Statin use and cognitive function in middle-aged adults with type 1 diabetes

AIm To test associations between statin use and cognitive impairment in adults with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes(T1D).mETHODS In 2010-13, n = 108 middle-aged participants from ongoing observational Pittsburgh Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications Study underwent neurocognitive assessment(mean age and T1 D duration of 49 and 41 years, respectively). All were diagnosed with childhoodonset(i.e., prior to age 18) T1 D between 1950 and 1980 and were seen within one year of diagnosis at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Self-reported statin use(yes/no and if yes, name of statin) was collected biennially from parent study baseline(1986-1988) to time of neurocognitive testing. Logistic regression models tested associations between statin use groups and cognitive impairment(defined as having two or more cognitive test scores 1.5SD or worse than published norms) while linear regression models tested associations between statin use groups and cognitive domain z-scores(domains: Verbal IQ, memory, executive function, psychomotor speed, and visuo-construction). All models controlled for education and age. To address confounding by indication, models were repeated using a propensity score for statin *** Of the 108 participants, 51 reported never using statins. median duration of statin use among the 57 ever users was 6 years. These 57 ever statin users were split to create two groups(≤ or > median years of statin use): 1-6 years(n = 25), and 7-12 years(n = 32). Compared with never users, using statins 1-6 years tripled the odds of cognitive impairment(OR = 3.16; 95%CI: 0.93-10.72; P = 0.06) and using statins 7-12 years almost quintupled the odds of cognitive impairment(OR = 4.84; 95%CI: 1.63-14.44; P = 0.005). Compared with never users, using statins 1-6 or 7-12 years was related to worse performance in the memory domain(β =-0.52; P = 0.003, and-0.39; P = 0.014, respectively). Real-time temperature prediction of electric machines using machine learning with physically informed features

Accurate estimation of the internal temperatures of electric machines is critical to increasing their power density and reliability since key temperatures,such as magnet temperature,are often difficult to *** work presents a new machine learning based modelling approach,incorporating novel physically informed feature engineering,which achieves best-in-class accuracy and reduced training *** different features introduced are proportional to sources of machine losses and require no prior knowledge of the machine,hence the models are completely data *** using a standard experimental dataset shows that modelling errors can be reduced by up to 82.5%,resulting in the lowest mean squared error recorded in the literature of 2.40 K^(2).Additionally,models can be trained with less training data and have lower sensitivity to data ***-ically,it was possible to train a loss enhanced multilayer perceptron model to a mean squared errormodel with just 60 h to the same *** inference time of the model can be 1–2 orders of magnitude faster than competing models and requires no time to optimise hyperparameters,compared to weeks or months for other state-of-the-art prediction *** results are highly important for enabling low-cost real-time temperature monitoring of electric machines to improve operational efficiency,safety,reliability,and power density.

The microstructures of 316L stainless steel created by rapid solidification are investigated by comparing the similar microstructures of individual hatches of directed energy deposition additive manufacturing(DED-Am)and those of single,laser surface-melted tracks formed on a solid *** recoil pressure,which is exponentially dependent on the laser beam power density,induces convection of the melt pool,which causes formation of microstructural bands in the as-solidified *** microstructural bands are associated with changes in the chromium concentration and are a significant component of the inhomogeneous microstructure of DED-Am.

Adsorption of methane on biochar for emission reduction in oil and gas fields

To contribute to the reduction of methane emissions,using low-cost biochar as adsorbents for capturing and storing methane in oil and gas fields is *** work presents results of methane adsorption on four biochars made from forestry wastes in comparison with the results of three commercial activated *** the adsorption capacity of the biochars is lower by over 50%than that of the activated carbons,thelow-cost and potential environmental benefits provide the incentive to the ***,it is shown that biochar can store more methane than vessels of compressed gas up to the pressure of 75 bar,suggesting the possibility of avoiding high-pressure gas compression and heavy vessels for cost savings in oil and gas *** thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of the adsorption are studied and implications for the targeted application are discussed.

The FAIR principles of Wilkinson et al.[1]are finding their way from research into application domains,one of which is the precise positioning with global satellite navigation systems(GNSS).Current GNSS users demand that data and services are findable online,accessible via open protocols(by both,machines and humans),interoperable with their legacy systems and reusable in various *** metadata are essential in seamless communication between GNSS data and service providers and their users,and,for decades,geodetic and geospatial standards are efficiently implemented to support ***,GNSS user community is transforming from precise positioning by highly specialised use by geodetic professionals to every-day precise positioning by autonomous vehicles or wellness obsessed ***,rapid technological developments allow alternative ways of offering data and services to their *** transforming circumstances warrant a review whether metadata defined in generic geospatial and geodetic standards in use still support FAIR use of modern GNSS data and services across its novel user *** paper reports the results of current GNSS users'requirements in various application sectors on the way data,metadata and services are *** engaged with GNSS stakeholders to validate our findings and to gain understanding on their perception of the FAIR *** results confirm that offering FAIR GNSS data and services is fundamental,but for a confident use of these,there is a need to review the way metadata are offered to the *** standard compliant GNSS community metadata profile and providing relevant metadata with data on-demand,the approach outlined in this paper,is a way to manage current GNSS users'expectations and the way to improve FAIR GNSS data and service delivery for both humans and the machines.

We evaluate an adaptive optimisation methodology,Bayesian optimisation(BO),for designing a minimum weight explosive reactive armour(ERA)for protection against a surrogate medium calibre kinetic energy(KE)long rod projectile and surrogate shaped charge(SC)*** perform the optimisation using a conventional BO methodology and compare it with a conventional trial-and-error approach from a human expert.A third approach,utilising a novel human-machine teaming framework for BO is also *** for the optimisation is generated using numerical simulations that are demonstrated to provide reasonable qualitative agreement with reference *** human-machine teaming methodology is shown to identify the optimum ERA design in the fewest number of evaluations,outperforming both the stand-alone human and stand-alone BO *** a design space of almost 1800 configurations the human-machine teaming approach identifies the minimum weight ERA design in 10 samples.

Assessing risks from mining-induced ground movements near gas wells
