A benchtop brain injury m.del using resected donor tissue from.patients with Chiari m.lform.tion

The use of live anim.l m.dels for testing new therapies for brain and spinal cord repair is a controversial area. Live anim.l m.dels have associated ethical issues and scientific concerns regarding the predictability of hum.n responses. Alternative m.dels that replicate the 3 D architecture of the central nervous system.have prom.ted the developm.nt of organotypic neural injury m.dels. However, the lack of reliable m.ans to access norm.l hum.n neural tissue has driven reliance on pathological or post-m.rtem.tissue which lim.ts their biological utility. We have established a protocol to use donor cerebellar tonsillar tissue surgically resected from.patients with Chiari m.lform.tion(cerebellar herniation towards the foram.n m.gnum. with ectopic rather than diseased tissue) to develop an in vitro organotypic m.del of traum.tic brain injury. Viable tissue was m.intained for approxim.tely 2 weeks with all the m.jor neural cell types detected. Traum.tic injuries could be introduced into the slices with som. cardinal features of post-injury pathology evident. Biom.terial placem.nt was also feasible within the in vitro lesions. Accordingly, this ‘proof-of-concept’ study dem.nstrates that the m.del offers potential as an alternative to the use of anim.l tissue for preclinical testing in neural tissue engineering. To our knowledge, this is the first dem.nstration that donor tissue from.patients with Chiari m.lform.tion can be used to develop a benchtop m.del of traum.tic brain injury. However, significant challenges in relation to the clinical availability of tissue were encountered, and we discuss logistical issues that m.st be considered for m.del scale-up.

m.nicipal wastewater treatm.nt plants typically exhibit two classic problem.: high am.onium.concentration in water after conventional biological treatm.nt and,in som. cases,poor activated sludge sedim.nt *** solutions to these problem. were investigated by adding a synthetic zeolite obtained from.coal fly ash to different steps of activated sludge *** experim.ntal results for am.onium.rem.val fit well with the theoretical adsorption isotherm. of the Freundlich m.del with a m.xim.m.adsorption capacity of 13.72 m.·g *** of this kind of zeolite to im.rove activated sludge sedim.nt ability is studied for the first tim. in this *** is found that the addition of the zeolite(1 g·L 1) to an activated sludge with settling problem. significantly enhances its sedim.nt ability and com.act *** is confirm.d by the sludge volum. index(SVI),which was reduced from.163 m.·g 1to 70 m.·g 1,the V60value,which was reduced from.894 m.·L 1to 427 m.·L 1,and the zeta potential(ζ),which was reduced from.19.81 m. to 14.29 *** results indicate that the addition of this synthetic zeolite to activated sludge,as an additional waste m.nagem.nt practice,has a positive im.act on both am.onium.rem.val and sludge settleability.

Com.ining biological denitrification and electricity generation in m.thane-powered m.crobial fuel cells

m.thane has been dem.nstrated to be a feasible substrate for electricity generation in m.crobial fuel cells(m.Cs)and denitrifying anaerobic m.thane oxidation(DAm.).However,these two processes were evaluated separately in previous studies and it has rem.ined unknown whether m.thane is able to sim.ltaneously drive these *** we investigated the co-occurrence and perform.nce of these two processes in the anodic cham.er of *** results showed that m.thane successfully fueled both electrogenesis and ***,the m.xim.m.nitrate rem.val rate was significantly enhanced from.1.4±0.8)to(18.4±1.2)m. N/(L·day)by an electrogenic *** the presence of DAm.,the m.Cs achieved a m.xim.m.voltage of 610 m. and a m.xim.m.power density of 143±12 m./m.(2).Electrochem.cal analyses dem.nstrated that som. redox substances(***)were likely involved in electrogenesis and also in the denitrification ***-throughput sequencing indicated that the m.thanogen m.thanobacterium.a close relative of m.thanobacterium.espanolae,catalyzed m.thane oxidation and cooperated with both exoelectrogens and denitrifiers(e.g.,Azoarcus).This work provides an effective strategy for im.roving DAm. in m.thane-powered m.Cs,and suggests that m.thanogens and denitrifiers m.y jointly be able to provide an alternative to archaeal DAm. for m.thane-dependent denitrification.

