Cation exchange for mercury and cadmium of xanthated,sulfonated,activated and non-treated subbituminous coal,commercial activated carbon and commercial synthetic resin:effect of pre-oxidation on xanthation of subbituminous coal

A subbituminous coal was oxidized with air at 150℃on a fixed bed for 4 h and xanthated with carbondisulfide in a basic solution,at 30 or 5-10℃.This xanthated coal was evaluated for the removal of Hg^(2+)and Cd^(2+)from 7,000 mg/L aqueous solutions;metal concentrations were detemmined by atomic absorption *** ionexchange of the xanthated coal was compared against those of the original subbituminous coal,a sulfonated subbituminouscoal,activated carbon,commercial activated carbon,and commercial synthetic *** commercial synthetic resinshowed the highest exchange capacity(concentration factor 98%)followed by the xanthated coal(concentration factor 96%).The retention of cadmium on the sulfonated subbituminous coal was lower(exchange capacity 0.56 meq/g)thanthat of xanthated coals(1.85±0.09 meq/g).Our xanthated coal showed a better Cd^(2+)removal(8l%o against 15%)than anon preoxidized 40-h-xanthated coal,which shows that oxidation of coal increased the amount of oxygenated groups whichenhanced xanthation.

Synthesis and characterization of nano-hydroxyapatite added with magnesium obtained by wet chemical precipitation

Biogenic hydroxyapatites from mammalian bones naturally contain traces of ions, like mg, which play a vital role in the bone remodeling process. In this way, synthetic hydroxyapatites should include this kind of mineral. In this work, hydroxyapatite added with mg was synthesized by wet precipitation using（NH;）H;PO;, Ca（NO;）;.4 H;O,and mg（NO;）;.6 H;O（0, 0.032, 0.061, and 0.123 m）. Inductively coupled plasma and X-ray diffraction evidenced the mg inclusion in the hydroxyapatite lattice in the same levels reported for natural hydroxyapatites. The calcination at 600℃ was performed to remove the reaction by-products, but it also gave rise to physicochemical changes as the coalescence and crystals recrystallization. It produced, in turn, an improvement in the crystalline quality, according to Raman analysis. Despite those physicochemical changes, all the samples remained nanometric according to scanning electron microscopy imaging.

Preliminary identification of earthquake triggered multi-hazard and risk in Pleret Sub-District(Yogyakarta,Indonesia)

Yogyakarta is one of the large cities in Central Java,located on Java Island,*** city,and the Pleret sub-district,where the study has taken place,is prone to earthquake hazards,because it is close to several seismically active zones,such as the Sunda megathrust and the active fault known as the Opak *** a devastating earthquake of 2006,the population of the Pleret sub-district has increased ***,the housing demand has increased,and so is the pace of low-cost housing that does not meet earthquake-safety requirements,and furthermore are often located on unstable *** local alluvial material covering a jigsaw of unstable blocks and complex slope is conditions that can amplify the negative impacts of *** this context,this study is aiming to assess the multi-hazards and risks of earthquakes and related secondary hazards such as ground liquefaction,and coseismic *** achieve this,we used geographic information systems and remote sensing methods supplemented with outcrop study and existing seismic data to derive shear-strain *** results have revealed the presence of numerous uncharted active faults with movements visible from imagery and *** that the middle part of the study area has a complex geological structure,indicated by many unchartered faults in the *** this newly mapped blocks combined with shear strain data,we reassessed the collapse probability of buildings that reach level>0.75 near the Opak River,in central Pleret *** the buildings and from population distribution,we could determine that the highest risk was during nighttime as the buildings susceptible to fall are predominantly housing *** secondary hazards follow a slightly different distribution with a concentration of risks in the West.

Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabling medical condition generally caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial trauma is accompanied by a set of biological mechanisms directed to ameliorate neural damage but also exacerbate initial damage(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also systemic consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after SCI,explaining the progression and detrimental consequences related to this ***(PNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and explore the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a *** initial traumatic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and multisystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and *** the present review,we will explore the most important local and systemic consequences of SCI from a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how all these mechanisms are ***,potential clinical approaches derived from this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim to develop integrative therapies to maximize the clinical management of these patients.

A generalization of the half-normal distribution

In this paper we introduce an extension of the half-normal distribution in order to model a great variety of non-negative data. Its hazard rate function can be decreasing or increasing, depending on its parameters. Some properties of this new distribution are presented. For example, we give a general expression for the moments and a stochastic representation. Also, the cumulative distribution function, the hazard rate function, the survival function and the quantile function can be easily evaluated. maximum likelihood estimators can be computed by using numerical procedures. Finally, a real-life dataset has been presented to illustrate its applicability.

Assessing risks from mining-induced ground movements near gas wells

The proliferation of unconventional gas well development in the Northern Appalachian coalfields has raised a number of mine safety *** wells,which extract gas from deep shale formations,are characterized by gas volumes and pressures that are significantly higher than those observed at many conventional *** gas is composed largely of methane as well as other *** of planned and actively producing wells penetrate protective coal pillars or barriers within active mine boundaries,including chain pillars located between longwall *** released from a well damaged by mining-induced ground movements could pose a risk to miners by flowing into the mine *** mining-induced ground movements that may cause well damage include conventional subsidence,non-conventional subsidence(*** plane slip),pillar failure,and floor *** paper describes the known risk factors for each of the four failure *** includes a framework that can guide the risk assessment process when mining takes place near gas or oil wells.
