Hepatic encephalopathy,defined as neuropsychiatric dysfunction secondary to liver disease,is a frequent decompensating event in *** clinical impact is highlighted by a notable increase in patient mortality rates and a concomitant reduction in overall quality of ***,liver disease,liver function failure,portosystemic shunting,and associated multi-organ dysfunction result in the increase of disease-causing neurotoxins in the circulation,which impairs cerebral *** circulating neurotoxins are ammonia and inflammatory *** the brain,pathophysiology is less well understood,but is thought to be driven by glial cell *** are the only brain resident cells that have ammonia-metabolizing machinery and are therefore putatively most susceptible to ammonia *** on a large body of mostly in vitro evidence,ammonia-induced cellular and molecular disturbances include astrocyte swelling and oxidative ***,the brain resident macrophages,have been linked to the translation of systemic inflammation to the brain *** evidence from animal studies has provided novel insights into old and new downstream effects of astrocyte and microglial dysfunction such as toxin clearance disruption and myeloid cell attraction to the central nervous system ***,state of the art research increasingly implicates neuronal dysfunction and possibly even irreversible neuronal cell ***-type specific investigation in animal models highlights the need for critical revision of the contribution of astrocytes and microglia to well-established and novel cellular and molecular alterations in hepatic *** this review,we therefore give a current and comprehensive overview of causes,features,and consequences of astrocyte and microglial dysfunction in hepatic encephalopathy,including areas of interest for future investigation.

Thermo-Mechanical Calculation of Printed Circuit Heat exchanger Using Homogenization

The Finite-element Method(FeM) is mainly used to design Compact Heat exchanger structures. However, the narrow channel structures require fine mesh to accurately compute stress and strain. Combined with the dimensions of the overall component, this leads to an excessively large numerical model and therefore long computing time. This is especially true for transient thermal analyses, which require taking into account the full geometry. It is therefore interesting to reduce the size of the mesh. Periodic homogenization is an efficient method for achieving this goal. It can be applied to the core of the structure when periodic patterns(identified on basis of the arrangement of the channels) exist. A method based on this technique, with some improvements, is proposed in this paper for thermal loading without internal pressure. In addition to the equivalent Homogenous Medium(eHM) replacing the periodic patterns, some explicit channels are interposed between the eHM and the cover plates. This has two advantages. The first is to smooth the transition of stiffness between the cover plates and the homogenized medium. The second one is to be able to directly compute stress and strain on the most critical channels located in this area. This paper assesses the method’s effectiveness for thermal loadings in order to conduct thermal stress analyses. First, the equivalent elastic constants of the eHM are obtained with a numerical Finite elements Method. Then, two 2D cases using eHM are compared against a 2D explicit model(i.e. explicit geometry for the core channels). These cases are chosen to validate the eHM itself and its effectiveness for a real section of the heat exchanger. Results show very good agreement with a relative difference lower than 1%. In addition, the sensitivity to the number of layers added between the eHM and the cover plates is analysed. It is recommended interposing at least two layers of patterns to obtain converged results for the considered configuration

Ultrafiltration for environmental safety in shellfish production: A case of bloom emergence

The process of ultrafiltration(UF)of natural seawater often encounters the problems of variation in water quality and coastal *** validate the feasibility of UF in shellfish farms,this study compared the hydraulic performance and pollutant removal efficiency of the UF process with those of the commonly used treatments that combine several filtration steps with ultraviolet(UV)*** comparison was conducted in the cases of natural seawater and a coastal *** that the UF process encountered the specific type of pollution,this study evaluated the filtration performance of the UF process and the retention of total suspended solids(Tss),bacteria,phytoplankton,and zooplankton.A real coastal bloom was considered in the case study of an experimental shellfish hatchery/nursery in *** results show that both treatments were able to eliminate approximately 50%of ***,in contrast with UV treatment combined with filtration,the UF process retained total amounts of phytoplankton,zooplankton,and bacteria in the *** the hydraulic performance of the UF process was impacted by the coastal bloom,the fouling was eliminated through chemical cleaning conducted at a frequency less than once per 12 *** the severe pollution,this study confirmed the pollution resistance and treatment performance of the UF process,indicating that UF has the potential to enhance the biosecurity level.

