Since 2015, community forests have been promoted in Togo as an alternative to protect areas from degradation and as a means of contributing to forest landscape restoration. The study focuses on the Nakpadjouak Community Forest (NCF) in Tami (Togo, West Africa) which contributes to community forests sustainable management. It aims in (i) mapping forest ecosystems and analysing their dynamic and (ii) characterizing the floristic diversity of the NCF. The ecosystems were mapped and their dynamic was evaluated based on Google Earth images of 2014 and 2020. Floristic and forestry inventories were carried out using the transect technique in a sample of 20 plots of 50 m × 20 m. The NCF was made up mainly by wooded/shrub savannahs (95.37%) and croplands/fallow (4.63%) in 2014. These two land use types undergone changes over the 6 years prior to 2020. By 2020, the NCF had 3 land use types: wooded/shrub savannahs (77.59%), open forest/wooded savannahs (22.23%), and croplands/fallows (0.18%). A total of 89 plant species belonging to 70 genera and 28 families were recorded within the NCF. The dominant species are: Heteropogon contortus (L.) P.Beauv. and Combretum collinum Fresen. followed by Pteleopsissuberosa Engl. & Diels, Annona senegalensis Pers. The most common species are: Lannea acida A.rich. s.l., A. senegalensis, Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertner subsp. paradoxa, C. collinum and Acacia dudgeonii Craib ex Holland. Due to its small area of just 40 hectares and its diverse plant life, this community forest of Savannahs Region is a significant biodiversity hotspot and warrants conservation efforts.

In recent years,a great deal of attention has been focused on the environmental impact of plastics,includ-ing the carbon emissions related to plastics,which has promoted the application of biodegradable plas-tics.Countries worldwide have shown high interest in replacing traditional plastics with biodegradable plastics.However,no systematic comparison has been conducted on the carbon emissions of biodegrad-able versus traditional plastic products.This study evaluates the carbon emissions of traditional and biodegradable plastic products(BPPs)over four stages and briefly discusses environmental and economic perspectives.Four scenarios-namely,the traditional method,chemical recycling,industrial composting,and anaerobic digestion-are considered for the disposal of waste BPPs(WBPPs).The analysis takes China as a case study.The results show that the carbon emissions of 1000traditional plastic products(plastic bags,lunch boxes,cups,etc.)were52.09-150.36 carbon emissions equivalent of per kilogram(kg CO_(2)eq),with the stage of plastic production contributing 50.71%-50.77%.In comparison,1000 similar BPPs topped out at 21.06-56.86 kg CO_(2)eq,approximately 13.53%-62.19%lower than traditional plastic prod-ucts.The difference was mainly at the stages of plastic production and waste disposal,and the BPPs showed significant carbon reduction potential at the raw material acquisition stage.Waste disposal plays an important role in environmental impact,and composting and anaerobic digestion are considered to be preferable disposal methods for WBPPs.However,the high cost of biodegradable plastics is a challenge for their widespread use.This study has important reference significance for the sustainable development of the biodegradableplastics industry.

A major feature of humans is that they can attain much higher population densities than any non-domestic animal species of similar body size(Damuth 1987).This is most likely due to the invention of agriculture(Herrera and Garcia-Bertrand 2018),which allowed humans to manage ecosystems in such a way that as much biomass as possible is converted into food(Vitousek et al.1986).

The roots of the plant Cynanchum otophyllum C. K. Schneid(Apocynaceae), known as Qingyangshen in Chinese, are used for a long time as a traditional medicine by different ethnic communities in the Yunnan province(China). The multiple properties and applications of this herbal medicine have been analyzed. C. otophyllum is a perennial herbal liana, nonedible, and generally wild harvested. A cultivation method has been proposed to increase the fruit set level. Qingyangshen is used essentially to treat epilepsy, rheumatism, or other inflammatory diseases. The plant can be found also in diverse polyherbal preparations used in cosmetic or as food supplement(detox products), and in phyto-preparations claimed to reduce hair loss. The plant is a rich reservoir of C-21 steroidal glycosides. Many bioactive compounds have been isolated from this plant and some of them have been pharmacologically characterized, such as otophyllosides, cynotophyllosides, cynanotins, cynotogenins, cynanchins, all briefly evocated here. The plant presents also interesting features in other domains. In particular, leave extracts of C. otophyllum C. K. Schneid contain proteases which are exploited for the local preparation of a cheese-like milk cake. Qingyangshen herbal preparation can be useful to treat epilepsy and inflammation. It has applications beyond medicine in the cosmetic and food industry.

