Soil properties and habitats determine the response of bacterial communities to agricultural wastewater irrigation

Increasing temperatures and variability of precipitation events due to climate change will lead in the future to higher irrigation demands in ***,the use of secondary treated wasterwater(TWW)could have consequences for the receiving soil environment and its resident microbial *** objective of this study was to characterize the importance of soil properties and habitats to the response of soil bacteria and archaea to irrigation with *** agricultural soils with contrasting textures(loamy sand or silt loam)and,for each,three variants differing in soil organic carbon and nitrogen,as generated by long-term fertilization,were *** each of these six soils,prokaryotic communities from two habitats,i.e.,root-free bulk soil and the rhizosphere of developing cucumber plants in the greenhouse,were *** were analyzed by the quantity and diversity of their polymerase chain reaction(PcR)-amplified 16S rRNA *** account for TWW-associated nutrient effects,potable water(PW)served as a *** sequence analysis showed that prokaryotic communities mainly consisted of bacteria(99.8%).Upon irrigation,regardless of the water quality,prokaryotic diversity declined,p H increased,and no bacterial growth was detected in bulk *** contrast,the growth of cucumbers was stimulated by TWW,indicating that plants were the main ***,strong responses were seen in the rhizosphere,suggesting an indirect effect of TWW by altered *** main bacterial responders to TWW were Proteobacteria,Bacteroidetes,Actinobacteria,and *** in bacterial communities due to TWW were less pronounced in all variants of the silt loam,indicating the importance of clay and soil organic carbon for buffering effects of TWW on soil bacterial ***,soil organic carbon and soil texture are important parameters that need to be considered when applying TWW in agriculture.

cO_(2)Plume Geothermal(cPG)Systems for combined Heat and Power Production:an Evaluation of Various Plant configurations

cO_(2) Plume Geothermal(cPG)systems are a promising concept for utilising petrothermal resources in the context of a future carbon capture utilisation and sequestration *** geothermal energy has a tremendous worldwide potential for decarbonising both the power and heating *** paper investigates three potential cPG configurations for combined heating and power generation(cHP).The present work examines scenarios with reservoir depths of 4 km and 5 km,as well as required district heating system(DHS)supply temperatures of 70℃ and 90℃.The results reveal that a two-staged serial cHP concept eventuates in the highest achievable net power *** a thermosiphon system,the relative net power reduction by the cHP option compared with a sole power generation system is significantly lower than for a pumped *** net power reduction for pumped systems lies between 62.6%and 22.9%.For a thermosiphon system with a depth of 5 km and a required DHS supply temperature of 70℃,the achievable net power by the most beneficial cHP option is even 9.2%higher than for sole power generation *** second law efficiency for the sole power generation concepts are in a range between 33.0%and 43.0%.The second law efficiency can increase up to 63.0%in the case of a cHP ***,the combined heat and power generation can significantly increase the overall second law efficiency of a cPG *** evaluation of the achievable revenues demonstrates that a cHP application might improve the economic performance of both thermosiphon and pumped cPG ***,the minimum heat revenue required for compensating the power reduction increases with higher electricity *** summary,the results of this work provide valuable insights for the potential development of cPG systems for cHP applications and their economic feasibility.

In this paper we study the effect of rolling friction on the dynamics in a single spout fluidized bed using Discrete Element Method （DEM） coupled to computational Fluid Dynamics （cFD）. In a first step we neglect rolling friction and show that the results delivered by the open source cFD-DEM framework applied in this study agree with previous simulations documented in literature. In a second step we include a rolling friction sub-model in order to investigate the effect of particle non-sphericity. The influence of particle-particle as well as particle-wall rolling friction on the flow in single spout fluidized bed is studied separately. Adequate rolling friction model parameters are obtained using first principle DEM simulations and data from literature. Finally, we demonstrate the importance of correct modelling of rolling friction for coupled cFD-DEM simulations of spout fluidized beds. We show that simulation results can be improved significantly when applying a rolling friction model, and that experimental data from literature obtained with Positron Emission Particle Trackin~ fPEPT） technique can be satisfactorily reoroduced.