This study aims to investigate the ability of an imidazolium biobased Zwitterionic Ionic Liquids(ZILs)in enhancing the phytoavailability of copper from garden(G)and vineyard(V)soils using the model plant *** and artificially contaminated CusO_(4) soils,unamended and ZIL-amended soil modalities were *** copper/ZIL molar ratio(1/4)introduced was rationally established based on molecular modeling and on the maximal copper concentration in artificially contaminated *** accumulation of copper in the shoots was detected for the uncontaminated and copper contaminated ZIL amended V soils(18.9 and 23.3 mg/kg,respectively)contrary to G soils together with a ZIL concentration of around 3%(W/W)detected by LC-Ms *** data evidenced a Cu-accumulation improvement of 38%and 66%compared to non-amended V soils(13.6 and 13.9 mg/kg respectively).ZIL would be mainly present under Cu(II)-ZIL_(4) complexes in the *** impact on the chemical composition of shoot was also *** results show that depending on the soils modalitity,the presence of free copper and/or ZIL led to different chemical compositions in lignin and monomeric sugar *** the biorefinery context,performances of enzymatic hydrolysis of shoots were also related to the presence of both ZIL and copper under free or complex *** assessment of the vineyard soil samples indicated that the quantity of copper and ZIL remaining in the soils had no significant *** amendment in a copper-contaminated soil was demonstrated as being a promising way to promote the valorization of phytoremediation plants.

sandstone type deposits are the most common type of uranium deposits in the world.A large variety of sub-types have been defined,based either on the morphology of the deposits(e.g.,tabular,roll front,etc),or on the sedimentological setting(e.g.,paleovalley,paleochannel,unconformity),or on tectonic or lithologic controls(e.g.,tectonolithologic,mafic dykes/sills),or still on a variety of others characteristics(phreatic oxidation type,interlayer permeable type,multi-element stratabound infiltrational,solution front limb deposit,humate type,etc.),reflecting the diversity of the characteristics of these deposits,but making it difficult to have a clear overview of these ***,uranium deposits occurring in the same sedimentological setting(e.g.,paleochannel),presenting similar morphologies(e.g.,tabular),may result from different genetic mechanisms and thus can be misleading for exploration *** aim of the present paper is to propose a new view on sandstone-related uranium deposits combining both genetic and descriptive *** dual view is indeed of primordial importance because all the critical characteristics of each deposit type,not limited to the morphology/geometry of the ore bodies and their relationships with depositional environments of the sandstone,have to be taken into account to propose a comprehensive classification of uranium *** this respect,several key ore-forming processes,like the physical-chemical characteristics of the mineralizing fluid,have to be used to integrate genetic aspects in the *** a succession of concentration steps,potentially temporally-disconnected,are involved in the genesis of some uranium mineralization,the classification here proposed will focus on the main mechanisms responsible for the formation and/or the location of ore *** objective of this paper is also to propose a robust and widely usable terminology to define and categorize sandstone uranium deposits,considering

The molecular engineering of fluorescent organic/polymeric materials,specifically those emitting in the deep red to near-infrared spectrum,is vital for advancements in optoelectronics and *** diimide(PDI),a well-known fluorescent scaffold,offers high thermal and photophysical stability but suffers from fluorescence quenching in solid or aggregate states due to intenseπ-π*** mitigate this,simple and versatile methods for strong PDI aggregate emission without extensive synthetic demands are highly desirable but still ***,we report a straightforward strategy to enhance the solid-state emission of PDI by introducing certain degree of through-space charge transfer(TsCT)via controlled radical polymerization,which can efficiently distort the typical face-to-face PDI stacking,enabling greatly enhanced deep red *** is achieved by growing electron-donating star-shape styrenic(co)polymers from a multidirectional electron-accepting PDI *** incorporation of polycyclic aromatic monomers further shifted the emission into the near-infrared region,albeit with a reduced ***,the emission of the PDI-based TsCT polymers can be systematically manipulated by leveraging the balance between PDI stacking and the TsCT degree,as confirmed by both experimental study and theoretical *** approach circumvents complex synthetic procedures,offering highly emissive materials with large stokes shifts and showing broad potential for optoelectronic technology.

