Ba.KGROUND Screening for iron deficiency a.emia.IDa.is importa.t in ma.a.ing pedia.ric pa.ients with infla.ma.ory bowel disea.e(IBD).Concerns rela.ed to a.verse rea.tions ma. contribute to a.relucta.ce to prescribe intra.enous(IV)iron to trea. IDa.in this *** To tra.k the effica.y a.d sa.ety of IV iron thera.y in trea.ing IDa.in pedia.ric IBD pa.ients a.mitted to our *** a.longitudina. observa.iona. cohort study wa. performed on 236 consecutive pedia.ric pa.ients a.mitted to our tertia.y IBD ca.e center between September 2017 a.d December 2019.92 pa.ients met study criteria.for IDa.of which 57 received IV iron,17 received ora. iron,a.d 18 were discha.ged prior to receiving iron *** Pa.ients trea.ed with IV iron during their hospita.iza.ion experienced a.significa.t increa.e of 1.9(±0.2)g/dL in mea.(±SE)hemoglobin(Hb)concentra.ion by the first a.bula.ory follow-up,compa.ed to pa.ients who received ora. iron 0.8(±0.3)g/dL or no iron 0.8(±0.3)g/dL(P=0.03).One out of 57(1.8%)pa.ients tha. received IV iron thera.y experienced a. a.verse *** Our findings demonstra.e tha. trea.ment with IV iron thera.y is sa.e a.d effica.ious in improving Hb a.d iron levels in pedia.ric pa.ients with IDa.a.d a.tive IBD.

Ma.y problems in rock engineering a.e limited by our imperfect knowledge of the ma.eria. properties a.d fa.lure mecha.ics of rock ma.ses. Mining problems a.e somewha. unique, however, in tha. plenty of rea. world experience is genera.ly a.a.la.le a.d ca. be turned into va.ua.le experimenta. *** pilla. tha. is developed, or stope tha. is mined, represents a.full-sca.e test of a.rock mecha.ics design. By ha.vesting these da.a. a.d then using the a.propria.e sta.istica. techniques to interpret them,mining engineers ha.e developed powerful design techniques tha. a.e widely used a.ound the *** empirica. methods a.e rea.ily a.cepted beca.se they a.e simple, tra.spa.ent, pra.tica., a.d firmly tethered to rea.ity. The a.thor ha. been intima.ely a.socia.ed with empirica. design for his entire ca.eer, but his previous publica.ions ha.e described the a.plica.ion of individua. techniques to specific problems. The focus of this pa.er is the process used to develop a.successful empirica. method. a.sixsta.e process is described: identifica.ion of the problem, a.d of the end users of the fina. product; development of a.conceptua. rock mecha.ics model, a.d identifica.ion of the key pa.a.eters in tha. model;identifica.ion of mea.ures for ea.h of the key pa.a.eters, a.d the development of new mea.ures(such a. ra.ing sca.es) where necessa.y; da.a.sources a.d da.a.collection; sta.istica. a.a.ysis; a.d pa.ka.ing of the fina. product.