Sliding friction-induced subsurface structures and severe surface oxidation can be the major causes influencing the wear resistance of ductile metallic materials.Here,we demonstrated the role of subsurface and surface structures in enhancing the wear resistance of an equiatomic metastable CoCrNiCu high-entropy alloy(HEA).The CoCrNiCu HEA is composed of a CoCrNi-rich face-centered cubic(FCC)dendrite phase and a Cu-rich FCC inter-dendrite phase.Copious Cu-rich nano-precipitates are formed and distributed uniformly inside the dendrites after tuning the distribution and composition of the two phases by thermal annealing.Although the formation of nano-precipitates decreases the hardness of the alloy due to the loss of solid solution strengthening,these nano-precipitates can be deformed to form continuous Cu-rich nanolayers during dry sliding,leading to a self-organized nano-laminated microstructure and extensive hardening in the subsurface.In addition,the nano-precipitates can facilitate the formation of continuous and compacted glaze layers on the worn surface,which are also beneficial for the reduction of the wear rate of CoCrNiCu.The current work can be extended to other alloy systems and might provide guidelines for designing and fabricating wear-resistant alloys in general.

The resistance of wear protective coatings against oxidation is crucial for their use at high temperatures.Here,three nanocomposite AlCr(Si)N coatings with a fixed Al/Cr atomic ratio of 70/30 and a varying Si-content of 0 at.%,2.5 at.% and 5 at.% were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry,thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray in order to understand the oxidation behavior depending on their Si-content.Additionally,a partially oxidized AlCrSiN coating with 5 at.%Si on a sapphire substrate was studied across the coating thickness by depth-resolved cross-sectional X-ray nanodiffraction and scanning trans-mission electron microscopy to investigate the elemental composition,morphology,phases and residual stress evolution of the oxide scale and the non-oxidized coating underneath.The results reveal enhanced oxidation properties of the AlCr(Si)N coatings with increasing Si-content,as demonstrated by a retarded onset of oxidation to higher temperatures from 1100℃ for AlCrN to 1260℃ for the Si-containing coatings and a simultaneous deceleration of the oxidation process.After annealing of the AlCrSiN sample with5 at.%Si at an extraordinary high temperature of 1400℃ for 60 min in ambient air,three zones developed throughout the coating strongly differing in their composition and structure:(i)a dense oxide layer comprising an Al-rich and a Cr-rich zone formed at the very top,followed by(ii)a fine-grained transition zone with incomplete oxidation and(iii)a non-oxidized zone with a porous structure.The varying elemental composition of these zones is furthermore accompanied by micro-structural variations and a complex residual stress development revealed by cross-sectional X-ray nanodiffraction.The results provide a deeper understanding of the oxidation behavior of AlCr(Si)N coatings depending on their Si-content and the associated elemental,microstructural and residual stress evolution during high-temperature oxidation.

Background: Eurasian Sparrowhawks(Accipiter nisus) increasingly represent successful city-dwellers. Thereby, a rich food supply indicated by high numbers of small birds is believed to be the key driver for this bird-eating raptor species to settle in urban environments. However, as small passerine birds show particularly strong antipredator responses, sparrowhawks may not simply focus on patches of highest prey densities, but rather respond strategically to prey behavior, raising the importance of other parameters in determining the occurrence within urban landscapes.Methods: To deepen our knowledge on habitat requirements of urban sparrowhawks, bird surveys were carried out during winter between December 2005 and January 2017 in 36 city parks in Vienna, Austria. Besides food supply also park size, canopy heterogeneity and the connectivity with other green spaces were considered.Results: Occurrence of sparrowhawks was positively affected by increasing park size, prey density and the interaction between both. Bird feeder density and park connectivity with other green spaces were of minor importance in explaining the presence of this species. Canopy heterogeneity didn't affect city park occupancy by Eurasian Sparrowhawks.Conclusions: Our results suggest that large city parks, particularly when characterized by high prey densities, substantially contribute to protect and preserve ecologically important bird species such as raptors within the urban environment—a landscape already struggling with biodiversity losses and functional homogenization.

Parkinson's disease(PD)is characterized by motor deficits and a wide variety of non-motor symptoms.The age of onset,rate of disease progression and the precise profile of motor and non-motor symptoms display considerable individual variation.Neuropathologically,the loss of substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons is a key feature of PD.The vast majority of PD patients exhibit alpha-synuclein aggregates in several brain regions,but there is also great variability in the neuropathology between individuals.While the dopamine replacement therapies can reduce motor symptoms,current therapies do not modify the disease progression.Numerous clinical trials using a wide variety of approaches have failed to achieve disease modification.It has been suggested that the heterogeneity of PD is a major contributing factor to the failure of disease modification trials,and that it is unlikely that a single treatment will be effective in all patients.Precision medicine,using drugs designed to target the pathophysiology in a manner that is specific to each individual with PD,has been suggested as a way forward.PD patients can be stratified according to whether they carry one of the risk variants associated with elevated PD risk.In this review we assess current clinical trials targeting two enzymes,leucine-rich repeat kinase 2(LRRK2)and glucocerebrosidase(GBA),which are encoded by two most common PD risk genes.Because the details of the pathogenic processes coupled to the different LRRK2 and GBA risk variants are not fully understood,we ask if these precision medicinebased intervention strategies will prove"precise"or"personalized"enough to modify the disease process in PD patients.We also consider at what phases of the disease that such strategies might be effective,in light of the genes being primarily associated with the risk of developing disease in the first place,and less clearly linked to the rate of disease progression.Finally,we critically evaluate the notion that therapies targeting LRRK2 and GBA might be relevant to a wider s
