Plants evolved their own strategy to form the essential link between the endoplasmic reticulum(ER) and the plasma membrane(PM) through a complex including NET3 C and VAP27(Wang et al 2014,Curr Biol).However,the function of plant ER-PM contact sites has not been fully *** this study,we have identified a function for ER-PM contact sites(EPCS) in plants and that is in the autophagosome biogenesis pathway,in concert with actin cytoskeleton and the Arabidopsis EH ***1 and AtEH2 are components of the endocytic TPLATE complex which is known to be essential for endocytosis in plants(Gadeyne et al.,2014,Cell).Both proteins(from now on termed AtEH/Pan1) share high sequence similarity with the yeast ARP2/3 complex activator,Pan1 *** AtEH/Panl proteins localise to the plasma membrane and autophagosomes,and their autophagosome membrane recruitment requires its N-terminal EH domains which interact with *** induction of autophagy,AtEH/Pan1 proteins recruit TPC and AP-2 subunitsand ARP2/3 proteins onto the autophagosome *** expression of AtEH1/Pan1 boosts autophagosome formation and suggest independent and redundant pathways for actin mediated autophagy in ***,AtEH/Pan1 regulated autophagosomes are found associated with EPCS where AtEH/Panl interacts with *** knock-down expression of either AtEH/Pan1 or VAP27-1 are more susceptible to nutrient depleted conditions,indicating defective *** conclusion,our results suggest that AtEH/Pan1 proteins regulate an autophagosome-dependent degradation pathway which starts at the EPCS through its interaction with VAP27-1 and merges with endocytic pathways.

Solar Activity, Solar Wind and Geomagnetic Signatures

The present study investigates solar events through geomagnetic activity and physical processes on the Sun: 1) Quiet activity (QA) related to the slow solar wind, 2) Recurrent activity (RA) related to high and moderate speed solar wind streams from coronal holes, 3) Shock activity (SA) identified by observations of SSCs and 4) Unclear activity (UA) which contains all activity not covered by the first three cases. For recent cycles, we analyze and emphasize some important results: Quiet activity is predominant for cycle 23, comprising 40% of the total activity and over 80% of the activity near solar minimum. Shock and recurrent activity contributions to total geomagnetic activity are largest in cycle 20. The most fluctuating events are observed during cycles 21 and 22. Throughout solar cycle 23, the contribution, from each type of activity, differs from recent solar cycles, with larger percentages of quiet and recurrent activity and less unclear activity. These percentages are similar to those in solar cycles observed in the late 1800s. Since 1963, solar wind data are available. We analyze the distribution of the solar wind velocity for each geomagnetic class of activity and find that: 1) Within each activity type aa does not depend on V, 2) Approximately 80% of the solar wind has V 450 km/s for RA, 3) SA and UA both have 60% of the solar wind V > 450 km/s. We found the following conditions for all four solar cycles: 1) For QA 95% of solar wind speeds are in the range 399 ± 69 km/s, 2) For RA 95% of the solar wind speeds range from 582 ± 110 km/s, 3) For SA 95% of the solar wind velocities are order of 482 ± 101.4 km/s, and 4) For UA 95% of solar wind speeds are 480 ± 85.82 km/s. These results confirm the classification scheme that QA reflects slow wind effects, RA effects high wind stream and UA answers to the fluctuations between high wind stream (~60%) and slow wind (~40%). Genetic down-regulation of gibberellin results in semi-dwarf poplar but few non-target effects on chemical resistance and tolerance to defoliation

Restricted cross-scale habitat selection by American beavers

Animal habitat selection, among other ecological phenomena, is spatially scale dependent. Habitat selection by American beavers (hereafter, beaver) has been studied at singular spatial scales, but to date no research addresses multi-scale selection. Our objectives were to determine if beaver habitat selection was specialized to semiaquatic habitats and if variables explaining habitat selection are consistent between landscape and fine spatial scales. We built maximum entropy (MaxEnt) models to relate landscape-scale presence-only data to landscape variables, and used generalized linear mixed models to evaluate fine spatial scale habitat selection using global positioning system (GPS) relocation data. Explanatory variables between the landscape and fine spatial scale were compared for consistency. Our findings suggested that beaver habitat selection at coarse (study area) and fine (within home range) scales was congruent, and was influenced by increasing amounts of woody wetland edge density and shrub edge density, and decreasing amounts of open water edge density. Habitat suitability at the landscape scale also increased with decreasing amounts of grass frequency. As territorial, central-place foragers, beavers likely trade-off open water edge density (i.e., smaller non-forested wetlands or lodges closer to banks) for defense and shorter distances to forage and obtain construction material. Woody plants along edges and expanses of open water for predator avoidance may limit beaver fitness and subsequently determine beaver habitat selection.
