoelastic dampers under bidirectional excitations are extensively *** two buildings are a 10-story building and a 16-story building,with the shorter building on the *** dampers are installed at all fl oors of the shorter *** of motion are formulated using a fractional derivative model to represent the viscoelastic *** cases are considered with mass eccentricities at 0,10% and-10% with respect to the dimensions of the *** responses of the buildings are numerically predicted at different damper *** simulation results indicated that the maximum horizontal responses of the buildings without eccentricities are signifi cantly ***,torsional effects are adversely *** asymmetric buildings,the effectiveness of the connecting dampers is affected by building *** a result,mass eccentricities must be taken into account in damper *** compared with vibrations induced by unidirectional excitations,bidirectional excitations can increase the responses of coupled asymmetric *** addition,installing dampers only at the top fl oor of the shorter building may cause a sudden change in lateral stiffness of the taller ***,the story shear envelopes of the taller building are changed.

Background Since Macao＇s return of sovereignty to China in December 1999, the life style of Macao residents has changed. The aim of this study was to investigate changes of death patterns in Macao residents from 1986 to 2006 in order to identify the trends and patterns of major public health problems, which could provide the guidance for developing public health policies. Methods A retrospective study was conducted for this investigation. Research data were collected from official websites and statistical yearbooks and classified by the International Classification of Diseases （ICD）-9. Results It was observed that mortality from the three major causes of （1） infectious, maternal and childhood diseases, （2） chronic non-communicable diseases, and （3） injury and poisoning were 17.7, 298.2 and 26.0 per 100 000, respectively. The largest decrease in death rate over the 21-year study-period was from infectious, maternal and childhood diseases （62.5%）. The highest mortality rate was ischemic heart diseases （37.0%）. The largest increase in mortality rate was lung cancer （46.9%）. Conclusions Mortality rate of Macao residents progressively decreased, but the constituent ratio of death from chronic non-communicable diseases was increasing. The mortality rate of lung cancer was clearly ascending, so emphasis should be Dut on tertiarv prevention in future.