Electron–plasmon and electron–magnon scattering in ferromagnets from first principles by combining GW and GT self-energies

This work combines two powerful self-energy techniques:the well-known GW method and a self-energy recently developed by us that describes renormalization effects caused by the scattering of electrons with magnons and Stoner *** GT selfenergy,which is fully k-dependent and contains infinitely many spin-flip ladder diagrams,was shown to have a profound impact on the electronic band structure of Fe,co,and *** the present work,we refine the method by combining GT with the GW *** resulting GWT spectral functions exhibit strong lifetime effects and emergent dispersion *** are in an overall better agreement with experimental spectra than those obtained with GW or GT alone,even showing partial improvements over local-spin-density approximation dynamical mean-field *** performed analysis provides a basis for applying the GWT technique to a wider class of magnetic materials.

E-selectin ligand complexes adopt an extended high-affinity conformation

E-selectin is a cell-adhesion molecule of the vascular endothelium that promotes essential leukocyte rolling in the early inflammatory response by binding to glycoproteins containing the tetrasaccharide sialyl Lewisx(sLex).Efficient leukocyte recruitment under vascular flow conditions depends on an increased lifetime of E-selectin/ligand complexes under tensile force in a so-called catch-bond binding ***-crystal structures of a representative fragment of the extracellular E-selectin region with sLex and a glycomimetic antagonist thereof reveal an extended E-selectin conformation,which is identified as a high-affinity binding state of E-selectin by molecular dynamics ***-angle X-ray scattering experiments demonstrate a direct link between ligand binding and E-selectin conformational transition under static conditions in *** permits tracing a series of concerted structural changes connecting ligand binding to conformational stretching as the structural basis of E-selectin catch-bond-mediated leukocyte *** detailed molecular view of the binding site paves the way for the design of a new generation of selectin *** is of special interest,since their therapeutic potentialwas recently demonstrated with the pan-selectin antagonists GMI-1070(Rivipansel).

As one of the most important groups in micropaleontology, Foraminifera is traditionally described to have a membranous, agglutinated or carbonate shell according to its morphology, which resembles the marine granuloreticuloseans. However, recent molecular analyses on its ribosomal RNA gene have disclosed the existence of the naked, and also freshwater and terrestrial species. Foraminiferal SSU rDNA sequence suggests that this group is positioned at the base of the Eukaryotes phylogenetic trees, between Euglenoida and Diplomonadida. Existence of a large amount of genetic types in planktonic foraminifera suggests an underestimation of the biodiversity for the nearly 50 species in world oceans and their close relationship with the ocean environment, such as bio-geographic distribution and water currents. This provides a more reliable proxy for future paleoenvironmental study.

Improved guided bone regeneration by combined application of unmodified, fresh autologous adipose derived regenerative cells and plasma rich in growth factors:A first-in-human case report and literature review

BAcKGROUND Novel strategies are needed for improving guided bone regeneration(GBR) in oral surgery prior to implant placement, particularly in maxillary sinus augmentation(GBR-MSA) and in lateral alveolar ridge augmentation(LRA). This study tested the hypothesis that the combination of freshly isolated, unmodified autologous adipose-derived regenerative cells(UA-ADRcs), fraction 2 of plasma rich in growth factors(PRGF-2) and an osteoinductive scaffold(OIS)(UAADRc/PRGF-2/OIS) is superior to the combination of PRGF-2 and the same OIS alone(PRGF-2/OIS) in GBR-MSA/*** SUMMARY A 79-year-old patient was treated with a bilateral external sinus lift procedure as well as a bilateral lateral alveolar ridge augmentation. GBR-MSA/LRA was performed with UA-ADRc/PRGF-2/OIS on the right side, and with PRGF-2/OIS on the left side. Biopsies were collected at 6 wk and 34 wk after GBRMSA/LRA. At the latter time point implants were placed. Radiographs(32 mo follow-up time) demonstrated excellent bone healing. No radiological or histological signs of inflammation were observed. Detailed histologic,histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical analysis of the biopsies evidenced that UA-ADRc/PRGF-2/OIS resulted in better and faster bone regeneration than PRGF-2/*** GBR-MSA with UA-ADRcs, PRGF-2, and an OIS shows effectiveness without adverse effects.

