Push and pull factors driving movement in a social mammal: context dependent behavioral plasticity at the landscape scale

Understanding how key parameters(e.g.,density,range-size,and configuration)can affect animal movement remains a major goal of population *** is particularly important for wildlife disease hosts,such as the European badger Meles meles,a reservoir of Mycobacterium *** we show how movements of 463 individuals among 223 inferred group territories across 755 km2 in Ireland were affected by sex,age,past-movement history,group composition,and group size index from 2009 to *** exhibited a greater probability of moving into groups with a male-biased composition,but male movements into groups were not associated with group *** badgers were,however,more likely to make visits into territories than *** that had immigrated into a territory previously were more likely to emigrate in the *** exhibiting such"itinerant"movement patterns were more likely to belong to younger age ***-territorial movement propensity was negatively associated with group size,indicating that larger groups were more stable and less attractive(or permeable)to *** the landscape,there was substantial variation in inferred territory-size and movement dynamics,which was related to group *** represents behavioral plasticity previously only reported at the scale of the species’biogeographical *** results highlight how a"one-size-fits-all"explanation of badger movement is likely to fail under varying ecological contexts and scales,with implications for bovine tuberculosis management.

The role that visual discriminative ability plays among giant pandas in social communication and individual discrimination has received less attention than olfactory and auditory ***,we used an eye-tracker technology to investigate pupil fixation patterns for 8 captive male giant pandas Ailuropoda *** paired images(N=26)of conspecifics against:1)sympatric predators(gray wolves and tigers),and non-threatening sympatric species(golden pheasant,golden snub-nosed monkey,takin,and red panda),2)conspecifics with atypical fur colora-tion(albino and brown),and 3)zookeepers/non-zookeepers wearing either work uniform or plain *** each session,we tracked the pan-da's pupil movements and measured pupil first fixation point(FFP),fixation latency,total fixation count(TFC),and duration(TFd)of attention to each ***,pandas exhibited similar attention(FFPs and TFCs)to images of predators and non-threatening sympatric *** of golden pheasant,snub-nosed monkey,and tiger received less attention(TFd)than images of conspecifics,whereas images of takin and red panda received more attention,suggesting a greater alertness to habitat or food competitors than to potential ***'TFCs were greater for images of black-white conspecifics than for albino or brown phenotypes,implying that familiar color elicited more *** reacted differently to images of men versus *** images of women only,pandas gave more attention(TFC)to familiar combinations(uniformed zookeepers and plain-clothed non-zookeepers),consistent with the familiarity *** pandas can use visual perception to discriminate intra-specifically and inter-specifically,including details of human appearance,has applications for panda conservation and captive husbandry.

In a precautionary response to the current coronavirus(COVId-19)pandemic,China’s Ministries permanently banned eating and trading in terrestrial wild(non-livestock)animals on 24 February 2020,and extensively updated the list of Fauna under Special State Protection(LFSSP)in 2020 and 2021,in which pangolins(Manidae spp.)were upgraded to the highest protection *** 509 pangolin prosecution records from China Judgements online prior to these changes(01/01/14–31/12/19),we identified that Guangdong,Guangxi and Yunnan Provinces were hotspots for trade in whole pangolins and their scales.

It is widely believed that various animal species can sense and respond to the geophysical stimuli that precede earthquakes,especially electromagnetic fields,although supporting field evidence is mostly *** we report on the reactions of four female giant pandas under observation over the three days prior to the Lushan(30.1°N,103.0°E)magnitude 7.0 earthquake that occurred in Sichuan province,China,on April 20,*** observed no significant generalized behavioral anomalies indicative of them perceiving an impending *** also observed no startle behaviors in the 5 s prior to tremors commencing,indicating that these pandas either did not detect or did not respond to precursor *** findings suggest that although giant pandas have evolved in,and continue to occupy exclusively,a seismically active range in central China,they do not appear to perceive pre-earthquake geophysical warning signs.

Volatile and C-H-O isotopic compositions of giant Fe-Ti-V oxide deposits in the Panxi region and their implications for the sources of volatiles and the origin of Fe-Ti oxide ores