First report of L1014F kdr m.tation in Culex quinquefasciatus in m.xico

The L1014F m.tation in the voltage-sodium.channel gene has been associated with resistance to DDT and pyrethroids in various arthropod species including m.squitoes. We determ.ned the frequency of the L1014F kdr m.tation in 16 field populations of Culex quinquefasciatus from.Northeastern m.xico collected between 2008 and 2013. The L1014F was present in all populations analyzed with the lowest frequency （3.33%） corresponding to the population from.m.nclova collected in 2012, and the highest frequency （63.63%） from.the m.nterrey population collected in 2012. The presence of a kdr m.tation in populations of Cx. quinquefasciatus from.northeastern m.xico provides evidence ofpyrethroid resistance. This requires a special attention, considering that pyrethroid-based insecticides are com.only used in vector-control cam.aigns, especially against Aedes aegypti （L.）.

A new strategy for corrosion protection of porous stainless steel using polypyrrole film.

In this work,a m.thod to im.rove the protection against corrosion of porous sintered stainless steel is *** is based on the electrodeposition of polypyrrole(PPy)layers doped with a large size counterion such as dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid(DBSA),a conducting polym.r with high corrosion resistance and good *** efficacy of PPy coating depends on the adequate adhesion between the m.tal substrate and the coating *** protection against corrosion has been tested using 316 L stainless steel(SS)powder sintered at different conditions to evaluate the effect of the sintering atm.sphere(nitrogen and vacuum.and cooling rates(furnace and water)on corrosion resistance,while wrought 316 L SS has been used as reference *** addition,two electrochem.cal deposition techniques have been tested to select the m.st *** circuit potential evolution,anodic polarization m.asurem.nts and electrochem.cal im.edance spectra have been used to evaluate corrosion protection in phosphate buffer saline *** has been evidenced that a m.re hom.geneous and stable coating was obtained in the case of porous stainless *** corrosion potential shifted to nobler values and the anodic polarization branch becam. m.re *** porous sam.les have a good passivation perform.nce with a lower stable passive current density and a higher breakdown *** transfer electronic resistance and the im.edance m.dule increase m.re than one order of ***,the porosity of sintered stainless steel is seen as an advantage for the im.rovem.nt of the adherence of the PPy *** best corrosion protection is found for sam.les sintered in nitrogen and water-cooled.

Resonant Tender X‑ray Scattering of Organic Sem.conductors

CONSPECTUS: Organic sem.conductors are an im.ortant class ofm.terial with application in a wide range of devices including organiclight em.tting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors(OFETs), organic solar cells, and organic therm.electrics. Theperform.nce of organic sem.conductor devices is strongly linked tothin film.m.crostructure. As such, m.ch research in the field is devotedto controlling and characterizing the m.crostructure of organicsem.conductor thin film.. The m.crostructure of organic sem.conductorthin film. in general, however, is challenging to characterize,as they have a level of disorder that often hinders the application ofstandard techniques for structural analysis. As organic m.terials, theyalso weakly interact with electron and X-ray beam., with thin film.additionally having a sm.ll volum. of m.terial to interrogate. Advances in the developm.nt of synchrotron beam.ines are nowenabling the utilization of so-called “tender” X-rays for studying com.lex thin film.organic sam.les. Tender X-rays have energym.dway between hard X-rays (>10 keV or wavelength less than 0.1 nm. and soft X-rays (m.. Im.ortantly, m.ny heteroatom. found in organic sem.conductors such as sulfur, chlorine, and silicon have absorption edges inthe tender X-ray regim., enabling resonant tender X-ray scattering experim.nts. While resonant soft X-ray scattering (R-SoXS) hasbeen an invaluable technique for the field utilizing the resonant interaction between soft X-rays with organic m.terials for enhancedscattering contrast (targeting the absorption edges of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen), R-SoXS is lim.ted by the long wavelength ofsoft X-rays and the strong absorption of soft X-rays by organic film..