A quantum cascade laser infrared spectrometer for CO_2 stable isotope analysis：Field implementation at a hydrocarbon contaminated site under bio-remediation

Real-time methods to monitor stable isotope ratios of CO_2 are needed to identify biogeochemical origins of CO_2 emissions from the soil–air interface. An isotope ratio infra-red spectrometer（IRIs） has been developed to measure CO_2 mixing ratio with δ~13C isotopic signature, in addition to mixing ratios of other greenhouse gases（CH_4, N2_O）. The original aspects of the instrument as well as its precision and accuracy for the determination of the isotopic signature δ~13C of CO_2 are discussed. A first application to biodegradation of hydrocarbons is presented, tested on a hydrocarbon contaminated site under aerobic bio-treatment. CO_2 flux measurements using closed chamber method is combined with the determination of the isotopic signature δ~13C of the CO_2 emission to propose a non-intrusive method to monitor in situ biodegradation of hydrocarbons. In the contaminated area, high CO_2 emissions have been measured with an isotopic signature δ~13C suggesting that CO_2 comes from petroleum hydrocarbon *** first field implementation shows that rapid and accurate measurement of isotopic signature of CO_2 emissions is particularly useful in assessing the contribution of contaminant degradation to the measured CO_2 efflux and is promising as a monitoring tool for aerobic bio-treatment.

Repositories for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste rely on multi-barrier systems to isolate waste from the biosphere.A multi-barrier system typically comprises the natural geological barrier provided by the repository host rock e in our case the Opalinus Clay e and an engineered barrier system(eBs).The swiss repository concept for spent fuel and vitrified high-level waste(HLW)consists of waste canisters,which are emplaced horizontally in the middle of an emplacement gallery and are separated from the gallery wall by granular backfill material(GBM).We describe here a selection of five in-situ experiments where characteristic hydro-mechanical(HM)and thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)processes have been *** first example is a coupled HM and mine-by test where the evolution of the excavation damaged zone(eDZ)was monitored around a gallery in the Opalinus Clay(eD-B experiment).Measurements of pore-water pressures and convergences due to stress redistribution during excavation highlighted the HM *** same measurements were subsequently carried out in a heater test(He-D)where we were able to characterise the Opalinus Clay in terms of its THM *** yielded detailed data to better understand the THM behaviours of the granular backfill and the natural host *** a presentation of the swiss concept for HLW storage,we designed three demonstration experiments that were subsequently implemented in the Mont Terri rock laboratory:(1)the engineered barrier(eB)experiment,(2)the in-situ heater test on key-THM processes and parameters(He-e)experiment,and(3)the full-scale emplacement(Fe)*** first demonstration experiment has been dismantled,but the last two ones are on-going.

Numerical investigation of electric field distortion induced by internal defects in composite insulators

This paper presents an exhaustive study of numerical investigations based on three-dimensional finite-element method modelling of several non-ceramic insulators of 69,110 and 230 kV having different internal semi-conductive defects in terms of size and *** internal defects were positioned close to the high-voltage electrode,the ground electrode and at floating *** simulations effected on the distortion of the axial and radial e-field components close to the insulator shank between *** results obtained showed that the radial e-field component is more sensitive to the presence of an internal defect as it shows a greater distortion in presence of the *** was also observed that the e-field component distortion increases with longer internal defect and that this increase is particularly important for a defect at floating ***,it was demonstrated that the length of the insulator,for a defect of constant length,has no significant influence on the e-field component ***,the results demonstrated that the presence of a grading ring,as used on the 230 kV insulator,does not have any influence on the e-field component distortion,independently of the defect position.