The Panzhihua,Hongge,and Baima Fe-Ti-V oxide deposits in the Panzhihua-Xichang(Panxi) region are hosted in large layered mafic-ultramafic *** layered intrusions intrude either the Neoproterozoic dengying Formation,composed mainly of limestone,or the Paleoproterozoic Hekou Formation,composed of meta-sedimentary-volcanic *** remains unclear if the wall rocks have been involved during the fractionation of magmas and have affected the sequence of crystallization of Fe-Ti *** and their C-H-O isotopic compositions of magnetite,apatite,clinopyroxene,and plagioclase of different types of ores from the three intrusions are analyzed using a technique of stepwise heating mass spectrometer to evaluate the role of wall rocks in the formation of Fe-Ti oxide *** released from magnetite are composed mainly of H 2 O and CO 2,whereas the other minerals are composed mainly of H 2 O,CO 2 and H *** 800-1200°C temperature interval,the average 13 C values of CO 2 of all the minerals from the three intrusions range from 7.7‰ to 13.5‰ and the average 18 O CO 2 values from 19.1‰ to 19.5‰,which are scattered in a mixed field with basalt and the two types of wall rocks as end-members,indicating that CO 2 from the wall rocks may have been involved in the magmas from which the three intrusions *** 400-800 C temperature interval,both 13 C values(13.7‰ to 17.9‰ on the average) and 18 O values(16.2‰ to 19.2‰ on the average) of CO 2 of all the minerals are lower than those for 800-1200 C temperature interval,and much closer to the values of the wall *** H 2 O released at the 400-800 C temperature interval has relatively low d values ranging from 90‰ to 115‰,also indicating the involvement of fluids from the wall *** average bulk contents of volatiles released from magnetite of the Hongge,Baima,and Panzhihua intrusions are 4891,2996,and 1568 mm 3 STP/g,respectively,much higher than those released from other minerals in total,which are 382

Eocene intermediate to felsic subvolcanic rocks of the Torud-Ahmad Abad magmatic belt(TAMB),in the northern part of the Central Iran zone,are exposed between the Torud and Ahmad Abad regions in South-Southeast *** igneous rocks include hypabyssal dacite,trachyte,andesite,trachy-andesite,and basaltic andesite;they are mainly composed of phenocrysts and microcrystalline groundmass of pyroxene,amphibole,and plagioclase,with minor biotite and titanomagnetite;they form domal structures(plugs and stocks),dikes,and sills that intruded into Neoproterozoic to cogenetic Eocene volcano-sedimentary *** on isotopic analysis of these intermediate to acidic rocks,initial ratios of^(143)Nd/^(144)Nd range from 0.512775 to 0.512893 and initial ratios of^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr range from 0.703746 to 0.705314,with quite positiveε_(Nd(i))values of+3.69 to+*** are enriched in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements and depleted in heavy rare earth elements and high-field strength elements,the SiO_(2) content is(52-62)wt.%,and Na_(2)O content>3 wt.%,Al_(2)O_(3) content>16 wt.%,Ybd Yd Sr and Nd isotopic data are consistent with adakitic signatures originating by partial melting of the subducted Neo-Tethys oceanic slab(Sabzevar branch)and lithospheric suprasubduction zone *** mantle signatures typifying the rapidly emplaced adakitic rocks(slab(high-silica adakite)and suprasubduction zone(low-silica adakite)melts)together with their locally voluminous extent are evidences that support a locally extensional geodynamic setting;and the evidence is consistent with an evolution to local transpression in the Late Eocene in this convergent margin are environment to rifting(basalts to adakites)towards submarine conditions in the Neogene.

A NEW BOUNdARY CONdITION FOR RATE-TYPE NON-NEWTONIAN dIFFUSIVE MOdELS ANd THE STABLE MAC SCHEME

We present a new dirichlet boundary condition for the rate-type non-Newtonian diffusive constitutive models. The newly proposed boundary condition is compared with two such well-known and popularly used boundary conditions as the pure Neumann condition and the dirichlet condition by Sureshkumar and Beris. Our condition is demonstrated to be more stable and robust in a number of numerical test cases. A new dirichlet boundary condition is implemented in the framework of the finite difference Marker and Cell （MAC） method. In this paper, we also present an energy-stable finite difference MAC scheme that preserves the positivity for the conformation tensor and show how the addition of the diffusion helps the energy-stability in a finite difference MAC scheme-setting.

Climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub (Ulex europaeus): a global scale comparison in native and introduced regions

Aims Invasive species,which recently expanded,may help understand how climatic niche can shift at the time scale of the current global ***,we address the climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub(common gorse,Ulex europaeus)at the world and regional scales to assess how it could contribute to increasing *** Based on a 28187 occurrences database,we used a combination of 9 species distribution models(SdM)to assess regional climatic niche from both the native range(Western Europe)and the introduced range in different parts of the world(North-West America,South America,North Europe,Australia and New Zealand).Important Findings despite being restricted to annual mean temperature between 4℃ and 22℃,as well as annual precipitation higher than 300 mm/year,the range of bioclimatic conditions suitable for gorse was very *** on a native versus introduced SdM comparison,we highlighted a niche expansion in North-West America,South America and to a lesser degree in Australia,while a niche displacement was assessed in North *** niche changes induced an increase in potential occupied areas by gorse by 49,111,202 and 283%in Australia,North Europe,North-West America and South America,*** the contrary,we found no evidence of niche change in New Zealand,which presents similar climatic condition to the native environment(Western Europe).This study highlights how niche expansion and displacement of gorse might increase invasibility at regional *** change in gorse niche toward new climatic conditions may result from adaptive plasticity or genetic evolution and may explain why it has such a high level of *** into account the possibility of a niche shift is crucial to improve invasive plants management and control.
