Repeated hydrogen peroxide dosing briefly reduces cyanobacterial blooms and microcystin while increasing fecal bacteria indicators in a eutrophic pond

This study explored the effects of H_(2)O_(2)on Cyanobacteria and non-target microbes using fluorometry,microscopy,flow cytometry,and high throughput DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene during a series of mesocosm and whole-ecosystem experiments in a eutrophic pond in NY,*** addition of H_(2)O_(2)(8 mg/L)significantly reduced Cyanobacteria concentrations during a majority of experiments(66%;6 of 9)and significantly increased eukaryotic green and unicellular brown algae in 78%and 45%of experiments,*** heterotrophic bacteria declined significantly following H_(2)O_(2)addition in all experiments,bacteria indicative of potential fecal contamination(Escherichia coli,Enterococcus,fecal coliform bacteria)consistently and significantly increased in response to H_(2)O_(2),evidencing a form of‘pollution swapping’.H_(2)O_(2)more effectively reduced Cyanobacteria in enclosed mesocosms compared to whole-ecosystem *** whole-pond H_(2)O_(2)applications over a twoyear period temporarily reduced cyanobacterial levels but never reduced concentrations below bloom thresholds and populations always rebounded in two weeks or *** bacterial phyla of Cyanobacteria,Actinobacteria,and Planctomycetes were the most negatively impacted by H_(2)O_(2).microcystis was always reduced by H_(2)O_(2),as was the toxin microcystin,but microcystis remained dominant even after repeated H_(2)O_(2)*** H_(2)O_(2)favored the growth of eukaryotic algae over potentially harmful Cyanobacteria,the inability of H_(2)O_(2)to end cyanobacterial blooms in this eutrophic waterbody suggests it is a non-ideal mitigation approach in high biomass ecosystems and should be used judiciously due to potential negative impacts on non-target organisms and promotion of bacteria indicative of fecal contamination.

Effect of slab width on choice of appropriate casting speed in steel production

In steel continuous casting(CC),the choice of the appropriate speed at which the slab is cast can be influenced by many different factors and *** the slab thickness seems to have the biggest impact,other features like the slab width have been consistently *** fact,the slab width practically limits the casting speed via the mass flow constraint which governs the input and output balance at the ***,we present a case study that aims at analyzing steel production data from the perspective of casting speed *** studying the speed fluctuations of an industrial CC machine,we identify a strategic regime change toward a stricter consideration of the mass flow *** regime change manifests itself in a significant increase in the correlation between the actual casting speed and the maximal speed associated with the mass flow *** the surface,taking greater account of the input and output balance at the tundish has reduced the productivity of the continuous caster;however,one can argue that the lessened yield is compensated by a diminished risk of eventual slab *** the perspective of this trade-off,we establish a visualization technique that enables us to pinpoint the boundary beyond which one strategic regime becomes economically more advantageous than the other.

Engineering oxygen vacancy formation and distribution is a powerful route for controlling the oxygen sublattice evolution that affects diverse functional *** controlling of the oxygen vacancy formation process is particularly important for inducing topotactic phase transitions that occur by transformation of the oxygen *** we demonstrate an epitaxial nanocomposite approach for exploring the spatial control of topotactic phase transition from a pristine perovskite phase to an oxygen vacancy-ordered brownmillerite(Bm)phase in a model oxide La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)mnO_(3)(LSmO).Incorporating a minority phase NiO in LSmO films creates ultrahigh density of vertically aligned epitaxial interfaces that strongly influence the oxygen vacancy formation and distribution in *** structural characterizations reveal strong interactions between NiO and LSmO across the epitaxial interfaces leading to a topotactic phase transition in LSmO accompanied by significant morphology evolution in *** the NiO nominal ratio as a single control parameter,we obtain intermediate topotactic nanostructures with distinct distribution of the transformed LSmO-Bm phase,which enables systematic tuning of magnetic and electrical transport *** use of self-assembled heterostructure interfaces by the epitaxial nanocomposite platform enables more versatile design of topotactic phase structures and correlated functionalities that are sensitive to oxygen vacancies.

Sediment provenance studies commonly utilize isotopic signatures to resolve detrital mineral sources and ***,non-unique ages and geochemical characteristics across geographically distinct crystalline source regions can lead to significant ambiguities in mineral provenance *** ambiguity is apparent in southern Australia’s Cenozoic Eucla Basin,which hosts world-class heavy mineral sand ***,new Hf isotope data are provided from four heavy mineral prospects(N=8,n=844[N=samples,n=grains]).Zircon grain shape data are also presented for a suite of detrital Eucla Basin samples(N=22,n=35,604)and the basin’s underlying basement,the Coompana Province(N=13,n=824).The data are integrated with published detrital and non-detrital primary zircon data to investigate the efficacy of grain shape analysis to better resolve the basin’s mineral *** Hf isotope compositions indicate a primary mesoproterozoic juvenile source for zircon melts(~1250-1000 ma,-2.5~+5)with additional contributions from a range of juvenile to evolved late Archean to Phanerozoic-aged zircon bearing magmas(-28.0+11).U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotopes are incapable of differentiating mesoproterozoic-aged source rocks bounding the region for the majority of heavy mineral deposits analyzed as potential sources express overlapping crystallization ages and similarities in Hf-isotope ***,distinct zircon grain shapes(i.e.,perimeter,major axis and circularity)facilitate improved differentiation across these mesoproterozoic *** of U-Pb age,Hf isotope and shape data implicate the underlying madura and Coompana provinces as dominant sediment sources for Eucla Basin detritus aged~1400-1000 *** lack of direct sediment pathways between the underlying basement provinces and placer sediments analyzed demonstrates the significance of zircon reworking from intermediate sedimentary basins in the formation of the economically significa

Poroelastic solution of a wellbore in a swelling rock with non-hydrostatic stress field

The stress distribution around a circular borehole has been studied extensively. The existing analytical poroelastic solutions, however, often neglect the complex interactions between the solid and fluid that can significantly affect the stress solution. This is important in unconventional gas reservoirs such as coalbeds and shale formations. In order to address this limitation, this paper presents the development of a poroelastic solution that takes into account the effect of gas sorption-induced strain. The solution considers drainage of the reservoir fluid through a vertical wellbore in an isotropic, homogenous,poroelastic rock with non-hydrostatic in situ stress field. The sorption-induced shrinkage of coal is modelled using a Langmuir-type curve which relates the volumetric change to the gas pressure. The redistributed stress field around the wellbore after depletion is found by applying Biot’s definition of effective stress and Airey’s stress functions, which leads to a solution of the inhomogeneous Biharmonic equation. Two sets of boundary conditions were considered in order to simulate the unsupported cavity(open-hole) and supported cavity(lined-hole) cases. The implementation was verified against a numerical solution for both open-hole and lined-hole cases. A comparative study was then conducted to show the significance of the sorption-induced shrinkage in the stress distribution. Finally, a parametric study analysed the sensitivity of the solution to different poroelastic parameters. The results demonstrate that the developed solution is a useful tool that can be employed alongside complex flow models in order to conduct efficient, field-scale coupled hydro-mechanical simulations, especially when the stressdependent permeability of the reservoir is of concern.