Biochemical methane potential of three-phase olive mill solid waste:Influence of temperature and supplemental enzymes

Methane potential of three-phase olive mill solid waste(3POMSW)was evaluated by biochemical methane potential(BMP)tests at temperatures of 37.5◦c and 55◦*** results have shown,that thermophilic processing has a higher methane and biogas yield by 10%and 17.2%,respectively,compared to mesophilic *** thermophilic conditions of 3POMSW results in higher conversion of the feedstock into *** result of addition of enzymes(MethaPlus,Hemicellulase,PectinaseL,Amylase S and Lipase)and their mixtures to 3POMSW at 55◦c has shown that the optimum mixture of enzymes was Metha Plus and Hemicellulase,which resulted in an increase of methane yield by 1.3%compared to the base case without addition of *** model equations were developed based on first-order kinetic in order to calculate the biogas yield versus the time as a function of reaction rate constant(k)and the maximum biogas yield(ymax).In this study,results have shown two different reaction rates obtained for the mixtures of enzymes with 3POMSW of 0.130 d^(-1) from t=0…14 days and 0.034 d^(-1) from t=28…63 *** developed simple model equations can be applied for calculating the biogas yield at the time and by optimizing the process improving biological nutrient removal.

The cholera epidemic of 2004 in Douala, cameroon: A lesson learned

Objective: To describe the outbreak of 2004 with a view of retrospectively identifying factors that might explain the low case fatality rate. Methods: Outbreak data from 4 915 cholera patients from registers of the Regional Health Delegation in Douala were analyzed using SPSS. chi-square test, univariate and multivariate analysis were applied. Results: The outbreak started January 2004, peaking at 187 cases per week in February. After a decrease in April, case numbers rose to 688 cases per week in June. The outbreak was over in September 2004( cases per week). The case fatality rate was higher in treatment centers with fewer than one nurse per two patients, than in those with more nursing staff. A temporary staff reduction after the first wave of the epidemic was associated with the increase of the case fatality rate during the second wave. This increase was reversed after re-instating full staff ***: Providing sufficient nursing staff helps to lower the case fatality rate of cholera. Besides a lack of staff, age above 40 years is a risk factor for death in this disease.

Soil carbon and nutrient stocks under Scots pine plantations in comparison to European beech forests: a paired-plot study across forests with different management history and precipitation regimes

Background:Organic carbon stored in forest soils(SOc)represents an important element of the global c *** is thought that the c storage capacity of the stable pool can be enhanced by increasing forest productivity,but empirical evidence in support of this assumption from forests differing in tree species and productivity,while stocking on similar substrate,is ***:We determined the stocks of SOc and macro-nutrients(nitrogen,phosphorus,calcium,potassium and magnesium)in nine paired European beech/Scots pine stands on similar Pleistocene sandy substrates across a precipitation gradient(560–820mm∙yr−1)in northern Germany and explored the influence of tree species,forest history,climate,and soil pH on SOc and nutrient ***:While the organic layer stored on average about 80%more c under pine than beech,the pools of SOc and total N in the total profile(organic layer plus mineral soil measured to 60 cm and extrapolated to 100 cm)were greater under pine by about 40%and 20%,*** contrasts with a higher annual production of foliar litter and a much higher fine root biomass in beech stands,indicating that soil c sequestration is unrelated to the production of leaf litter and fine roots in these stands on Pleistocene sandy *** pools of available P and basic cations tended to be higher under *** precipitation nor temperature influenced the SOc pool,whereas tree species was a key *** extended data set(which included additional pine stands established more recently on former agricultural soil)revealed that,besides tree species identity,forest continuity is an important factor determining the SOc and nutrient pools of these ***:We conclude that tree species identity can exert a considerable influence on the stocks of SOc and macronutrients,which may be unrelated to productivity but closely linked to species-specific forest management histories,thus masking weaker climate and soil chemistry effects on pool sizes
