How can Practitioners Support citizen Volunteers in disaster Risk Reduction? Insight from “Good and Ready” in Aotearoa New Zealand

Global and national policy frameworks emphasize the importance of people's participation and volunteers' role in disaster risk reduction. While research has extensively focused on volunteers in disaster response and recovery, less attention has been paid on how organizations involved in disaster risk management can support volunteers in leading and coordinating communitybased disaster risk reduction. In 2019, the New Zealand Red cross piloted the Good and Ready initiative in Auckland,Aotearoa New Zealand, with the objective to empower local people in resilience building with a focus on volunteers and community participation. This research examined the positive and negative outcomes of Good and Ready and investigated volunteers' experiences in the disaster resilience initiative. It involved the codesign of a questionnaire-based survey using participatory methods with Good and Ready volunteers, the dissemination of the survey to gather volunteers' viewpoints, and a focus group discussion with participatory activities with Red cross volunteers. The findings highlight that a key challenge lies in finding a balance between a program that provides flexibility to address contextual issues and fosters communities' ownership, versus a prescriptive and standardized approach that leaves little room for creativity and self-initiative. It pinpoints that supporting volunteers with technical training is critical but that soft skills training such as coordinating, communicating,or facilitating activities at the local level are needed. It concludes that the sustainability of Good and Ready requires understanding and meeting volunteers' motivations and expectations and that enhancing partnerships with local emergency management agencies would strengthen the program.

The precise movement speed regulation is a key factor to improve the control effect and efficiency of the cyborg ***,the current stimulation techniques cannot realize the graded control of the *** this study,we achieved the multi-level speed regulation of cyborg rats in the large open field and treadmill by specifically targeting the cuneiform Nucleus(cnF)of the Mesencephalic Locomotor Region(MLR).detailed,we measured the influence of each stimulation parameter on the speed control process which included the real-time speed,accelerated speed,response time,and acceleration *** concluded that the pulse period and the pulse width were the main determinants influencing the accelerated speed of cyborg *** the amplitude of stimulation was found to affect the response time exhibited by the cyborg *** study provides valuable insights into the regulation of rat locomotion speed and highlights the potential for utilizing this approach in various experimental settings.

Angiosperms represent most plants that humans cultivate,grow,and ***,angiosperms are only one of five major land plant *** a whole lineage,plants also include algal *** these clades represent a tremendous genetic diversity that can be investigated to reveal the evolutionary history of any given *** this review,we describe the current model of the plant immune system,discuss its evolution based on the recent literature,and propose future directions for the *** angiosperms,plant–microbe interactions have been intensively studied,revealing essential cell surface and intracellular immune receptors,as well as metabolic and hormonal defense *** diversity at the genomic and functional levels demonstrates the conservation of these pathways across land plants,some of which are beyond *** basis of the conserved mechanisms,lineage-specific variations have occurred,leading to diversified reservoirs of immune *** rare cases,this diversity has been harnessed and successfully transferred to other species by integration of wild immune receptors or engineering of novel forms of receptors for improved resistance to *** propose that exploring further the diversity of immune mechanisms in the whole plant lineage will reveal completely novel sources of resistance to be deployed in crops.

The levered-dual response(ledAR)coulomb-damped system attains near resonant vibration isolation by differential preloads/offsets in linear *** takes the advantages of both the preloads/offsets in linear springs and the guiderail friction for realizing different levels of vibration *** isolation capacities are investigated on the strategies with both the horizontal and vertical guiderails,with the horizontal rail only,and without *** compressive preloads generally result in the consumption of most of the initial excitation energy so as to overcome the potential *** isolation onsets at the frequency ratio of 1∓0.095 on the left-hand side(LHS)and the right-hand side(RHS)of the lever are relative to the load plate *** observed near resonant isolation thus makes the ledAR system a candidate for the isolation of the mechanical systems about resonance while opening a path for simultaneous harvesterisolation functions and passive functions at extreme frequencies.

Understanding the Activity Performance of comets 38P/Stephan-Oterma,64P/Swift-Gehrels and c/2017 M4(ATLAS)through Broadband Photometric Observations

In this work,we report observations of three comets:38P/Stephan-Oterma,64P/Swift-Gehrels,and c/2017 M4(ATLAS),conducted with the Nanshan one-meter wide-field telescope in 2018 August and November,and *** extracted morphological features through image enhancement techniques and calculated the dust activity parameter,Afρ,along with dust mass loss rates and coma color indices using broadband photometric *** morphological analysis uncovered a spectrum of dust characteristics among the observed comets,ranging from a significant twisted structure in comet 38P/Stephan-Oterma’s coma to the regular coma envelope surrounding comet 64P/*** Afρvalues varied between 148.8±0.3 cm for 64P/Swift-Gehrels and1118.5±6.2 cm for c/2017 M4(ATLAS)(measured within a reference aperture radius ofρ=6″),indicating a range from moderate to high activity *** mass loss rates were estimated from 328.1 kg s^(-1)for comet 64P/Swift-Gehrels to 1395.5 kg s^(-1)for comet c/2017 M4(ATLAS).The color indices of comets 38P/Stephan-Oterma and c/2017 M4(ATLAS)closely resemble the average colors of active short-period comets and active longperiod comets,*** contrast,64P/Swift-Gehrels exhibits a significantly bluer hue than typical Jupiter family comets.

BAcKGROUNd Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLd),characterised by hepatic lipid accumulation,causes inflammation and oxidative stress accompanied by cell damage and *** injury(LI)is also frequently reported in patients hospitalised with coronavirus disease 2019(cOVId-19),while preexisting MASLd increases the risk of LI and the development of cOVId-19-associated *** of injury at the cellular level remain unclear,but it may be significant that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-coV-2)which causes cOVId-19,uses angiotensin-converting expression enzyme 2(AcE2),a key regulator of the‘anti-inflammatory’arm of the renin-angiotensin system,for viral attachment and host cell *** To determine if hepatic AcE2 levels are altered during progression of MASLd and in patients who died with severe *** AcE2 protein levels and localisation,and histological fibrosis and lipid droplet accumulation as markers of MASLd were determined in formalin-fixed liver tissue sections across the MASLd pathological spectrum(isolated hepatocellular steatosis,metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis(MASH)+/-fibrosis,end-stage cirrhosis)and in post-mortem tissues from patients who had died with severe cOVId-19,using AcE2 immunohistochemistry and haematoxylin and eosin and picrosirius red staining of total collagen and lipid droplet areas,followed by quantification using machine learning-based image pixel *** AcE2 staining is primarily intracellular and concentrated in the cytoplasm of centrilobular hepatocytes and apical membranes of bile duct ***,AcE2 protein levels are elevated in non-fibrotic MASH compared to healthy controls but not in the progression to MASH with fibrosis and in ***2 protein levels and histological fibrosis are not associated,but AcE2 and liver lipid droplet content are significantly correlated across the MASLd *** A
