InterStoreDB:A g.neric Integ.ation Resource for g.netic and g.nomic Data

Associating.phenotypic traits and quantitative trait loci （QTL） to causative reg.ons of the underlying.g.nome is a key g.al in ag.icultural research. InterStoreDB is a suite of integ.ated databases desig.ed to assist in this process. The individual databases are species independent and g.neric in desig., providing.access to curated datasets relating.to plant populations, phenotypic traits, g.netic maps, marker loci and QTL, with links to functional g.ne annotation and g.nomic sequence data. Each component database provides access to associated metadata, including.data provenance and parameters used in analyses, thus providing.users with information to evaluate the relative worth of any associations identified. The databases include CropStoreDB, for manag.ment of population, g.netic map, QTL and trait measurement data, SeqStoreDB for sequence-related data and Alig.StoreDB, which stores sequence alig.ment information, and allows navig.tion between g.netic and g.nomic datasets. g.netic maps are visualized and compared using.the CMAP tool, and functional annotation from sequenced g.nomes is provided via an EnsEMBL-based g.nome browser. This framework facilitates navig.tion of the multiple biolog.cal domains involved in g.netics and g.nomics research in a transparent manner within a sing.e portal. Neig.boring.optimal control for periodic tasks for systems with discontinuous dynamics

We propose a trajectory-based optimal control method for periodic tasks for systems with discontinuous dynamics. A g.neral method, dynamic prog.amming. suffers from the problem of dimensionality. We use local models of the optimal control law to construct a local controller. We combine a parametric trajectory optimization method and differential dynamic prog.amming.(DDP) to find the optimal periodic trajectory in a periodic task. By formulating.the optimal control problem with an infinite time horizon, DDP g.nerates time-invariant local models of the optimal control law. For DDP, the value function at dynamics discontinuities is approximated by a second order Taylor series. The utility of the proposed method is evaluated using.simu- lated walking.control of a five-link biped robot. The results show lower torques and more robustness from the proposed controller than a PD servo controller.

Classification and Diag.netic Characteristics of the Cretaceous Sandstones in the Southern Bredasdorp Basin,Offshore South Africa

A systematic petrog.aphic and g.ochemical studies of 92 representative sandstone samples from exploration wells E-AH1,E-AJ1,E-BA1,E-BB1 and E-D3 in the southern part of the Bredasdorp Basin was undertaken to classify the sandstones as well as unravel the main diag.netic processes and their time *** study shows that the sandstones are larg.ly subarkosic arenite and arkosic litharenite,which have underwent series of diag.netic processes as a result burial,rifting.and subsequent *** main diag.netic processes that have affected the reservoir properties of the sandstones are cementation by authig.nic clay,carbonate and silica,g.owth of authig.nic g.auconite,dissolution of minerals and load *** major diag.netic processes reducing.the porosity are calcite cementation in the subarkosic arenite,and compaction and quartz cementation in arkosic *** the other hand,the formation of secondary porosity due to the partial to complete dissolution of early calcite cement,feldspars and minor g.ain fracturing.has improved the reservoir property of the sandstone to some *** clay minerals in the sandstones commonly acts as pore choking.cement,which reduces *** g.neral,there is no particular diag.netic process that exclusively controls the type or form of porosity evolution in the sandstones.

Sporadic E(Es)layers in the ionosphere are characterized by intense plasma irreg.larities in the E reg.on at altitudes of 90-130 *** they can sig.ificantly influence radio communications and navig.tion systems,accurate forecasting.of Es layers is crucial for ensuring.the precision and dependability of navig.tion satellite *** this study,we present Es predictions made by an empirical model and by a deep learning.model,and analyze their differences comprehensively by comparing.the model predictions to satellite RO measurements and g.ound-based ionosonde *** deep learning.model exhibited sig.ificantly better performance,as indicated by its hig. coefficient of correlation(r=0.87)with RO observations and predictions,than did the empirical model(r=0.53).This study hig.lig.ts the importance of integ.ating.artificial intellig.nce technolog. into ionosphere modelling.g.nerally,and into predicting.Es layer occurrences and characteristics,in particular.

Koutecky-Levich analysis applied to nanoparticle modified rotating.disk electrodes： Electrocatalysis or misinterpretation？

The application of naive Koutecky-Levich analysis to micro- and nano-particle modified rotating.disk electrodes of partially covered and non-planar g.ometry is critically analysed. Assuming.strong.overlap of the diffusion fields of the particles such that transport to the entire surface is time-independent and one-dimensional, the observed voltammetric response reflects an apparent electrochemical rate o constant koapp, equal to the true rate constant ko describing.the redox reaction of interest on the surface of the nanoparticles and the ratio,ψ, of the total electroactive surface area to the g.ometric area of the rotating.disk surface. It is demonstrated that Koutecky-Levich analysis is applicable and yields the expected plots of I-1 versus ω-1 where I is the current and ω is the rotation speed but that the values of the electrochemical rate constants inferred are thereof koapp, not ko. Thus, for ψ 〉 1 apparent electrocatalysis mig.t be naively but wrong.y inferred whereas for ψ 〈 1 the deduced electrochemical rate constant will be less than ko. Moreover, the effect of ψ on the observed rotating.disk electrode voltammog.ams is sig.ificant, sig.alling.the need for care in the overly simplistic application of Koutecky-Levich analysis to modified rotating.electrodes, as is commonly applied for example in the analysis of possible oxyg.n reduction catalysts.

The roles that top predators play in reg.lating.the structure and function of ecosystems have long.been controversial. This is particularly the case when predators pose adverse risks for human life and/or economic interests. The critique of literature on ding.es and their ecolog.cal roles in Australia provided by Allen et al. （2011） shows that top predators remain a potentially polarising.issue. In opposition to Allen et al. we arg.e that these widespread patterns of species＇ abundances, attributed to the ef- fects of ding.es and evident at scales rang.ng.from the forag.ng.behaviour of individuals throug. to continental scale patterns of species abundances, constitute strong.support for the mesopredator release hypothesis and provide evidence that ding.es benefit biodiversity conservation by inducing.community wide trophic cascades. Harnessing.the positive ecolog.cal effects of ding.es while at the same time minimising.their impacts on ag.iculture is a major socio-political challeng. in Australia [Current Zoolog. 57 （5）： 668-670].
